Impact of Products and Services Innovations on Consumer Behavior: The Portuguese Fitness Industry
The fitness industry is one of the reference services for increasing the adherence of society to physical activity. The high demands, the professionalization of the sector, and the pandemic outbreak have generated the need to adapt to new contexts. Thus, innovation plays a crucial role in the current context of the fitness industry. Portugal is one of the promising markets in the Ibero-American sports. With more than 1,100 fitness clubs serving 688,210 members (with a decrease of 30% after COVID-19), fitness service providers are required to seek new strategies to positively impact consumer behaviors. Specifically, three main lines of innovation are leading the change in Portugal: different business models; new price segments; high technology. All these elements potentially have a positive effect on consumer behavior. The case of GO Fit company is exhibited for illustrating the good practices performed by this fitness operator, which is an excellent example in the Ibero-American fitness industry.Sin financiaciónSPI 2022UE
Critical Reflections on the COVID-19 Pandemic from the NHS Frontline
The COVID-19 pandemic fundamentally changed the way we live, work, and interact with each other. Nowhere was the pandemic more profoundly experienced than on the frontline of healthcare. From overwhelmed Intensive Care Units to shortages of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and clap for carers, the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) became the focal point for the pandemic response. Utilising data from online survey responses (N = 16) complemented by four online interviews and one face-to-face interview (N = 5) with NHS workers primarily during the height of the pandemic, this article offers a preliminary analysis on the challenges the UK’s healthcare workers faced through working in conditions of crisis management. The article particularly addresses NHS workers’ amplification of fear, anxiety, and exhaustion; the absence of widespread solidarity; and implications of the absence of coherent governmental messaging upon the workforce. We situate this discussion within a critical account of neoliberal political economy, the theoretical framework of social harm, and the absence to explicate the harmful conditions of the pandemic’s frontline. While the data are confined to the UK’s NHS workers, its findings are relevant to other countries across the world that enacted similar responses to deal with COVID-19.Sin financiación1.6 Q3 JCR 20220.509 Q2 SJR 2022No data IDR 2022UE
The Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) in Periodontology with Simulated Patient: The Most Realistic Approach to Clinical Practice in Dentistry
The objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) is becoming an increasingly established assessment test in dental schools. The use of simulated patients in the OSCE makes the stations more similar to clinical practice. Therefore, the student can show their technical and clinical knowledge, and certainly, their ability to manage the patient. These sorts of tests, in which simulated patients can be included, would be used before the student started clinical practice with patients and/or at the end of the degree. The objective of this work was to describe how the periodontology station was developed using a simulated patient for students of a fifth year dentistry degree taking an OSCE test. Furthermore, a questionnaire was created to learn the perception of the students about this station and its characteristics. The fifth year students at the European University of Madrid positively evaluated this station in their examination. In addition, it was recorded that they preferred a simulated patient in their tests, rather than stations with clinical cases, images, X-rays, and presentations. It is essential that once the OSCE has been completed, the student receives a feedback to learn where they have failed and, therefore, be able to improve any of the aspects evaluated in the station.Sin financiaciónNo data JCR 20220.828 Q2 SJR 2022No data IDR 2022UE
(Ph3P)AuCl-catalyzed homocoupling of arylboronic acids under benchtop conditions: Synthesis of biphenyls
(Ph3P)AuCl was discovered to be a powerful catalyst in the homocoupling of arylboronic acids and potassium aryltrifluoroborates for the synthesis of symmetrical biaryls. The reactions take place under benchtop reaction conditions in 96% EtOH at temperatures between rt and 50 °C with no exclusion of air or humidity, in the presence of F-TEDA (Selectfluor™) as an oxidant. The procedure is very functional group tolerant, and affords the corresponding biaryls in high yields with large substrate scope (26 examples).Ministry of Science and Education, Spain (PID2021–124419NB-I00)4.6 Q2 JCR 20220.761 Q2 SJR 2022No data IDR 2021UE
Identification of anthropogenic impact on natural habitats by antimicrobial resistance quantification in two neotropical wild cats and their geospatial analysis
