Nuances of Public Diplomacy: China in Chilean Op-Eds (2018-2021)

    Get PDF
This paper explores editorials and opinion columns published in four Chilean mainstream newspapers and analyzes how China is represented within the context of Chinese economic advances in the region and the contextual narratives surrounding bilateral relations. Through a content analysis of editorials and opinion pieces of elite media between 2018 and 2021, this study allows an understanding of how China and its growing influence are perceived locally. Ultimately, despite an overall alignment with China’s public diplomacy centered around an economic-commercial dimension, there are still nuances in how China is represented in Chilean op-eds

The science of bridging differences and the dialogic transformation of conflict: a case study from «This is Us»

In a climate of increasing social and political polarisation, there is much interest in dialogue and bridging differences. This article investigates the dramatisation of dialogic conflict resolution, examining how the psychological science of bridging differences can be utilised to create realistic and emotionally engaging narratives that highlight the transformative impact of dialogue on character development and relational dynamics. Relational conflicts have long been recognised as possible catalysts for character transformation, and complex narratives (Mittell, 2015) are particularly appropriate for a nuanced representation of characters’ psychological experiences throughout the process. This study draws upon extensive psychological and communication research on bridging differences compiled by Shigeoka et al. (2020) and UC Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Center (2021). It reorganises this research into a horizontal timeline of behaviours, highlighting their practical application during the conflict resolution process. It then makes a cognitive poetics analysis of how these behaviours may be observed in a case study of relational conflict from the complex television series This is Us (NBC, 2016-2022). By observing the impact these behaviours have on the transformation of characters, the study explores how credible dialogic relational conflicts can lead to verisimilar character transformation on screen. In addition, it considers how an artistic interpretation of the science of bridging differences can contribute to our understanding of dialogue in practice

La praxis del teatro político en la España decimonónica: el ideario liberal en los dramas románticos de Antonio García Gutiérrez

In this collaboration, we provide clear evidence of how Antonio García Gutiérrez's political theater serves as a platform to present his liberal political thought to the public and to urge citizens to mobilize against abuses of power. Drawing inspiration from past warlike events, García Gutiérrez crafts the plots of El Trovador (1836) and Juan Lorenzo (1865) to allow the audience to interpret them as relevant to the present. Amid the turmoil of military pronouncements and revolutions in Spain, our author takes the side of the liberal cause and declares himself a defender against abuses of power. Through his dramas, he promotes patriotic theater and contributes to the political socialization of Spaniards, as well as to the reinforcement of patriotic and nationalist sentiments. Beyond the confines of the theater of confrontation between absolutists and liberals, García Gutiérrez’s plays aim to reject dogmatic thinking and defend freedom of speech.

Cochlear implantation surgery (CI) is considered a safe procedure and is the standard treatment for the auditory rehabilitation in patients with severe-to-profound sensorineural hearing loss. Although the development of minimally traumatic surgical concepts (MTSC) have enabled the preservation of residual hearing after the implantation, there is scarce literature regarding the vestibular affection following MTCS. The aim of the study is to analyze histopathologic changes in the vestibule after CI in an animal model (Macaca fascicularis). Cochlear implantation was performed successfully in 14 ears following MTCS. They were classified in two groups upon type of electrode array used. Group A (n = 6) with a FLEX 28 electrode array and Group B (n = 8) with HL14 array. A 6-month follow-up was carried out with periodic objective auditory testing. After their sacrifice, histological processing and subsequent analysis was carried out. Intracochlear findings, vestibular presence of fibrosis, obliteration or collapse is analyzed. Saccule and utricle dimensions and neuroepithelium width is measured. Cochlear implantation was performed successfully in all 14 ears through a round window approach. Mean angle of insertion was >270° for group A and 180-270° for group B. In group A auditory deterioration was observed in Mf 1A, Mf2A and Mf5A with histopathological signs of scala tympani ossification, saccule collapse (Mf1A and Mf2A) and cochlear aqueduct obliteration (Mf5A). Besides, signs of endolymphatic sinus dilatation was seen for Mf2B and Mf5A. Regarding group B, no auditory deterioration was observed. Histopathological signs of endolymphatic sinus dilatation were seen in Mf 2B and Mf 8B. In conclusion, the risk of histological damage of the vestibular organs following minimally traumatic surgical concepts and the soft surgery principles is very low. CI surgery is a safe procedure and it can be done preserving the vestibular structures

