    Quality distortions in monopolistic competition

    No full text
Publisher Copyright: © 2025 The AuthorsIn this paper, we explore how heterogeneous firms decide on complementary and substitutable qualities of their products. We show that if increasing the product qualities appears to be relatively costly, more productive firms choose higher complementary quality but lower substitutable quality. We also document distortions that arise in our framework. Specifically, we find that in the market equilibrium, firms tend to underinvest in substitutable quality but overinvest in complementary quality compared to the first best allocation. Using data from pizzerias in Oslo, Norway, we provide a calibration exercise to estimate welfare losses due to the quality distortions.Peer reviewe

Automatic Classification of Strain in the Singing Voice using Machine Learning

    No full text
Objectives: Classifying strain in the singing voice can help protect professional singers from vocal overuse and support singing training. This study investigates whether machine learning can automatically classify singing voices into two levels of perceived strain. The singing samples represent two genres: classical and contemporary commercial music (CCM). Methods: A total of 324 singing voice samples from 15 professional normophonic singers (nine female, six male) were analyzed. Nine singers were classical, and six were CCM singers. The samples consisted of syllable strings produced at three to six pitches and three loudness levels. Based on expert auditory-perceptual ratings, the samples were categorized into two strain levels: normal-mild and moderate-severe. Three acoustic feature sets (mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs), the extended Geneva Minimalistic Acoustic Parameter Set (eGeMAPS), and wavelet scattering features) were compared using two classifier models [support vector machine (SVM) and multilayer perceptron (MLP)]. Feature selection was performed using recursive feature elimination, and the Mann-Whitney U test was used to assess the discriminative power of the selected features. Results: The highest classification accuracy of 86.1% was achieved using a subset of wavelet scattering features with the MLP classifier. A comparison between individual features showed that the first MFCC coefficient, representing spectral tilt, exhibited the greatest between-class separation. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that machine learning models utilizing selected acoustic features can classify perceptual strain of singing voices automatically with high accuracy. These preliminary findings highlight the potential for larger studies involving more diverse singer groups across different genres.Peer reviewe

Tämä opinnäytetyö tutkii elokuvaäänisuunnittelijan luovaa prosessia hyödyntäen Lauri Järvilehdon (2009) luovan työn mallia, peilaten sitä Edward de Bonon (1970) ja Graham Wallasin (2014) luovuusteorioihin. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on ymmärtää, miten kaksi Aalto-yliopistossa elokuvaäänisuunnittelua opiskellutta henkilöä hahmottaa omaa luovaa prosessiaan ja miten heidän työskentelynsä suhteutuu Järvilehdon malliin. Here is a faithful English translation that maintains the original style and tone: --- This thesis explores the creative process of a film sound designer through the lens of Lauri Järvilehto’s (2009) model of creative work, reflecting it against the creativity theories of Edward de Bono (1970) and Graham Wallas (2014). The aim of the study is to understand how two individuals who have studied film sound design at Aalto University perceive their own creative process and how their ways of working relate to Järvilehto’s model. The participants included one student in the final stages of their studies and another who graduated with a Master of Arts degree in 2024. The study was conducted as qualitative research, with material collected through video interviews in December 2024. The interview questions were based on Järvilehto’s model and were used to examine the participants’ working processes and the factors influencing them. The results revealed that while both interviewees exhibited stages aligned with Järvilehto’s model, their creative processes emphasized different aspects—one leaned on spontaneous association, while the other emphasized emotional resonance. Both also highlighted the importance of community in creative work. The purpose of this thesis was to deepen theoretical understanding of the creative process while also providing practical insights into the work of sound designers. Through the research process and reflective analysis, I have gained a deeper understanding of my own creative process and how it relates to the practices of sound design

From fibers to sugars: Harnessing gaseous hydrogen chloride for cellulose conversion

