Towards an Estonian dataset on document-level subjectivity

This article discusses a preparatory step towards developing an Estonian dataset on subjectivity, providing a brief overview of past analyses of subjectivity and the theoretical basis for creating the dataset. Subjectivity has been explored within many fields of linguistics, including pragmatics and formal semantics, as well as natural language processing where computational methods are used to create models for detecting subjectivity, often for further processing. However, many of these models could be improved, and for some it is questionable whether they classify subjectivity or something else, such as text genre. These issues are caused by the datasets these models are trained on, from the text collection method to the unnuanced labels of “objective” and “subjective”. To solve this issue, we propose a dataset of documents from various registers with annotations for subjectivity with a scalar value, where zero represents a fully objective document and one a subjective document. Kokkuvõte. Karl Gustav Gailit, Kadri Muischnek, Kairit Sirts: Eestikeelse terviktekstide subjektiivsuse andmestiku suunas. Artikkel selgitab eestikeelse subjektiivsuse andmestiku loomise ettevalmistavat sammu, andes seejuures ülevaate varasematest subjektiivsuse käsitlustest ning teoreetilise aluse andmestiku koostamiseks. Subjektiivsust on käsitletud mitmes lingvistika harus, sh pragmaatikas ja formaalses semantikas, aga ka loomuliku keele töötluses, kus kasutatakse arvutuslikke meetodeid, et luua mudeleid subjektiivsuse tuvastamiseks, mille eesmärk on sageli andmestiku edasi töötlemine. Mitut sellist mudelit on võimalik edasi arendada, mitme puhul tekib aga küsimus, kas need klassifitseerivad subjektiivsust või midagi muud, näiteks žanrit. Probleemid on tingitud andmestikest, mille peal on mudelid treenitud, kuidas tekste on kogutud ning sellest, et sildid „objektiivne“ ja „subjektiivne“ on jäigad. Nimetatud probleemide lahendamiseks pakume välja andmestiku, mis sisaldab tekste mitmest registrist ning mis on märgendatud arvuliste subjektiivsuse hinnangutega, kus null tähistab objektiivset teksti ning üks subjektiivset teksti

Multipart Music as Self-determination: Perspectives and Discourses in an Arbëresh Community of Singing Women

Anna Stratigò (b. 1958) is an influential singer, musician and songwriter within the landscape of Arbëresh traditional music. She organises singing gatherings where she also holds important discussions about the role of women in the practice and transmission of traditional music. She established the Vuxhë Grash (Voices of Women) choir in 2017 and has been its leader since then. The choir includes several women from the village of Lungro (Province of Cosenza, Calabria, Italy) who regularly take part in the learning and performing of songs from the Arbëresh oral tradition. The learning sessions occur in self-managed, participatory meetings where each participant has the opportunity to experience the reviving of unique songs together with others, exploring and examining the repertoire during friendly singing sessions. These gatherings serve as the heart of their music-making process

Mentorship is a relationship-focused practice that playsa significant role in supporting the development of young officers. This researchsets out to describe and systematise cadets’ expectations for mentorship at theEstonian Military Academy. The article examines three areas of mentorship: cadets’experiences with the current mentorship programme, their perception of the differentroles of mentors and mentees, and finally their expectations for mentorshipin the Estonian Military Academy. This qualitative phenomenological research wasconducted with semi-structured interviews in three focus groups. The results of thestudy reveal that the cadets, based on their previous experiences and role perceptions, have clear expectations for mentorship both as a programme of developmentand support for their studies. When we compared the results of this study with thecompetency model for military leaders, it revealed that the expectations of cadets formentors are comparable with the leadership competency as described in the model. The results of this study contribute to shaping and implementing mentorship programmesbecause the development of mentorship will ultimately benefit all participantsand the Defence Forces as a whole
