Eduard Philipp Körberi keskaegsete hauaplaatide mudelid: Eduard Philipp Körber's models of medieval grave slabs

    No full text
Eduard Philipp Körber (1770–1850) was a pastor in Tartu county. Heis known to posterity as an avid local historian. In this article, we lookat a collection of models Körber made of grave slabs in the churchesof Estonia and Latvia. The 18 models that have survived are carvedout of stone and about the size of postcards, with information as wellas a signature and a date on the back. The models were later ownedby the learned societies in Tallinn and Tartu. Nowadays they are inthe Estonian History Museum and the Estonian National Museum.Until World War II the collection was used by Estonian, Latvian, and German researchers. Some of the grave slabs depicted had beendestroyed or were inaccessible. Photographs of the models were usedas illustrations for books. One model was even used as an examplefor restoring the original grave slab. The models are carved withgreat care and detail, but researchers drew attention to discrepanciesbetween originals and models, calling for caution. Nevertheless, thecollection remained in use, with each publication adding to its credibility. The material of the models was described by Körber as slate(Schiefer). However, the information in his correspondence about thelocation where he acquired the stone as well as close inspection of themodels led us to conclude that it is graptolitic argillite. We reenactedgathering pieces of it from the shores of the Jägala river in Harjucounty and experimented with using different tools to carve it. Graptoliticargillite proved to be easy to acquire and model, which could bethe reason why Körber used this unconventional material

Eesti Haridusteaduste Ajakirja kaheksanda vabanumbri artiklid peegeldavad praegust haridusmaastikku.

Hisi kimbu vasaku sääre piirkonna stimulatsioon (left bundle branch area pacing – LBBAP) on uudne ning praktikas maailmas kõige kiiremini populaarsust koguv meetod, mille eesmärk on pakkuda Hisi kimbu vasakute juhteteede kaudu palju füsioloogilisemat kardiostimulatsiooni, ennetades seeläbi südamepuudulikkuse arengut. Kuigi esialgsed kliinilised uuringud on kinnitanud selle metoodika tõhusust ja ohutust, on suuremahulised kliinilised uuringud veel pooleli. Eestis alustasid autorid LBBAP meetodil stimulaatorite paigaldamisega 2023. a märtsis ja aasta jooksul on see meetod jõudnud meie igapäevasesse kliinilisse praktikasse

    Nikaia usutunnistuse 1700. aastapäevaks

For the 1700th Anniversary of the Nicene CreedThis article focuses on the Nicene Creed of AD 325, which is the basis for the „Nicene“ Creed of AD 381 that is used for baptism and in liturgy. Despite being such a momentous phenomenon, the story of the birth of the Nicene Creed is shrouded in mystery. Historians have at their disposal only very few fragmentary, polemical and contradictory accounts. Hence the difficulty of saying what exactly happened at Nicaea. This article presents the little evidence there is, discusses some possible historical scenarios and deconstructs some later myths about the birth of the first ecumenical creed. It hopes to demonstrate the particularity of the creed of 325 and assign it a proper place in the history of creeds

The Establishment of mutant mouse strain showing eosinophilia: Eosinophilia without IL-5 increasement

    No full text
Eosinophilia is a pathological condition characterized by increased eosinophils in tissues and peripheral blood. The type 2 immune response causes eosinophilia, and interleukin-5 (IL-5) secreted by T helper 2 (Th2) cells is essential for increasing eosinophils. However, it is unclear whether there is another mechanism for the increase in eosinophil other than IL-5 upregulation. The present study found high eosinophils in the ICR mice and established inbred mice with hypereosinophilia, named “Yama mouse”, through brother-sister mating. The eosinophils in the peripheral blood of 6-week-old Yama mice were 30-fold higher than those in ICR mice, and Yama mice did not have visible lesions. The IL-5 expression had no significant difference in the spleen, mesenteric lymph nodes, or bone marrow of ICR and Yama mice. Yama mice revealed a mechanism for increased eosinophil counts other than that of IL-5 upregulation. Yama mice exhibit eosinophilia without artificial treatment; therefore, they are a good animal model for studying allergic diseases and regenerative medicine, in which eosinophils are important

Rescue excavations in Tallinn Vabaduse Square and Ingermanland bastion 2008-2009: Päästekaevamised Tallinnas Vabaduse väljakul ja Ingeri bastionil 2008-2009

    No full text
From March 2008 until July 2009 various large-scale rescue excavations took place in Tallinn Vabaduse Square and Ingermanland bastion 2008-2009. As a whole, it was the biggest archaeological urban one-year dig ever undertaken in Estonia, altogether ca. 13,000 m2 was investigated. New information was got for both the flank of the bastion of Ingermanland and the tenaille in Vabaduse Square, which was not available from written records. A very large area by Tallinn’s standards – ca. 5,000 m2 – of medieval and early modern suburb was studied with a historic road pavement and building remains attached to it. The article includes analysis of the collected fish bones, plant macrofossils and pollen samples