Human activities such as habitat degradation and fragmentation threaten biodiversity in Neotropical areas. This work proposes an analytical methodology to identify natural areas in Central America with anthropogenic impact, analyzing the presence of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) in accordance with their theoretical relationship with human-related activities. Sixteen ARGs were quantified in feces of different individuals of 13 jaguars (Panthera onca) and 13 pumas (Puma concolor) in three conservation areas in Costa Rica by real-time PCR. At least one ARG was detected in all samples. Of the ARGs encoding tetracycline resistance, the most frequent were tetQ and tetY (85% and 69%, respectively). The sulfonamides (sulI and sulII; 69% each), phenicols (catI and catII; 19% and 54%, respectively), and quinolones (qnrS; 12%) were also detected. The presence of human settlements, livestock farms (pigs, cattle, and poultry), roads, human health centers, flood zones, and rivers were identified within each area to generate an index of human activity. We found no difference between the presence of ARG by roads, agricultural activities, and human settlements (P>0.05). However, tetW showed higher percentages with porcine and bovine farms; both tetY and tetW were more frequent in jaguars than in pumas. Of concern is that many of the most contaminated samples were taken from national parks, such as Braulio Carrillo and Tortuguero, where animals should not have direct contact with humans.Posgrado Regional en Ciencias Veterinarias Tropicales (PCVET), Universidad Nacional4.8 Q3 JCR 20221.734 Q1 SJR 2022No data IDR 2022UE
Case study of strategies for the conversion of Intermediate Cities from a tourist product to an Urban and Cultural Attractor
The urban interventions carried out in Intermediate Cities (Vargas, 2018) aimed at recovering the historical heritage and obtaining international recognition such as the Unesco World Heritage (EFE, 2020) or Cittaslow (2018) for its exploitation as places with tourist potential for its subsequent use as a driver of unstructured local economies can lead to the creation of "brand strategies as a differentiating element where marketing and profitability weigh more than the principles of conservation, protection, study, dissemination and development of heritage wealth both artistic and architectural” (De Souza, 2021, p. 735). Thus, there are "behaviors on the part of public administrations as modifiers of the functions of the urban space under the criteria of the market, developing gentrification processes" (Moros, 2017, p. 113) of the urban centers of tourist destinations.Sin financiaciónNo data 2022UE
Where is the risk? Inter-reality comparison study of multiple-perpetrator rape assailants in Spain
This research paper aims to shed a critical light on the moral panic surrounding multiple-perpetrator rape (MPR) in Spain, by exploring the interplay between official statistics of this type of crime, and the depiction in the media. The concordance between media representation and the statistical reality of crime raises questions: (1) how multiple perpetrator assault and its assailants are represented in media narratives (content analysis) is examined, including the content, framing, and underlying themes within the media coverage, with a particular emphasis on the role of nationality, and (2) this representation is compared to official crime statistics (Ministry of Home Affairs report on crimes against sexual freedom and indemnity in Spain (detentions/accused) and the statistics of the sentences passed by various Spanish Provincial Courts between 2005 and 2020 from criminal justice data), and to what extent, they align. If they do not align, do news portrayals influence a moral panic? In conclusion, the idea of tabloid justice (Fox et al., 2001) is not present in the three largest Spanish daily newspapers from 2005 to 2021. There is a misrepresentation of non-Spanish nationalities having the highest rates, Romanians being underrepresented and the French being overrepresented. Media coverage perceives tourists as a certain danger, and is questioning the idea of certain non-Spanish immigrants as ‘folk devils.’University of Leicester (UK) I+D+I BEST (CIBEST/2021/51) de la GVA1.7 Q2 JCR 20220.434 Q1 SJR 2022No data IDR 2022UE
Physical Demands in the Worst-Case Scenarios of Elite Futsal Referees Using a Local Positioning System
The aim of this study is to analyze the worst-case scenarios of professional futsal referees during the first and second half of official matches in the Spanish Futsal Cup using a Local Positioning System (LPS) for monitoring their movement patterns. Eight professional futsal referees (40 ± 3.43 years; 1.80 ± 0.03 m; 72.84 ± 4.01 kg) participated in the study. The external load (total distance, high-speed running distance and efforts, sprint distance and efforts, and accelerations and decelerations distances) of the referees was monitored and collected using an LPS. The results revealed significant differences in the worst-case scenarios of the futsal referees during the match according to the time window analyzed (p 0.05). These results will serve to prepare the referees in the best conditions for the competition and adapt the training plans to the worst-case scenarios.Sin financiación3.9 Q2 JCR 20220.764 Q1 SJR 2022No data IDR 2022UE
