Are depression, anxiety, and loneliness associated with visual hallucinations in younger adults with Charles Bonnet Syndrome?
BackgroundCharles Bonnet Syndrome (CBS) refers to the presence of visual hallucinations experienced by people, without cognitive, or psychiatric deficits that are related to sight loss. This study surveyed younger adults (18-60 years) with visual impairments, to assess the impact of anxiety, depression, loneliness and the Covid-19 lockdowns on their visual hallucinations.Objectives To examine the association between depression, anxiety, loneliness, and the Covid-19 lockdowns, and visual hallucinations in younger adults with CBS.DesignAn on-line survey was used with an opportunistic sample of people with sight loss.Methods A survey assessed the frequency, duration and valence of visual hallucinations using a 5-point Likert scale, assessed anxiety, depression and loneliness using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and UCLA loneliness scale, respectively.Results29 young adults (21 female), aged 22-59 years with vision loss from a range of causes, who experience visual hallucinations, were included in the survey. The majority (76%) of participants had experienced hallucinations within the past week, with 83% stating they occurred frequently or very frequently. For 59% of participants the hallucinations were of short duration (<2 mins), but 34% experienced them continuously. Hallucinations were regarded as being unpleasant by 34% of participants, while 59% rated them as being neutral. The incidence of depression and anxiety were high in the sample (48% and 65% respectively) and 65% experienced loneliness. Participants with scores indicating anxiety or borderline anxiety had significantly more frequent hallucinations than other participants and a similar trend was found for depression. The Covid-19 lockdowns exacerbated hallucinations in 24% of cases, but for 68% they remained unchanged. ConclusionThe study demonstrated that Charles Bonnet Syndrome is observed in people of all ages, with sight-loss arising from a wide range of underlying causes. Depression, anxiety and loneliness are observed in many cases of CBS. While there was some indication that high anxiety, and to some extent depression, was associated with frequent hallucinations, no other relationships were found between the psychosocial factors (depression, anxiety and loneliness) and the frequency, duration, or valence of their visual hallucinations
Decolonizing Minds and Education:Critical Pedagogy and Epistemic Disobedience in Kurdistan
This article examines the intricacies involved in the process of decolonizing education. It draws on the author's first‐hand teaching experiences and observations as an activist scholar and a critical pedagogue at Bingöl University in Turkey from 2013 to 2016, during a period marked by intense political tension between security forces and Kurdish insurgencies. It elucidates a transformative pedagogical endeavor aimed at decolonizing education, with a particular focus on Kurdish students who endure colonial domination and oppression. Grounded in critical pedagogy, border thinking, and the principles of epistemic disobedience, this intervention represents a deliberate departure from traditional educational paradigms. It endeavors to cultivate a more inclusive and liberatory learning environment by drawing on theoretical frameworks articulated by renowned scholars such as Freire, Fanon, Mignolo, and Illich. At its core, this endeavor seeks to transcend the conventional boundaries of education by fostering critical consciousness, agency, and alternative worldviews among marginalized communities. Through prioritizing interactive dialogue, problem‐posing educational models, and participatory learning practices, the initiative empowers students to critically engage with their social, historical, and cultural contexts. Employing innovative pedagogical strategies like the marketplace of ideas and extracurricular reading groups, students are encouraged to reclaim their own forms of knowledge and challenge hegemonic narratives perpetuated by colonial structures. This initiative underscores the transformative potential of education in dismantling oppressive structures and fostering alternative visions of social change. By amplifying the voices of marginalized communities, the intervention not only challenges the status quo but also lays the groundwork for a more equitable and emancipatory educational landscape
Quantifying the effects of background concentrations of crude oil pollution on polar sea ice and assessing how sea ice and snow affect PAR transmittance at the ice-ocean interface
Sea ice is a highly scattering medium that plays an important role in modulating the radiative budget of the planet through its high value of albedo. Sea ice albedo is sensitive to the presence of light-absorbing impurities such as black carbon; however, the effects of background concentrations of crude oil pollution (≤ 1 ppm) on sea ice albedo have not previously been considered. Therefore, the first component of this thesis is a joint radiative-transfer and modelling study utilising the Tropospheric Ultraviolet and Visible (TUV)-snow radiative-transfer model and the Royal Holloway sea ice simulator (SIS). Modelling shows the presence of different crude oils in sea ice can cause a significant decrease in the value of albedo. Different types of sea ice are sensitive to oil pollution; however, first-year and particularly melting sea ice are most sensitive to oil pollution. To verify the modelling study, weathered Alaska North Slope crude oil is added to lab-grown sea ice and the optical properties of the sea ice are measured with a spectrometer. The TUV-snow model is used to quantify the absorption and scattering cross-section values of the weathered oil in the ice. Fundamentally, the study confirms the optical properties of the weathered crude oil can be measured in a sea ice simulator and the TUV-snow model can be used to quantify the effects of weathered crude oil in lab-grown sea ice. The second component of the thesis examines how sea ice and snow affect photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) transmittance to the ice-ocean interface with the TUV-snow model. The availability of under-ice PAR is critical in driving primary production in the Arctic Ocean, so typical sea ice (0.2–3.5 m) and snow (0.01–1 m) thicknesses are considered for a Winter, Spring, and Summer scenario. Modelled values show a good agreement within one standard deviation with field measurements and a new mathematical technique to predict the value of PAR transmittance at the ice-ocean interface is established. The effect that different sea ice algae chl-a concentrations (0–500 mg chl-a m-2) present in the base of the ice have on PAR transmittance is also parameterised
Pred-Pol-Pov:Visibility, data flows and the predictive policing of poverty
Predictive and data-driven policing systems continue to proliferate around the world enticing police forces with promises of improvements in efficiency and the ability to offer various ways of addressing the future to pre-empt, predict, or prevent crime. As more of these systems become operationalised in England and Wales, this paper takes up Duarte's (2021) observation of a lack of description as to what such systems actually are. It adapts a social network methodology to explore what a data-driven policing system is. Using a police force in England, UK, as a case study, we provide a visualisation of a data-driven policing system based on the data flows it requires to operate. We show how a disparate network of affiliate organisations act as collators of specific data types which are then used in a range of policing applications. The paper makes visible how data travels from its source through various nodes and the different potential points of translation that occur. We uncover how certain groups are made visible to the police due to the data being shared within a network of institutions and organisations, and as others have argued before us, how the data points that make this network visibility possible are often proxies for poverty. This makes certain groups and sections of society highly visible to the digital system whilst other groups become less visible – and potentially even hidden

Atlantoaxial abnormalities are rarely documented among wild animals. Many defects of segmentation in the spine are hereditary in domestic species and humans. Here, we present a block vertebra in an eastern wapiti (Cervus canadensis canadensis) from the Angel Site (12Vg1) in southern Indiana (USA) dating to 1000–1400 CE. Diagnosis used macroscopic and radiographic examination. Evidence of inflammatory response and eburnation point to functional compromise. Recorded pathologies of this nature are underrepresented in the past and present. We suggest this specimen from an adult wapiti species represents a female as this condition would have been more debilitating in an antlered stag limiting the possibility of living well into adulthood