    No full text
According to the so-called fringed-fibrillar model, the short, disordered regions in cellulose microfibrils are more susceptible to acid hydrolysis, which gives rise to the leveling-off degree of polymerization (LODP). In addition, one severe drawback of acid hydrolysis is the production of humins as an unwanted side reaction to glucose conversion. This dissertation utilizes a new pathway for cellulose degradation, namely using hydrogen chloride (HCl) gas, where the fiber morphology is minimally affected in the entire process. Purification of the products is relatively unproblematic from a gas-solid mixture, and a gaseous catalyst is more straightforward to recycle than the aqueous counterpart. The aim of this thesis was to explore the use of anhydrous HCl gas for producing sugars and nanocellulose from biomass by suppressing humin formation and analyzing the LODP behavior. Here, we investigate how various cellulose polymorphs/materials were hydrolyzed by HCI gas with a water content of 30–50 wt.%. The 50–70% glucose yields were obtained from cellulose I and II polymorphs, while a >90% monosaccharide conversion was acquired from cellulose IIIII after a mild post-hydrolysis. In addition, alcoholysis has raised attention because it can significantly increase biopolymers' solubility and depolymerization rate, inhibit harmful humin formation, and produce valuable platform chemicals. The cotton-based cellulose fibers were firstly soaked in various alcohols (ethanol, 2-propanol, t-butanol, and ethylene glycol) and exposed to anhydrous HCl gas as an acid catalyst, and the impact of these different systems on the leveling-off degree of polymerization (LODP) was explored. Ethylene glycol and t-butanol reached the LODP under the default conditions, i.e., 50 wt.% alcohol and without moisture. Cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) have attracted significant attention due to their extraordinary mechanical and optical properties. In a foundational effort, we investigated the formation of CNF production from agricultural waste, namely from potato fibers, which are side streams with a global production of millions of tons annually. Remarkably, we obtained short CNFs (~500 nm) simultaneously in a one-step HCl(g) hydrolysis process involving alkali treatment, NaClO2 addition, and gaseous HCl hydrolysis. Subsequent film preparation demonstrated that even short CNFs could form strong transparent films. Overall, these findings provide a foundational understanding of the practical implementation of HCl gas hydrolysis with various cellulose polymorphs/materials. The study presents potential pathways for the HCl (g) hydrolysis of biomass and its use in the generation of nanocellulose and platform chemicals from various sources

Soft matter mechanics of immune cell aggregates

Publisher Copyright: © 2025 The Authors.T-cells are a crucial subset of white blood cells that play a central role in the immune system. When T-cells bind antigens, it leads to cell activation and the induction of an immune response. If T-cells are activated by antigens in vivo or artificially in vitro, they form multicellular aggregates. The mechanical properties of such clusters provide valuable information on different T-cell activation pathways. Furthermore, the aggregate mechanics capture how T-cells are affected by mechanical forces and interact within larger conglomerates, such as lymph nodes and tumours. However, an understanding of collective T-cell adhesion and mechanics following cell activation is currently lacking. Probing the mechanics of fragile and microscopically small living samples is experimentally challenging. Here, the micropipette force sensor technique was used to stretch T-cell aggregates and directly measure their Young's modulus and ultimate tensile strength. A mechanistic model was developed to correlate how the stiffness of the mesoscale multicellular aggregate emerges from the mechanical response of the individual microscopic cells within the cluster. We show how the aggregate elasticity is affected by different activators and relate this to different activation pathways in the cells. Our soft matter mechanics study of multicellular T-cell aggregates contributes to our understanding of the biology behind immune cell activation.Peer reviewe

    Causality in Intuitive Physics

    No full text
Humans have an impressive ability to understand physical systems and perceive the interactions that occur within them. This ability is called intuitive physics, and it consists of several intuitive theories about the world. It has been suggested that many cognitive processes operate by combining intuitive theories with causal reasoning. Studying how people understand their physical environment may offer solutions for developing more intelligent AI that can also operate in physical environments. This bachelor9s thesis is a literature review that explores the role of causality in intuitive physics. This thesis focuses in particular on the counterfactual simulation model and the Intuitive Physics Engine. According to the counterfactual simulation model, causation is based on the execution of counterfactual (i.e., alternative) simulations. The Intuitive Physics Engine is a theory suggesting that people simulate physical situations in their minds in a way similar to how physics simulations are run on computers. The conclusion of this thesis is that by combining the counterfactual simulation model with the intuitive physics engine, humans are able to accurately perceive causal relationships in their environment. However, people do not always use this combined model; they also hold incorrect beliefs about physical situations and often rely on imprecise, heuristic methods. Causality is part of human physical reasoning, but it is not the only method people use to understand their surroundings. The human approach to understanding the physical world could be a valuable starting point for developing AI, as intuitive physics may offer a good compromise between accuracy and computational demand. Ihmisen kyvylle ymmärtää ympäristöään on annettu useita selityksiä.

