Sharing stories, food and passports: forced migration, museum and memory activism in contemporary Germany
This article uses the online exhibition ‘Arriving: Life after Forced Migration’ by the Marienfelde Refugee Center Museum in Berlin as a case study to investigate how museum activism can contribute to creating and disseminating memories about contemporary forced migration. Employing a close visual and textual analysis of the online exhibition combined with insights from recent discourses on museum activism, migration and memory studies, the article explores which forms of memory the exhibition creates, how these memories emerge and to which end they are used. The analysis firstly illustrates how the exhibition creates a space for communicative memory to surface within the portrayed refugee families through the sharing of stories, objects and food from ‘home’. Secondly, it goes on to argue that the exhibition engages in memory activism by humanizing the portrayed individuals, exposing discriminatory state practices and challenging the audience through provocative questions. Thirdly, the article submits that this online exhibition contributes to a growing transnational archive of forced migration memories. Comprised of a multitude of online platforms dedicated to collecting, preserving and sharing forced migration stories, this archive stimulates multidirectional memory making and allows counter narratives to surface within an increasingly divided Europe

Utilization of a blockchainized reputation management service for performance enhancement of Smart Grid 2.0 applications
Blockchain has become the technology enabler in delivering modern Smart Grid 2.0 functionalities. Many services including Peer-to-Peer energy trading, distribution network management, financial settlements, and energy data management are catered through blockchain-enabled platforms. However, areas such as service quality-based pricing strategies, supply–demand balancing in distribution system to attain enhanced reliability and consumption-oriented rewarding mechanisms need improving in order to achieve the full benefits of the envisaged grid architecture. In response, this study proposes a novel Blockchain-as-a-Service for Energy Trading (BaaSET) platform, which offers reputation-based services, executed through smart contracts for smart grid applications. Reputation-based grid operations are automatically executed through smart contracts deployed onto a blockchain. The reputation is estimated using power quality and reliability indices, obtained through grid measurements. Further, tests have been conducted to evaluate the associated latency and the implementation cost of the proposed blockchainized service architecture. Test results signify the performance to be comparatively better considering the state-of-the-art. The results further suggest alternatives to improve the scalability of the architecture, to cater the increasing number of stakeholders in the SG 2.0 environment
Centrifugal pump fault detection with convolutional neural network transfer learning
The centrifugal pump is the workhorse of many industrial and domestic applications, such as water supply, wastewater treatment and heating. While modern pumps are reliable, their unexpected failures may jeopardise safety or lead to significant financial losses. Consequently, there is a strong demand for early fault diagnosis, detection and predictive monitoring systems. Most prior work on machine learning-based centrifugal pump fault detection is based on either synthetic data, simulations or data from test rigs in controlled laboratory conditions. In this research, we attempted to detect centrifugal pump faults using data collected from real operational pumps deployed in various places in collaboration with a specialist pump engineering company. The detection was done by the binary classification of visual features of DQ/Concordia patterns with residual networks. Besides using a real dataset, this study employed transfer learning from the image detection domain to systematically solve a real-life problem in the engineering domain. By feeding DQ image data into a popular and high-performance residual network (e.g., ResNet-34), the proposed approach achieved up to 85.51% classification accuracy
The impact of life experiences on learning and the return to formal education in the HE classroom
The told life journeys of learners returning to formal education are important to recognise, first, to name the learning that occurs in the social contexts of family, community and work; and second, to appreciate the compelling connection between this learning and higher education (HE). The concept of what is viewed as important in education lies at the heart of this chapter, which is based on the author’s doctoral study that was focussed on giving voice to the often-overlooked, mature part-time student, in order to recognise their brought assets, gained through past experiences. A biographical approach using semi-structured interviews based on a life-history grid allowed for the voices of the learners to be heard and their stories acknowledged. Findings indicate learning does arise from the everyday and there is a pattern to what is said about the specific intra- and interpersonal skills accrued. Past experiences are a resource for the adult learner, and time spent away from the classroom is not a learning gap. The resulting affective assets are significant to academic study, enhancing and supporting the cognitive. HE needs to see the value of this learning and its resulting assets, including motivation, resilience, independence, team work and emotional intelligence, to resurrect the social justice agenda of ‘Widening Participation and Lifelong Learning’ and seize this academic potential for the benefit of the learners and the academy alike