PurposeAdipokines produced by adipose tissue have been found to be involved in the pathophysiology of metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. We aimed to investigate the relationships of resistin, retinol-binding protein 4 (RBP4) and adiponectin produced by epicardial adipose tissue with coronary artery disease (CAD) and cardiac structure and function.MethodsForty-one non-diabetic males scheduled for cardiothoracic surgery were examined. Anthropometric measurements, echocardiography, coronary angiography, and blood analysis were performed preoperatively. We measured the serum levels of resistin, RBP4, and adiponectin and their mRNA expression in thoracic subcutaneous adipose tissue and two epicardial adipose tissue samples, one close to left anterior descending artery (LAD) (resistin-LAD, RBP4-LAD, adiponectin-LAD), and another close to the right coronary artery (RCA) (resistin-RCA, RBP4-RCA, adiponectin-RCA).ResultsLeft ventricular (LV) ejection fraction correlated negatively with adiponectin-LAD (rho = - 0.390, p = 0.025). The ratio of early to late diastolic transmitral flow velocity, as an index of LV diastolic function, correlated negatively with resistin-LAD (rho = - 0.529, p = 0.024) and RBP4-LAD (rho = - 0.458, p = 0.049). There was no difference in epicardial adipose tissue mRNA expression of resistin, RBP4, and adiponectin between individuals with CAD and those without CAD. When we compared the individuals with CAD in the LAD with those without CAD in the LAD, there was no difference in resistin-LAD, RBP4-LAD, and adiponectin-LAD. There was no difference in resistin-RCA, RBP4-RCA, and adiponectin-RCA between the individuals with CAD in the RCA and those without CAD in the RCA.ConclusionElevation of epicardial adipose tissue mRNA expression of adiponectin was associated with LV systolic dysfunction, while that of both resistin and RBP4 was linked to LV diastolic dysfunction

Inflammation is a common feature in neurodegenerative diseases that contributes to neuronal loss. Previously, we demonstrated that the basal inflammatory tone differed between brain regions and, consequently, the reaction generated to a pro-inflammatory stimulus was different. In this study, we assessed the innate immune reaction in the midbrain and in the striatum using an experimental model of Parkinson's disease. An adeno-associated virus serotype 9 expressing the α-synuclein and mCherry genes or the mCherry gene was administered into the substantia nigra. Myeloid cells (CD11b+ ) and astrocytes (ACSA2+ ) were purified from the midbrain and striatum for bulk RNA sequencing. In the parkinsonian midbrain, CD11b+ cells presented a unique anti-inflammatory transcriptomic profile that differed from degenerative microglia signatures described in experimental models for other neurodegenerative conditions. By contrast, striatal CD11b+ cells showed a pro-inflammatory state and were similar to disease-associated microglia. In the midbrain, a prominent increase of infiltrated monocytes/macrophages was observed and, together with microglia, participated actively in the phagocytosis of dopaminergic neuronal bodies. Although striatal microglia presented a phagocytic transcriptomic profile, morphology and cell density was preserved and no active phagocytosis was detected. Interestingly, astrocytes presented a pro-inflammatory fingerprint in the midbrain and a low number of differentially displayed transcripts in the striatum. During α-synuclein-dependent degeneration, microglia and astrocytes experience context-dependent activation states with a different contribution to the inflammatory reaction. Our results point towards the relevance of selecting appropriate cell targets to design neuroprotective strategies aimed to modulate the innate immune system during the active phase of dopaminergic degeneration

Co-Occurrence of Mycotoxins in Feed for Cattle, Pigs, Poultry, and Sheep in Navarra, a Region of Northern Spain