Decreased feature sizes in semiconductor devices have made them susceptible for various nano- and micro-scale defects, such as thermal slip and oxidation induced stacking faults (OISFs). Thermal slip is realized as step-like defects of approximately 10–90 nm in height on the wafer surface, named as surface slip. It can induce critical problems in device fabrication processes, for example, due to alignment issues in lithography, or thermal slip in the bulk can degrade the electrical performance of the device. Similarly, OISFs are critical for the electrical performance of the device. Formation of these aforementioned defects are common adverse effects of the dissolution annealing of crystal originated particles (COPs) from Czochralski grown silicon wafers. COP dissolution annealing is performed to improve the gate oxide integrity of the devices, and to form a denuded zone. COP dissolution annealing is customarily done on a final polished wafer, and the surface quality can be regained with another polishing step. In addition, the surface slip could be expected to be mitigated once the wafer is re-polished, yet it is not reported in the literature. However, performing two separate polishing steps is not cost-effective. In this work, the feasibility of performing COP dissolution annealing on an unpolished wafer was evaluated. The impact of oxygen concentration of the wafer, annealing atmosphere and temperature, as well as the extent of surface grinding damage on annealing-induced defect formation was considered. In addition, it was studied whether surface slip could be mitigated by polishing. The results showed that wafers with a lower oxygen concentration (1–5 ppma, ASTM-83) had undergone more severe plastic deformation than wafers with higher oxygen concentration (12–15 ppma), as the former wafers had longer thermal slip lines and increased warp after the annealing. The annealing atmosphere and temperature did not have a significant effect on the formation of thermal slip, but high density of OISFs were observed when the wafers were annealed in a mixture of argon and oxygen. In addition, wafers that had more abraded surface prior to the annealing showed a lattice strain pattern if annealed in the same atmosphere. If the wafers were annealed in an atmosphere containing only argon, or had less grinding abrasion, no such pattern was observed. The surface slip lines were efficiently mitigated by polishing the wafers after annealing.

    Lahjoituksenomainen digitaalinen mesenointi

To understand consumer motivations behind Charitable Digital Patronage (CDP), this thesis primarily adopts a psychological perspective, focusing on the subjective value CDP creates for the consumer. The analysis is structured around Self-Determination Theory (SDT), which offers a framework for examining which fundamental psychological needs CDP may fulfil. Drawing from existing literature, previously identified motivators for patronage are categorized under the core SDT needs—autonomy, competence, and relatedness—as well as an additional category of beneficence, which captures motivations related to altruism and prosocial intent. The author defines CDP as financial support to a creator through a subscription-based crowdfunding platform where the willingness to pay (WTP) seems to exceed the tangible benefits the patron receives in return. The analysis suggest that CDP fulfils needs through patron community, connection with creator, opportunity to help creator and improve the world, vicarious growth and success, and the pursuit of and alignment with own interests and values.Tämän kandidaatintutkielman tavoitteena on ymmärtää kuluttajien motivaatiota lahjoituksenomaisen digitaalisen mesenoinnin (CDP) taustalla ensisijaisesti psykologisesta näkökulmasta, keskittyen siihen subjektiiviseen arvoon, jonka CDP kuluttajalle tuottaa.

    No full text
As the city of Kouvola undergoes economic and demographic shifts, several municipal buildings have been left unused. At the same time, there is a growing need for housing solutions that address the city’s aging population. Adaptive reuse offers a sustainable response to this situation. This thesis explores how one of Kouvola’s obsolete buildings, Koulurinne School in Kuusankoski, can be repurposed to meet the city’s contemporary needs while preserving its architectural heritage. The thesis is divided into four main sections: Context, Analysis, Design Principles, and Design Concept. The Context section introduces Kouvola’s situation and provides background on relevant topics, such as the aging population, and sustainable construction. It sets the base for developing design solutions that address both Kouvola’s housing needs and sustainability goals. The Analysis section examines the architectural features and heritage of the Koulurinne School building and its surroundings, identifying opportunities for adaptive reuse. It suggests that the building could provide housing that includes generous collective spaces for the aging population of Kuusankoski. The Design Principles section reviews concepts and reference projects related to collective housing and housing for the aging population. It defines main considerations, such as housing typologies and Universal Design principles, that inform the development of the design solutions. The Design Concept section presents a proposal for transforming the Koulurinne School into collective senior housing. It illustrates the adaptive reuse interventions and discusses them in relation to the insights gathered from the previous sectionsKouvolan kaupungin läpikäydessä taloudellisia ja väestönrakenteellisia muutoksia, useita kunnallisia rakennuksia on jäänyt vaille käyttötarkoitusta.
