    Revisiting the evidence for precession in GW200129 with machine learning noise mitigation

    GW200129 is claimed to be the first-ever observation of the spin-disk orbital precession detected with gravitational waves (GWs) from an individual binary system. However, this claim warrants a cautious evaluation because the GW event coincided with a broadband noise disturbance in LIGO Livingston caused by the 45 MHz electro-optic modulator system. In this paper, we present a state-of-the-art neural network that is able to model and mitigate the broadband noise from the LIGO Livingston interferometer. We also demonstrate that our neural network mitigates the noise better than the algorithm used by the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA collaboration. Finally, we re-analyse GW200129 with the improved data quality and show that the evidence for precession is still observed

    The Rise of Human-Machine Collaboration:Managers’ Perceptions of Leveraging Artificial Intelligence for Enhanced B2B Service Recovery

    This research analyzes managers’ perceptions of the multiple types of artificial intelligence (AI) required at each stage of the business-to-business (B2B) service recovery journey for successful human-AI collaboration in this context. Study 1 is an exploratory study that identifies managers’ perceptions of the main stages of a B2B service recovery journey based on human-AI collaboration and the corresponding roles of the human-AI collaboration at each stage. Study 2 provides an empirical examination of the proposed theoretical framework to identify the specific types of intelligence required by AI to enhance performance in each stage of B2B service recovery, based on managers’ perceptions. Our findings show that the prediction stage benefits from collaborations involving processing-speed and visual-spatial AI. The detection stage requires logic-mathematical, social, and processing-speed AI. The recovery stage requires logic-mathematical, social, verbal-linguistic, and processing-speed AI. The post-recovery stage calls for logic-mathematical, social, verbal-linguistic, and processing-speed AI

    A very compact metamaterial-based triple-band sensor in terahertz spectrum as a perfect absorber for human blood cancer diagnostics

    In this dynamic environment, early cancer identification and surveillance have become vital problems. This research paper explores the development of a small, three-band sensor harnessing the potential of terahertz (THz) technology and metamaterials (MTMs) to diagnose blood cancer. This sensor holds the promise of a paradigm shift in the diagnosis and treatment of blood cancer by offering a non-invasive, highly accurate approach. Terahertz radiation, occupying the unique "THz gap" in the electromagnetic spectrum, is now accessible due to recent technological breakthroughs. This work simplifies the design of multiple-band metamaterial absorbers, enhancing their effectiveness and expanding their sensing capabilities. Through the integration of THz technology, metamaterial engineering, and cancer detection, the suggested sensor seeks to launch a new phase of rapid, precise, and non-invasive blood cancer diagnosis. The proposed structure capable of distinguishing cancer and normal cell with 1GHz sensitivity. Although, this difference looks similar it would be easy when we consider the THz technology devices. This work represents a significant step forward in non-invasive, accurate diagnostics for blood cancer, promising to revolutionize the way this disease is diagnosed and treated. The novel strategy put out has a lot of promise to advance medical diagnostics and enhance patient outcomes

    Gene-Gene Interaction Between Factor-XI and ABO Genes in Cerebral Venous Thrombosis:The BEAST Study

    Background and ObjectivesGene-gene interactions likely contribute to the etiology of multifactorial diseases such as cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) and could be one of the main sources of known missing heritability. We explored Factor XI (F11) and ABO gene interactions among patients with CVT.MethodsPatients with CVT of European ancestry from the large Bio-Repository to Establish the Aetiology of Sinovenous Thrombosis (BEAST) international collaboration were recruited. Codominant modelling was used to determine interactions between genome-wide identified F11 and ABO genes with CVT status.ResultsWe studied 882 patients with CVT and 1,205 ethnically matched control participants (age: 42 ± 15 vs 43 ± 12 years, p = 0.08: sex: 71% male vs 68% female, p = 0.09, respectively). Individuals heterozygous (AT) for the risk allele (T) at both loci (rs56810541/F11 and rs8176645/ABO) had a 3.9 (95% CI 2.74–5.71, p = 2.75e-13) increase in risk of CVT. Individuals homozygous (TT) for the risk allele at both loci had a 13.9 (95% CI 7.64–26.17, p = 2.0e-15) increase in risk of CVT. The presence of a non-O blood group (A, B, AB) combined with TT/rs56810541/F11 increased CVT risk by OR = 6.8 (95% CI 4.54–10.33, p = 2.00e15), compared with blood group-O combined with AA.DiscussionInteractions between factor XI and ABO genes increase risk of CVT by 4- to 14-fold

    A Method Worth Telling:Using Story Completion to Understand Social Work Responses to Discriminatory Abuse

    Story completion methods have not yet been used in social work research, but the method has significant potential in this area. This paper reports on findings of a qualitative story completion study, which set out to understand professional responses to discriminatory abuse in English safeguarding adults practice. Fifty-six social worker and social care worker participants responded to a ‘story stem’, which refers to the opening lines of a story, continuing a story they choose to tell in response. In this instance, the story stem introduces a fictional scenario involving a social worker who is visiting an adult who has experienced discriminatory abuse. Story completion was chosen because it does not require self-report and this was useful given the under-reporting of discriminatory abuse. Story completion is appropriate for studying taboo or sensitive topics because it is less exposing, producing stories rather than accounts of one’s practice. Story completion also allowed contrast and comparison across different characteristics that might be targeted in discriminatory abuse, spotlighting divergent responses to discrimination based on transgender identity, race and mental ill-health. Dramaturgical narrative analysis was used to make sense of the resulting stories and three narratives were identified: anxious allies, affirmative advocates and administrative assessors. There were a small number of outliers who did not complete stories based on the guidelines provided. The results suggest workforce development needs in relation to discriminatory abuse. The article concludes with a reflection on the ways in which social work research can draw on story completion methods in the future

    Individual Rationality in Topological Distance Games is Surprisingly Hard

    In the recently introduced topological distance games, strategic agents need to be assigned to a subset of vertices of a topology. In the assignment, the utility of an agent depends on both the agent's inherent utilities for other agents and its distance from them on the topology. We study the computational complexity of finding individually rational outcomes; this notion is widely assumed to be the very minimal stability requirement and requires that the utility of every agent in a solution is non-negative. We perform a comprehensive study of the problem's complexity, and we prove that even in very basic cases, deciding whether an individually rational solution exists is intractable. To reach at least some tractability, one needs to combine multiple restrictions of the input instance, including the number of agents and the topology and the influence of distant agents on the utility
