Parametric amplifiers using Josephson junctions provide high amplification and near-quantum limited levels of added noise at millikelvin temperatures, making them well-suited for measurements of superconducting quantum bits and other highly sensitive systems emitting weak microwave signals. Common figures of merit used to describe the performance of parametric amplifiers are bandwidth, gain level, and reverse isolation of the signal source. This thesis studies the use of subcircuits constructed from passive components in Josephson parametric amplifiers to circumvent or relax trade-offs between these figures of merit.
Two different amplifier device concepts providing improvements to the figures of merit are presented and adapted to integrate experimentally verified amplifier devices. The proposed amplifier concepts are designed from target values for the figures of merit and characterized using a combination of harmonic balance method and linearized simulation techniques. The devices were found to produce consistent amplification of approximately 20 dB with a relative bandwidth of 10% for various characteristic frequencies and integrated reverse isolation equivalent to that provided by external ferrite circulators.
Automated processes were developed to draw the studied amplifier concepts as lithography mask layouts from user-defined amplifier characteristics to speed up circuit design. This was accomplished by applying models for lumped element devices with analytical formulas that could be reverse engineered to calculate device geometries compatible with available fabrication techniques based on target impedance spectra. The applied analytical models were validated prior to this work using experimental and simulation methods.Josephson liitoksiin perustuvat parametrivahvistimet tuottavat voimakkaan signaalivahvistuksen kasvatten kohinatasoja lähes kvanttimekaanisen minimimäärän, minkä johdosta ne soveltuvat hyvin suprajohtavien kvanttibittien sekä muiden herkkien mikroaaltolähteiden mittaamiseen. Parametrivahvistinten suorituskyvyn määrityksessä käytetään usein kriteereinä saavutettua vahvistusta, kaistanleveyttä sekä vahvistettavan signaalinlähteen eristystä käänteissuuntaisten signaalien suhteen. Tässä työssä tutkitaan näihin kriteereihin liittyvien rajoitusten kiertämistä tai löyhentämistä käyttämällä passiivisista komponenteista rakentuvia piirejä Josephson parametrivahvistinten ääreispiireinä.
Työssä esitellään kaksi passiivisia ääreispiirejä suorituskyvyn parantamiseen käyttävää vahvistinlaitetta, joita muokataan soveltamaan kokeellisesti vahvistettuja parametrivahvistimia. Muokatut vahvistinlaitteet suunnittellaan vahvistuskäytökselle asetettuihin tavoitearvojen perusteella, ja niitä karakterisoidaan käyttämällä harmonisen tasapainon menetelmään perustuvia simulaatioita sekä linearisoituja simulaatiomenetelmiä. Ensimmäisen laitteen, heijastusvahvistimen, ennustetaan tuottavan noin 20 dB vahvistuksen 10% suhteellisella kaistanleveydellä useilla ominaistaajuuden arvoilla. Toinen tutkittu laite perustuu kulkuaaltovahvistimeen ja tarjoaa signaalilähteelle piiriin sisäänrakennetun käänteissuuntaisen eristyksen, joka on verrannollinen ulkoisten kiertoelimien tarjoamaan eristykseen.
Tutkituille vahvistinlaitteille suunniteltiin toteutus mikrosirulla, ja suunnittelun nopeuttamiseksi valmisteltiin automatisoidut prosessit, joiden avulla piirin mikrosirutoteutusta vastaava maskipiirros pystytään laatimaan käyttäjän määrittelemien vahvistusominaisuuksien kautta. Näissä prosesseissa sovellettiin mikrosirulla toteutettujen erilliskomponenttien malleja, joihin liittyviä analyyttisiä kaavoja pystyttiin käyttämään laitteen geometrian laskemiseksi käyttäen haluttua impedanssin taajuusriippuvuutta. Sovellettujen analyyttisten mallien oltiin tämän työn ulkopuolella vahvistettu vastaavan kokeellisten mittausten ja simulaatioiden tuloksia
Regulatory Considerations and Challenges for Bioproduct Innovations
As the demand for sustainable alternatives grows, biomaterials are becoming increasingly relevant across industries. However, their adoption is often slowed by regulatory frameworks not yet adapted to their unique characteristics. This thesis explores how EU regulations particularly REACH and the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) affect the development and market entry of biomaterials. Through a literature review and a case study of regenerated cellulose, this research highlights key regulatory challenges, including inconsistent classification, limited support for circular use, and high compliance burdens for smaller companies. The findings suggest that while current regulations are effective at managing chemical safety, they often overlook the specific needs and advantages of biomaterials, particularly in terms of end of life performance and sustainability. The thesis concludes by proposing improvements to regulatory processes, aiming to better align safety requirements with environmental goals and support innovation in the growing bioeconomy
HOW IS THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY PERFORMING? INSIGHTS FROM FOUR YEARS OF MEASUREMENT
