Solo singers at the Comédie-Italienne (1716-1752)
Research in the twentieth century has certainly defined the key role of competition as between the Italians' theatre and the Fair theatres; yet musical values have been missing from the debate insofar as solo singers are concerned. This chapter suggests that since purely musical attractions were cultivated from the start, a policy of auditioning and hiring good soloists was in place. Because they were also actors and sometimes also dancers, they have (traditionally) been overlooked as solo singers by historians of theatre since the eighteenth century. The first section of the article outlines the most important functions undertaken by solo singers within the theatre's repertory, and the second section examines the careers of the eight solo singers who were most prominent. The particular influence of Italian or semi-Italian music upon performance itself can be shown by documentary evidence in two cases. In the second of these, Charles Rochard de Bouillac may be shown to have sung the role of Uberto (in La serva padrona) in Italian, near the end of his career
The timing of the deglaciation in the Atlantic Iberian mountains:Insights from the stratigraphic analysis of a lake sequence in Serra da Estrela (Portugal)
Understanding the environmental response to the last glacial termination in regions located in transitional climate zones such as the Atlantic Iberian mountains is crucial to estimate potential changes in regions affected by current glacial melting. We present an 8.5 m-long, solid last deglaciation and Holocene chronostratigraphic record including detailed sediment analysis from Lake Peixão, a pro-glacial lake in the Serra da Estrela (Central Portugal). The age–depth model relies on a Bayesian approach that includes 16 AMS 14C dates and 210Pb–137CS measurements, robustly dating the lake formation at 14.7 ± 0.32 cal. ka BP. This chronological reconstruction shows an average sedimentation rate of ca. 0.07 cm yr−1 (15 yr cm−1), enabling proxy analyses at decadal timescales. The sediment sequence is composed of five lithological units: (U1) coarse and unsorted fluvioglacial lacustrine deposits; (U2) massive fluvioglacial lacustrine deposits (863–790 cm below surface [bsf]; 14.7 ± 0.32–13.8 ± 0.12 cal. ka BP); (U3) water current fluvioglacial lacustrine deposits (790–766 cm bsf; 13.8 ± 0.12–12.9 ± 0.29 cal. ka BP); (U4) laminated/banded lacustrine deposits characterized by terrigenous deposits from ice-covered lake periods and episodic events of ice and snow melting (766–752 cm bsf; 12.9 ± 0.29–11.7 ± 0.15 cal. ka BP); and (U5) massive muddy lacustrine deposits (752–0 cm bsf; 11.7 ± 0.15 cal. ka BP–present). The occurrence of U2 to U4 deposits defines the transition from glacial cold (U1) to net warm postglacial conditions (U5). These climate transitions are marked by changes in sediments and the presence of very low sedimentation rate periods, possibly related to the Intra-Allerød Cold Period and the coldest phase of the Younger Dryas. Our results support the previously proposed timing of the retreat of the Serra da Estrela glaciers ca. 13.8 ± 0.12 cal. ka BP. The robust chronology of Lake Peixão highlights the potential of Iberian pro-glacial lakes for dating deglaciation processes and will lead to unprecedented decadal-to-centennial timescale palaeoclimate reconstructions in this region since the last glacial–interglacial transition

Oven:Safe and Live Communication Protocols in Scala, using Synthetic Behavioural Type Analysis
We present Oven: a toolset to assure safety and liveness of communication protocols among threads in concurrent programs in Scala.Oven is the first practical toolset that is built on top of new theoretical foundations of synthetic behavioural type analysis, recently developed by us to improve the expressiveness of existing work. We explain Oven's usage, summarise its design and implementation (main challenge: how to encode the new synthetic behavioural typing rules in Scala's existing type system), and discuss a preliminary evaluation of expressiveness (the results provide first evidence that Oven is an improvement over two state-of-the-art tools)
Intra-exon motif correlations as a proxy measure for mean per-tile sequence quality data in RNA-Seq
Given the wide variability in the quality of NGS data submitted to public repositories, it is essential toidentify methods that can perform quality control on these datasets when additional quality controldata, such as mean tile data, is missing. This is particularly important because such datasets areroutinely deposited in public archives that now store data at an unprecedented scale. In this paper,we show that correlating counts of reads corresponding to pairs of motifs separated over specificdistances on individual exons corresponds to mean tile data in the datasets we analysed, and cantherefore be used when mean tile data is not available.As test datasets we use the H. sapiens IVT (in-vitro transcribed) dataset of Lahens et al., and a D.melanogaster dataset comprising wild and mutant types from Aerts et al.The intra-exon motif correlations as a function of both GC content parameters are much higherin the IVT-Plasmids mRNA selection free RNA-Seq sample (control) than in the other RNA-Seqsamples that did undergo mRNA selection: both ribosomal depletion (IVT-Only) and PolyA selection(IVT-polyA, wild-type, and mutant). There is considerable degradation of similar correlations in themutant samples from the D. melanogaster dataset. This matches with the available mean tile data thathas been gathered for these datasets. We observe that extremely low correlations are indicative of biasof technical origin, such as flowcell error
Refuting the myth of a ‘tsunami’ of mental ill-health in populations affected by COVID-19:Evidence that response to the pandemic is heterogeneous, not homogeneous
Background: The current study argues that population prevalence estimates for mental health disorders, or changes in mean scores over time, may not adequately reflect the heterogeneity in mental health response to the COVID-19 pandemic within the population. Methods: The COVID-19 Psychological Research Consortium (C19PRC) Study is a longitudinal, nationally representative, online survey of UK adults. The current study analysed data from its first three waves of data collection: Wave 1 (March 2020, N = 2025), Wave 2 (April 2020, N = 1406) and Wave 3 (July 2020, N = 1166). Anxiety-depression was measured using the Patient Health Questionnaire Anxiety and Depression Scale (a composite measure of the PHQ-9 and GAD-7) and COVID-19-related posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) with the International Trauma Questionnaire. Changes in mental health outcomes were modelled across the three waves. Latent class growth analysis was used to identify subgroups of individuals with different trajectories of change in anxiety-depression and COVID-19 PTSD. Latent class membership was regressed on baseline characteristics. Results: Overall prevalence of anxiety-depression remained stable, while COVID-19 PTSD reduced between Waves 2 and 3. Heterogeneity in mental health response was found, and hypothesised classes reflecting (i) stability, (ii) improvement and (iii) deterioration in mental health were identified. Psychological factors were most likely to differentiate the improving, deteriorating and high-stable classes from the low-stable mental health trajectories. Conclusions: A low-stable profile characterised by little-to-no psychological distress ('resilient' class) was the most common trajectory for both anxiety-depression and COVID-19 PTSD. Monitoring these trajectories is necessary moving forward, in particular for the ~30% of individuals with increasing anxiety-depression levels. </p

Finally, we suggest new areas for future research on revolutionizing services with cutting-edge technologies post major exogenous shocks. We focus on four main themes for future research namely: (1) new technologies and revolutionized services (2) fit for purpose technology-enabled services (3) service resilience and flexibility and (4) academic-industry collaboration
