Nonparametric e-tests of symmetry
The notion of an e-value has been recently proposed as a possible alternative to critical regions and p-values in statistical hypothesis testing. In this paper we consider testing the nonparametric hypothesis of symmetry, introduce analogues for e-values of three popular nonparametric tests, define an analogue for e-values of Pitman's asymptotic relative efficiency, and apply it to the three nonparametric tests. We discuss limitations of our simple definition of asymptotic relative efficiency and list directions of further research
Adam Michna z Otradovic and His ‘Christmas Eve’
The Czech devotional verse ‘Vánoční noc’ (‘Christmas Eve’) by Adam Michna z Otradovic, first published in his Česká mariánská muzika (Prague, 1647), and one of the best-known poems by its author, is offered in partial English translation. As a poem it is poesia per musica, intended for musical setting; a close reading of details of the poem in its musical context yields unexpected layers of meaning, and suggests that it may serve as a model for improving modern interpretations of Czech Baroque poetry more broadly
Unleashed: walking dogs off the lead greatly increases habitat disturbance in UK lowland heathlands
Human population growth is associated with increased disturbance to wildlife. This effect is particularly acute in urban and periurban areas, where the area of effective disturbance extends beyond that of human presence by the roaming behaviour of pet dogs. Dogs are globally the dominant companion animal, with a population of ~ 12 million in the UK. As urban areas extend, dogs are exercised in green space close to housing. In southeast and southern England these areas include lowland heath, a habitat of high conservation value. To quantify disturbance caused by dog walkers and their dogs, we used GPS units to track the movement of people and their dogs across four lowland heath sites, used a questionnaire to ask about dog walking habits, and mapped potential areas of disturbance caused by dog walkers. Questionnaires were completed by 798 dog walkers and the walks of 162 owners and their 185 dogs were recorded. Mean (± SE) walk time was 56 ± 23 min, walk distance 3.75 ± 1.68 km and dogs were a median distance of 20 m from the owner during walks. Dogs were walked once (44%) or twice (56%) a day. Most (always: 85%; always or occasionally: 95%) dogs were walked off the lead even when signs were present requesting that dogs were kept on a lead. This resulted in up to a 21% increase in reserve area disturbed. In one reserve (Snelsmore Common), > 90% of the area was disturbed by dogs, greatly eroding its conservation value. This work highlights the importance of considering how dog ownership can exacerbate levels of disturbance in sensitive periurban habitats when housing developments are planned
Distance-Targeting Mutation Operator for Evolutionary Design of 3D Structures
Evolutionary design of 3D structures - an automated design by the methods of evolutionary algorithms - is a hard optimization problem. One of the contributing factors is a complex genotype-to-phenotype mapping often associated with the genetic representations of the designs. In such case, the genetic operators may exhibit low locality, i.e., a small change introduced in a genotype may result in a significant change in the phenotype and its fitness, hampering the search process. To overcome this challenge in evolutionary design, we introduce the Distance-Targeting Mutation Operator (DTM). The aim of this operator is to create offspring whose distance to the parent solution, according to a selected dissimilarity measure, approximates a predefined value. We compare the performance of the DTM operator to the performance of the mutation operator without parent-offspring distance control in a series of evolutionary experiments. We use different genetic representations, dissimilarity measures, and optimization goals, including velocity and height of active and passive 3D structures. The introduced DTM operator outperforms the standard one in terms of best fitness in most of the considered cases
A Qualitative feasibility and acceptability study of an Acceptance and Commitment-based bibliotherapy intervention for people with cancer
Self-directed bibliotherapy interventions can be effective means of psychological support for individuals with cancer, yet mixed findings as to the efficacy of these interventions indicate the need for further research. We investigated the experience of individuals with cancer after using a new self-help book, based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Ten participants with cancer (nine females and one male, 40-89 years old) were given access to a bibliotherapy self-help ACT-based book and participated in post-intervention semi-structured interviews. Five themes were generated from reflexive thematic analysis: (1) The value of bibliotherapy (2) Timing is important (3) Resonating with cancer experiences (4) Tools of the book (5) ACT in action. The book was found to be acceptable (self-directed, accessible, understandable content, good responsiveness to exercises) and feasible (easy to use, ACT-consistent). Although not explicitly evaluated, participants' reports indicated defusion, present moment awareness, and consideration of values, as the ACT processes that contributed to adjustment, via helping them to regain control over their lives and become more present within the moment. Findings also indicate that the intervention may be best accessed following completion of initial medical treatment
The Pedagogical Benefits of Sensory Archaeology:A Case Study on Roman Britain
Archaeology, by its very nature, is a highly sensorial discipline. Teaching archaeology should be equally sensorially engaging. However, modern higher education prioritizes the visual and the auditory, and while handling sessions, laboratory work, and site visits are often part of a standard archaeology degree, they vary heavily based on departmental and student resources. At the same time, archaeology is in something of a crisis, tackling a lack of diversity, reduced funding, and a deep legacy of colonialism. This article demonstrates how the incorporation of the theories and methods of sensory archaeology into higher education curriculum can add sensorial density to a degree, enhance research, and at the same time help alleviate some of our current crises. As the first paper to explore the use of sensory archaeology in university education, it also makes an important contribution to the rather limited field of archaeological pedagogical research
What can we learn about integration of novel words into semantic memory from automatic semantic priming?
According to the Complementary Learning Systems model of word learning, only integrated novel words can interact with familiar words during lexical selection. The pre-registered study reported here is the first to examine behavioural and electrophysiological markers of integration in a task that relies primarily on automatic semantic processing. 71 young adults learned novel names for two sets of novel concepts, one set on each of two consecutive days. On Day 2, learning was followed by a continuous primed lexical decision task with EEG recording. In the N400 window, novel names trained immediately before testing differed from both familiar and untrained novel words, and, in the time window between 500ms-800ms post onset, they also differed from novel names that had undergone a 24-hour consolidation, for which a small behavioural priming effect was observed. We develop an account that attributes the observed effects to processes rooted in episodic, rather than semantic, memory