Online Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Two College Students With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a prevalent disorder among college students. Although there is growing literature supporting the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for this population, no previous study has investigated the feasibility of it being delivered online. In addition, recent evidence suggests that online therapy could be possible for other diagnoses such as depression, anxiety, or health-related disorders. Therefore, research in this area could be critical, as online settings could also improve accessibility to evidence-based interventions for college students with ADHD. This study describes the implementation of CBT for ADHD intervention delivered online for two college students with this diagnosis. We found improvements in both self-reported and clinician-assessed outcomes, in measuring ADHD-related behaviors, executive functioning, emotional comorbidities, and quality of life. These changes were more evident in the case that was more severe at pre-treatment, and were maintained at a 6-month follow-up; even further improvements in self-reported quality of life were observed. These findings support the potential feasibility and clinical utility of online CBT in this population.Sin financiación1.0 Q4 JCR 20220.251 Q3 SJR 2022No data IDR 2022UE
Plasma sodium concentration in older patients as an indicator of severity in emergencies: Results from the Emergency Department and Elder Needs-16 study
Objectives: To study baseline factors associated with hypo- and hypernatremia in older patients attended in emergency departments (EDs) and explore the association between these dysnatremias and indicators of severity in an emergency. Material and methods: We included patients attended in 52 Spanish hospital EDs aged 65 years or older during a designated week. All included patients had to have a plasma sodium concentration on record. Patients were distributed in 3 groups according to sodium levels: normal, 135-145 mmol/L; hyponatremia, 135 mmol/L; or hypernatremia > 145 mmol/L. We analyzed associations between sodium concentration and 24 variables (sociodemographic information, measures of comorbidity and baseline functional status, and ongoing treatment for hypo- or hypernatremia). Indicators of the severity in emergencies were need for hospitalization, in-hospital mortality, prolonged ED stay (> 12 hours) in discharged patients, and prolonged hospital stay (> 7 days) in admitted patients. We used restricted cubic spline curves to analyze the associations between sodium concentration and severity indicators, using 140 mmol/L as the reference. Results: A total of 13 368 patients were included. Hyponatremia was diagnosed in 13.5% and hypernatremia in 2.9%. Hyponatremia was associated with age ($ 80 years), hypertension, diabetes mellitus, an active neoplasm, chronic liver disease, dementia, chemotherapy, and needing help to walk. Hypernatremia was associated with needing help to walk and dementia. The percentages of cases with severity indicators were as follows: hospital admission, 40.8%; in-hospital mortality, 4.3%; prolonged ED stay, 15.9%; and prolonged hospital stay, 49.8%. Odds ratios revealed associations between lower sodium concentration cut points in patients with hyponatremia and increasing need for hospitalization (130 mmol/L, 2.24 [IC 95%, 2.00-2.52]; 120 mmol/L, 4.13 [3.08-5.56]; and 110 mmol/L, 7.61 [4.53-12.8]); risk for in-hospital death (130 mmol/L, 3.07 [2.40-3.92]; 120 mmol/L, 6.34 [4.22- 9.53]; and 110 mmol/L, 13.1 [6.53-26.3]); and risk for prolonged ED stay (130 mmol/L, 1.59 [1.30-1.95]; 120 mmol/L, 2.77 [1.69-4.56]; and 110 mmol/L, 4.83 [2.03-11.5]). Higher sodium levels in patients with hypernatremia were associated with increasing need for hospitalization (150 mmol/L, 1.94 [1.61-2.34]; 160 mmol/L, 4.45 [2.88-6.87]; 170 mmol/L, 10.2 [5.1-20.3]; and 180 mmol/L, 23.3 [9.03-60.3]); risk for in-hospital death (150 mmol/L, 2.77 [2.16-3.55]; 160 mmol/L, 6.33 [4.11-9.75]; 170 mmol/L, 14.5 [7.45-28.1]; and 180 mmol/L, 33.1 [13.3-82.3]); and risk for prolonged ED stay (150 mmol/L, 2.03 [1.48-2.79]; 160 mmol/L, 4.23 [2.03-8.84]; 170 mmol/L, 8.83 [2.74-28.4]; and 180 mmol/L, 18.4 [3.69-91.7]). We found no association between either type of dysnatremia and prolonged hospital stay. Conclusion: Measurement of sodium plasma concentration in older patients in the ED can identify hypo- and hypernatremia, which are associated with higher risk for hospitalization, death, and prolonged ED stays regardless of the condition that gave rise to the dysnatremia.Sin financiación5.5 Q1 JCR 20220.571 Q2 SJR 2022No data IDR 2022UE
