    AI-Enhanced Ethical Hacking: A Linux-Focused Experiment

    This technical report investigates the integration of generative AI (GenAI), specifically ChatGPT, into the practice of ethical hacking through a comprehensive experimental study and conceptual analysis. Conducted in a controlled virtual environment, the study evaluates GenAI’s effectiveness across the key stages of penetration testing on Linux-based target machines operating within a virtual local area network (LAN), including reconnaissance, scanning and enumeration, gaining access, maintaining access, and covering tracks. The findings confirm that GenAI can significantly enhance and streamline the ethical hacking process while underscoring the importance of balanced human-AI collaboration rather than the complete replacement of human input. The report also critically examines potential risks such as misuse, data biases, hallucination, and over-reliance on AI.     Ultra-Efficient Modulators Based on Chalcogenide and Graphene Materials for AI Hyperscalers

    Driven by the global growth in AI services, the demand for efficient hardware is at an all-time high in the race for continued performance scaling of hyperscale data centers. Integrated photonics devices have emerged as a promising alternative for reducing energy consumption. We report an optical modulator design that incorporates chalcogenide and graphene materials to achieve the minimal power consumption per bit during high-speed operation. The device design and its energy consumption performance are presented. Our results pave the way for ultra-efficient modulators revealing operations at high-speed modulation bandwidth up to 104 GHz whilst reducing energy consumption to 52.3 fJ/bit

    Evaluating the Effects of an Online Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Intervention for Elevated Paranoia and Low Mood: A Single Case Experimental Design

    Elevated paranoia is common in the general population, particularly in young adults, and can cause significant distress and issues in social functioning. Paranoia often co-occurs with low mood, and so flexible interventions that can help with a range of experiences would be well suited to the needs of this group. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is a transdiagnostic behaviour therapy which may be able to fill this gap. The current study used a multiple baseline single case experimental design (SCED) to investigate the impact of a six-session ACT intervention with eleven university students experiencing elevated paranoia and low mood. Half the participants were randomised to complete the ENGAGE module first (focused on personal values and goals) and the OPEN modules second (focused on mindfulness skills), and the other half completed the intervention in the reverse order. Participants completed daily measures of paranoia, positive and negative affect, and ACT processes which were evaluated using visual and Tau-U analysis. They also completed standardised questionnaires on paranoia, depression, anxiety, stress and psychological flexibility at four time points which were analysed using reliable and clinically significant change. A two week follow up period was used to assess whether improvements were maintained. Both groups showed a reliable improvement on trait paranoia, however the ENGAGE-first group showed larger improvements on depression and stress. Neither group significantly improved for anxiety. Only the ENGAGE-first group showed significant improvements on state paranoia and negative affect, while the OPEN-first group showed no change. The study provides tentative evidence that a full ACT intervention is effective for young people experiencing elevated paranoia and low mood particularly when the ENGAGE sessions are delivered first, however results were not consistent across participants.     The Children and Young People’s Books Lexicon (CYP-LEX):A large-scale lexical database of books read by children and young people in the United Kingdom

    This article introduces CYP-LEX, a large-scale lexical database derived from books popular with children and young people in the United Kingdom. CYP-LEX includes 1,200 books evenly distributed across three age bands (7–9, 10–12, 13+) and comprises over 70 million tokens and over 105,000 types. For each word in each age band, we provide its raw and Zipf-transformed frequencies, all parts-of-speech in which it occurs with raw frequency and lemma for each occurrence, and measures of count-based contextual diversity. Together and individually, the three CYP-LEX age bands contain substantially more words than any other publicly available database of books for primary and secondary school children. Most of these words are very low in frequency, and a substantial proportion of the words in each age band do not occur on British television. Although the three age bands share some very frequent words, they differ substantially regarding words that occur less frequently, and this pattern also holds at the level of individual books. Initial analyses of CYP-LEX illustrate why independent reading constitutes a challenge for children and young people, and they also underscore the importance of reading widely for the development of reading expertise. Overall, CYP-LEX provides unprecedented information into the nature of vocabulary in books that British children aged 7+ read, and is a highly valuable resource for those studying reading and language development