Publisher Copyright: © 2025, International Group for Lean Construction. All rights reserved. The purpose of this paper is to report the results from the second, third, and fourth year of measurement of performance metrics set by Building 2030 consortium. The first year of measurement was reported in the International Group of Lean Construction Conference 2022. The broader question the authors are seeking an answer is: Lean construction practices have been trained, tested, and implemented for many years in the Finnish construction industry but has the industry improved performance?” During the measurement period the number of projects included in measurement has increased. All metrics related to reliability have increased during the measurement period; considering the unexceptional environment with the pandemic and an overheated construction market, the authors were expecting a decline in these metrics. There has been an emphasis on decreasing project duration through implementation of takt production. It was interesting to notice that this has not yet been reflected on average durations, likely because the average project size has increased. Also, all sustainability metrics have improved. In conclusion, the industry seems to be improving performance but longer time intervals of robust data will be needed to identify a trend. The Building 2030 consortium intends to continue to annually collect the performance metrics.Peer reviewe
Translating Cultural Heritage Sites into Virtual Reality: Challenges in the Design Process
Over the recent decades, advancements in technology have transformed how people can experience cultural heritage by offering immersive digital in-teractions beyond traditional on-site visits. Virtual reality has become a powerful tool for interpreting and sharing cultural heritage and knowledge as a result of this technological advancement. The growing importance of cultural heritage has prompted more research and government initiatives in adopting emerging technologies in its protection. Current studies have demonstrated the medium potential for translation. The present study shifts the focus to the challenges involved in the intermedial translations of historical materials into virtual reality. This study focuses on the concept design phase and decision-making process of designers when transforming cultural heritage sites into virtual environments.
The literature review outlines important concepts from the academic dis-course of cultural mediation, virtual reality, and translation design. This thesis adopted a qualitative research method using semi-structured inter-views. These interviews were conducted with seven experts involved in the design process for virtual heritage projects centred around cultural herit-age sites. Firstly, interviewees were asked about their project experience, collaboration with stakeholders, and translation design practices. Seven interviewees revealed their design decisions involved in translating cultur-al contents into virtual reality, the challenges they encountered, and the solutions they implemented.
The present study identifies six key challenges during the process of trans-lating cultural heritage sites into virtual reality. These challenges arise from the unique characteristics of each heritage site, the availability and quality of historical data, as well as considerations related to cultural au-thenticity and informed decision-making. Additional challenges include the reconstruction of the site into 3D, the interpretation and representation of intangible elements, together with the effective management of team col-laboration and stakeholder involvement, which are essential for ensuring authentic translations. These challenges have major consequences for three main stakeholder groups: designers, cultural stakeholders, and research-ers
Algebraic degree of optimization over a variety with an application to P-norm distance degree
Publisher Copyright: © The Author(s) 2025.We study an optimization problem with the feasible set being a real algebraic variety X and whose parametric objective function fu is gradient-solvable with respect to the parametric data u. This class of problems includes Euclidean distance and maximum likelihood optimization. For these particular optimization problems, a prominent role is played by the ED and ML correspondence, respectively. We associate an optimization correspondence with our generalized optimization problem and show that it is equidimensional. This leads to the notion of algebraic degree of optimization on X. We apply these results to p-norm optimization and define the p-norm distance degree of X, which coincides with the ED degree of X for p=2. Finally, we derive a formula for the p-norm distance degree of X as a weighted sum of the polar classes of X under suitable transversality conditions.Peer reviewe
Corrosion in Electrical Environments
Corrosion in electrical operating environments represents one of the most pervasive and costly challenges in modern industrial systems. This electrochemical phenomenon causes insidious malfunctions in a wide range of electrical devices. These corrosion-related malfunctions lead to substantial financial losses and reliability issues. Environmental factors, such as airborne pollutants, temperature and high humidity, accelerate the corrosion reaction.
This bachelor’s thesis investigates environmental corrosion rates, corrosive factors and their impact on electrical devices. The bachelor’s thesis is based on Convic corrosion research, a collaborative research conducted by the KOTEL association since 2022. The research included ten operating environments, selected by project members Danfoss Drives, Vaisala and Nokia. The research objective was to improve the product quality, reliability and competitiveness by identifying the corrosive impact of operating environments.
The research was conducted using standardized corrosion test cubes. These cubes contained two copper and silver coupons with relative humidity and temperature sensors. The research revealed that the most corrosive environments were wastewater treatment plants, open shoreside assembly, a motorway site and an industrial area. Corrosion rates were highest in wastewater treatment plants, where corrosion was on average 271 Å/day for copper and 133 Å/day for silver. The lowest corrosion rates were in process-separated and climate-controlled electrical rooms in which the corrosion rate was as low as 3.2 Å/day for copper and 4.6 Å/day for silver.
