Predictive analytics in aviation management
The aviation industry has undergone significant changes driven by technological advancements and changing consumer demands (Joseph 2023). One area that has seen notable growth is Predictive Analytics (PA), which involves using historical information to determine trends and forecast future occurrences (IBM 2022). Predictive analytics has become increasingly important in the aviation industry and is driven by the need to improve safety, make better decisions and improve passenger satisfaction and experience (RTS Labs 2023). As data plays an increasingly integral role in the industry, predictive analytics will become even more prevalent. The Aviation industry faces several issues, including flight delays and cancellations, unscheduled maintenance and repair, inefficient fuel consumption and passenger dissatisfaction (Awasthi 2018). This paper aims to select a digital technology to enhance the operations of the aviation industry and improve the passenger experience. The chosen digital technology is Predictive Analytics (PA). Following this, the identification of Strategic Information Systems (SIS) opportunities and their impacts will be discussed, considering competitive edge feasibility, risks, and challenges to implementing the chosen technology. Following the analysis, a recommendation will be proposed to implement the PA technology or maintain current operations (Laudon and Laudon 2018)

Periodic silicon metasurfaces for high performance structural color
Structural color can be divided into plasmonic structural color and all-dielectric structural color, and dielectric structural color is becoming the first choice for making structural color because of its high color saturation and low cost. In this work, a large area of silicon-based structural color was fabricated using the Taber effect based on laser interference theory from commercial silicon-on-insulator (SOI) substrates on the basis of FDTD simulation. Consequently, periodic grating silicon metasurfaces with a width of 106 nm can achieve a maximum spectral reflectance of up to 91% at 650-700 nm, which can produce bright red structural color, providing a reliable way for the fabrication of low cost and high performance dielectric structural color at low cost
Optimization of shark groove drag reduction based on CFD and genetic algorithm
An optimization of shark scale flake groove structure by genetic algorithm is proposed to enhance its drag reduction performance. The microstructure of shark scales has been shown to play a key role in reducing frictional drag and enhancing hydrodynamic efficiency. Therefore, a genetic algorithm was used to optimize the design of the groove shape of the scales to exhibit optimal performance in the fluid environment. Genetic algorithms of selection, crossover and mutation are used to find the optimal solution in the design space. The optimized design is validated by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) technique. The CFD simulation results demonstrate the improved hydrodynamic performance of the optimized groove design and confirm the effectiveness of genetic algorithms in complex engineering design problems. This study provides a new research avenue to improve the hydrodynamic efficiency

Stakeholder perspectives on the type and duration of supplemental milk for infants under six months with growth faltering
Background Growth faltering is a significant public health issue among infants aged <6 months (m). Supplemental milk is commonly used for infants with growth faltering, with variations in type and duration. We systematically synthesized and examined evidence from qualitative studies on stakeholder perspectives about equity, feasibility, and acceptability of the type and duration of supplemental milk for infants aged <6m with growth faltering to inform the latest WHO guideline on prevention and management of growth faltering in infants aged <6m. Methods We conducted a comprehensive search of six electronic databases in addition to manual searches to identify all qualitative studies published during January 2000 to June 2022 on stakeholder perspectives on type and duration of supplemental milk. Identified articles were screened in two stages against the inclusion criteria with titles and abstract screened first followed by full-text screening. Included studies were quality appraised using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme checklist. The primary outcomes were equity, feasibility, and acceptability of the type and duration of supplemental milk for infants <6m with growth faltering. Results Eighteen studies, reporting perspectives of mothers, fathers, grandmothers and healthcare providers were included. Studies were conducted in North America (9), Africa (5), Asia (3) and South Australia (1). Donor human milk (DHM) (13) and infant formula (9) were the most commonly reported supplementary milks followed by cow/goat milk (2). Key factors that were seen to influence equity, feasibility, and acceptability were: education/awareness, socio-economic status (SES), race and religion, practicality, availability of resources, sustainability, cost, affective attitude, perceived effectiveness and ethicality. Maternal/caregiver related factors was a key sub-theme in stakeholder perspectives across all three supplemental milk feeds, acting as either a barrier or facilitator for uptake. Conclusions DHM and infant formula were the most commonly reported supplemental feed for infants aged <6m with growth faltering. The importance of maternal/care giver factors need to be taken into consideration to ensure equity, feasibility, and acceptability with respect to type and duration of supplemental milk for infants aged <6m with growth faltering
What does the mid-1990s soybean liberalization tell us about the role of foreign investment in China's rural industrialization?
This article reassesses the role of foreign investments in China’s rural industrialization in the 1980s and the early 1990s. It draws upon the power disputes between agribusiness transnational corporations (TNCs) and central domestic players in the country’s soybean complex. I follow Chris Bramall’s argument that food processing infrastructure grew progressively since the Maoist era in the 1960s and 1970s, instead of springing from foreign investments or pro-business local state officials during the reform and opening up. However, I go beyond this assumption by suggesting that foreign investments often had a detrimental role in rural industrialization, depending on their political action. I show through in-depth empirical analyses that due to the Maoist industrial legacy, soybean processors from Northeast China consolidated an endogenous form of accumulation based on local circuits of production and consumption under state protectionism. This specific industrialization trajectory has put them on opposite sides from agribusiness TNCs. The liberalization agenda pushed by the TNCs through bilateral and multilateral levels of influence culminated in the opening of China’s soybean imports in the late 1990s, allowing the consolidation of their global trade monopoly to the detriment of domestic players
The impact of life experiences on learning and the return to formal education in the HE classroom
The told life journeys of learners returning to formal education are important to recognise, first, to name the learning that occurs in the social contexts of family, community and work; and second, to appreciate the compelling connection between this learning and higher education (HE). The concept of what is viewed as important in education lies at the heart of this chapter, which is based on the author’s doctoral study that was focussed on giving voice to the often-overlooked, mature part-time student, in order to recognise their brought assets, gained through past experiences. A biographical approach using semi-structured interviews based on a life-history grid allowed for the voices of the learners to be heard and their stories acknowledged. Findings indicate learning does arise from the everyday and there is a pattern to what is said about the specific intra- and interpersonal skills accrued. Past experiences are a resource for the adult learner, and time spent away from the classroom is not a learning gap. The resulting affective assets are significant to academic study, enhancing and supporting the cognitive. HE needs to see the value of this learning and its resulting assets, including motivation, resilience, independence, team work and emotional intelligence, to resurrect the social justice agenda of ‘Widening Participation and Lifelong Learning’ and seize this academic potential for the benefit of the learners and the academy alike
How reforms of teacher education challenge principles of social justice
This chapter draws on the experiences of a secondary initial teacher education (ITE) director to discuss how changes in the ITE system and organisation in England in the past few decades have reflected the ongoing marketisation of education, first introduced in the 1988 Education Act, and the imposed marketised focus on competition between ITE providers and choice for ‘consumers’ – that is, ITE students and schools. He comments on how, in his view, decision-making associated with these changes contravenes what he sees as issues of social justice in the way that it has served to marginalise and silence the voices of teacher educators in higher education institutions (HEIs)
