Feminist Corporate Social Responsibility:Reframing CSR as a Critical Force for Good

    Get PDF
While corporate social responsibility (CSR) research is now impressively broad, we identify fresh opportunities at the intersection of feminist and critical analysis to reframe this field as a force for good. We focus on the epistemological grounding of CSR in its potential to understand and change how managerial activity is interpreted and influenced for progressive ends. We approach this through a reading of the debate on CSR's limited practical use, to imagine a better methodological and purposeful future for CSR. This involves a different, feminist, political and ethical stance for researchers in relation to CSR as an object, to bring CSR theory and practice into alignment to revive its sense of purpose as a driving organizational force for good through a critical, feminist CSR. Our change‐orientated approach is based on a reading of Judith Butler's notion of critique as praxis of values; it is politically aware, reflexive, and focused on the goal of good organization to address grand, often existential, challenges. We conclude by showing how this approach to CSR brings a more transparent way of analysing practice, requiring reflexive action on the part of those working with CSR initiatives both as practitioners and as researchers to co‐produce better futures

Coma in adult cerebral venous thrombosis:The BEAST study

    Get PDF
Background and purpose: Coma is an independent predictor of poor clinical outcomes in cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT). We aimed to describe the association of age, sex, and radiological characteristics of adult coma patients with CVT. Methods: We used data from the international, multicentre prospective observational BEAST (Biorepository to Establish the Aetiology of Sinovenous Thrombosis) study. Only positively associated variables with coma with <10% missing data in univariate analysis were considered for the multivariate logistic regression model. Results: Of the 596 adult patients with CVT (75.7% women), 53 (8.9%) patients suffered coma. Despite being a female-predominant disease, the prevalence of coma was higher among men than women (13.1% vs. 7.5%, p = 0.04). Transverse sinus thrombosis was least likely to be associated with coma (23.9% vs. 73.3%, p < 0.001). The prevalence of superior sagittal sinus thrombosis was higher among men than women in the coma sample (73.6% vs. 37.5%, p = 0.01). Men were significantly older than women, with a median (interquartile range) age of 51 (38.5–60) versus 40 (33–47) years in the coma (p = 0.04) and 44.5 (34–58) versus 37 (29–48) years in the non-coma sample (p < 0.001), respectively. Furthermore, an age-and superior sagittal sinus-adjusted multivariate logistic regression model found male sex (odds ratio = 1.8, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.0–3.4, p = 0.04 to be an independent predictor of coma in CVT, with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.61 (95% CI = 0.52–0.68, p = 0.01). Conclusions: Although CVT is a female-predominant disease, men were older and nearly twice as likely to suffer from coma than women

Sustainable Manufacturing Evaluation of the Food Industry:A Case of Rice Manufacturing

    Get PDF
The food industry remains one of the significant sectors supporting the world economy. The continuous rapid population growth will surely increase the demand for food. Thus, it is imperative to consider the continuous improvement that will support sustainability in food manufacturing. The food industry needs to work on ensuring sustainable manufacturing implementation or integration into processes and product outputs. Hence, this paper needs to assess emerging technologies and practices as the sector faces the challenges of developing and maintaining a sustainable food supply. Therefore, the entire sustainability aspect of agricultural food production (rice production in particular), processing, and integrated supply chain will need to be investigated to ensure that sustainable practices are embedded adequately within the processing supply chain. The analytical hierarchy process (AHP) approach is used in this study together with a predetermined set of key performance indicators (KPIs) to analyze the sustainability performance of the food manufacturing industry and facilitate the creation of a strategy. The result identified “environmental” as the most paramount sustainability factor, with other highly ranked indicators that cover the three factors

Unlocking AI Literacy:The SMaILE-App Gaming Experience

    Get PDF
AI's promise to become embedded in every aspect of modern life is quickly becoming a reality. However, a significant gap emerges in educational resources tailored for adolescents. This void often cultivates misconceptions about AI's capabilities and potential risks. To close this gap, we present SMaILE-App, a novel educational cross-platform app designed to foster AI literacy among individuals aged 10 to 18. While inclusive, the app design is purposely biased towards rectifying the gender gap in STEM. Applying a constructionist educational framework, SMaILE-App promotes learning AI fundamentals through interactive gameplay, merging entertainment with personalized knowledge acquisition. SMaILE-App comprises a suite of \emph{minigames} in an engaging narrative, each focusing on a different AI concept, as well as interactive creational and instructive modules. SMaILE-App rests on two key ideas: AI is not a singular, all-encompassing term but a spectrum of methodologies, each with its nuances, and AI is not without its limitations

Does This Look Infected? Hidden Host Plant Infection by the Pathogen Botrytis cinerea Alters Interactions between Plants, Aphids and Their Natural Enemies in the Field

    Get PDF
Few studies have considered whether hidden (asymptomatic) plant pathogen infection alters ecological interactions at the higher trophic levels, even though such infection still affects plant physiology. We explored this question in two field experiments, where two varieties of lettuce (Little Gem, Tom Thumb) infected with Botrytis cinerea were either (1) naturally colonised by aphids or (2) placed in the field with an established aphid colony. We then recorded plant traits and the numbers and species of aphids, their predators, parasitoids and hyperparasitoids. Infection significantly affected plant quality. In the first experiment, symptomatically infected plants had the fewest aphids and natural enemies of aphids. The diversity and abundance of aphids did not differ between asymptomatically infected and uninfected Little Gem plants, but infection affected the aphid assemblage for Tom Thumb plants. Aphids on asymptomatically infected plants were less attractive to predators and parasitoids than those on uninfected plants, while hyperparasitoids were not affected. In the second experiment, when we excluded natural enemies, aphid numbers were lower on asymptomatically and symptomatically infected plants, but when aphid natural enemies were present, this difference was removed, most likely because aphids on uninfected plants attracted more insect natural enemies. This suggests that hidden pathogen infection may have important consequences for multitrophic interactions

Egalitarian Greetings:The Social Spread of the Handshake in Urbanising Britain, 1700-1850

    Get PDF
Handshaking has a long multi-cultural history. This article focuses upon its diffusion in Britain 1700–1850. Two networks boosted the handshaking salutation. One was a mercantile network, extending across Europe’s urban/commercial regions. The other featured ‘middling sort’ Quaker men and women, who shook hands on principle. Gradually, the salutation became widely diffused – and acquired a range of egalitarian meanings. Handshaking was not an elite practice which ‘trickled down’ to the masses. Instead, it spread by social negotiation both ‘upwards’ and ‘downwards’ from middle-class society. Traditional hierarchy was yielding to an urbanizing and internationalizing world – with multiple individual options