The study revealed that substantial environmental stress was caused by airborne corrosive substances. The study showed that high humidity alone did not cause remarkable corrosion but mainly accelerated the effect of airborne impurities. The bachelor’s thesis clarified corrosion-related standardization and analysed quantitative corrosion measurements, based on which manufacturers can evaluate the corrosion stress during the lifecycle of an electrical device.
haaste, etenkin Etelä-Aasian maissa, joissa suurin osa maailman laivoista romute-
taan.
Tämän kandidaatintyön tavoitteena on tarkastella laivanpurkuteollisuutta eetti-
sestä näkökulmasta ja tunnistaa tapoja, joilla työntekijöiden oloja voidaan paran-
taa. Työ esittelee rantaromutuksen, laituriromutuksen, ramppiromutuksen ja kui-
vatelakoinnin erot sekä arvioi niiden vaikutuksia työturvallisuuteen. Lisäksi selvi-
tetään, miten kansainvälinen lainsäädäntö, kuten Baselin yleissopimus, Hongkon-
gin yleissopimus ja EU:n aluskierrätysasetus, vaikuttavat käytännön tasolla purku-
telakoiden toimintaan.
Li-
säksi käsitellään Design for Recycling -ajattelua ratkaisuna, jonka avulla turvalli-
suutta voitaisiin parantaa jo laivan suunnitteluvaiheessa
FROM THEORY TO PRACTICE : APPLYING TIME SPAN OF DISCRETION IN LAST PLANNER SYSTEM® AND TAKT PRODUCTION TO NAVIGATE WORK COMPLEXITY
Publisher Copyright: © 2025, International Group for Lean Construction. All rights reserved.Due to the introduction and adoption of new organizational structures and technology, the power dynamics within projects in the construction industry have shifted. This may lead to an increase in dissatisfaction and frustration among workers who are not willing to change because the emphasis is on organizational and technological change. In circumstances of change, the role extends beyond the employee’s inherent comfort and proficiency, frequently resulting in discontent and unease. Prior studies indicate that if the task surpasses its inherent timespan, failure is probable; conversely, if it is shorter, the employee may experience inadequate challenges and dissatisfaction. In recent decades, the implementation of Lean Construction (LC) principles has frequently instigated such changes on construction sites. Although these production systems, such as Last Planner System® (LPS) and Takt Production (TP), are noted to enhance project performance and success, especially via collaborative and workload- balancing strategies, their implementation seldom resolves issues related to task complexity, workforce cognitive capacity, or the distinct timespan for tasks. This conceptual study explores the subject and examines, through Stratified Systems Theory (SST) theory, similarities between LC methods and the timespan of discretion (TSD) concept. Moreover, the research seeks to illustrate the importance of comprehending the potential of integrating TSD ideas with LPS and TP to enhance project outcomes. Furthermore, the study will focus on investigating how tailoring activities to align with workers’ cognitive capacities and inherent timeframes may enhance situational awareness and satisfaction in construction projects.Peer reviewe
Global Navigation Satellite System Vulnerability to Jamming and Spoofing
Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) are ubiquitous in modern society, providing services for positioning, velocity and timing. Billions of GNSS receivers are in use, supporting critical infrastructure such as power grids and financial systems. However, GNSS technologies have weaknesses, posing serious security risks to GNSS services and applications using the services.
This thesis reviews the literature on two core forms of intentional interference in GNSS: jamming and spoofing. The types of attacks, the threat scenarios that are posed for GNSS-dependent applications, documented real-world incidents, and the countermeasures proposed against attacks are covered. This thesis is limited to the user segment of GNSS and the focus is on civilian infrastructure and applications.
The GNSS threat landscape has changed in recent years, driven by the evolution of attacking technology and geopolitical tensions. Case studies from regions such as Northern Europe and the Black Sea demonstrate the persistence and impact of modern attacks. Countermeasures ranging from signal processing and antenna arrays to cryptographic and machine learning offer varying levels of protection against attacks.
The findings of this thesis highlight that attackers using readily available technology have an asymmetric advantage against GNSS. Moreover, GNSS interference has shifted from isolated incidents to a persistent threat. To enhance protection, countermeasures should be deployed in complementary, layered approaches and alternative navigation and timing systems should be considered.
Lisäksi GNSS-häirintä on muuttunut yksittäisistä tapauksista jatkuvaksi uhaksi. Suojan parantamiseksi torjuntatoimia tulisi toteuttaa toisiaan täydentävinä ja kerroksittain, ja vaihtoehtoisia navigointi- ja aikasynkronointijärjestelmiä tulisi harkita