Mycotoxins, toxic compounds produced by fungi on raw materials, such as cereals, represent a serious health hazard. Animals are exposed to them mainly through the ingestion of contaminated feed. This study presents data about the presence and co-occurrence of nine mycotoxins: aflatoxins B1, B2, G1, and G2, ochratoxins A and B, zearalenone (ZEA), deoxynivalenol (DON), and sterigmatocystin (STER), in 400 samples of compound feed for cattle, pigs, poultry, and sheep (100 samples each) collected in Spain (2019-2020). Aflatoxins, ochratoxins, and ZEA were quantified using a previously validated HPLC method using fluorescence detection; whereas DON and STER were quantified using ELISA. Moreover, the obtained results were compared with those obtained in this country and published in the last 5 years. The mycotoxin presence in Spanish feed, especially for ZEA and DON, has been demonstrated. The maximum individual levels found were: AFB1: 6.9 µg/kg in a sample of feed for poultry; OTA: 65.5 µg/kg in a sample of feed for pigs, DON: 887 µg/kg in a sample of feed for sheep, and ZEA: 816 µg/kg in a sample of feed for pigs. Nevertheless, regulated mycotoxins appear, in general, at levels below those regulated by the EU; in fact, the percentage of samples containing concentrations above these limits was very low (from 0% for DON to 2.5% for ZEA). The co-occurrence of mycotoxins has also been demonstrated: 63.5% of the analyzed samples presented detectable levels of two to five mycotoxins. Due to the fact that the distribution of mycotoxins in raw materials can change greatly from year to year with climate conditions or market globalization, regular mycotoxin monitorization in feed is needed to prevent the integration of contaminated materials in the food chain

An essential benefit of using virtual homologation in railway vehicles is the reduction of the high costs associated with on-track tests, which can be reached by analysing the performance of a railway vehicle under various operating conditions and, thus, by enhancing the vehicle’s design so as to optimise its performance under particular circumstances. In fact, as railway vehicle speed increases, the vehicle’s dynamic performance is affected. This demands the development of validated and accepted models that incorporate the influence of all vehicle components, including the wheel-rail contact, bogie frame, suspension elements, carbody, etc. In order to ensure comfortable trips the secondary suspension system aims to reduce and mitigate the vibration transmission. This suspension element is a complex component composed by a pressurized reinforced elastomeric bellows, which lies into a rubberlike emergency spring, connected though a pipeline or an orifice to a reservoir. In this thesis, the viability of the current secondary suspension models into higher frequencies and different working directions is investigated. Where necessary, new models are proposed to extend the frequency range up to 200 Hz (structural-borne vibration transmission frequency range) or incorporate existing non-linearities. Firstly, the available modelling techniques of air spring type pneumatic suspensions are evaluated according to the frequency range they cover, the component number included (bellows, pneumatic system, full secondary system) and the nonlinearities they can account for. FEM models arise as the most suitable modelling technique for the non-linear multidirectional and multiphysic and high frequency range replica of the secondary suspension system. After all, the suspension system is composed by several elements, including mainly a rubber-cord composite bellows, a rubberlike emergency spring and a moving air mass inside the pneumatic system, which results in a highly non-linear suspension element. One aspect that has been covered is the implementation into FEM models of non-linear behaviour of rubberlike elements (the nearly incompressible behaviour, non-linear elasticity, frequency and excitation-amplitude dependencies), the need of experimental characterization and model calibration. Secondly, the singularities of the bellows, the pneumatic system and the full secondary suspension are investigated separately. As far as the air spring is concerned, a bellows’s FEM model developed in ABAQUS is proposed, which is validated with experimental data. It incorporates the uniaxial reinforcements, the coupling between internal pressure and structural deformation, and the polytropic heat exchange definition between the inner air and the environment. Moreover, based on four surface response functions of the axial and transversal static stiffness and first axial and transversal vibration modes, which are function of seven construction parameters, a design tool is suggested. As an interesting outcome, the suspension system shows vibration modes bellow 200 Hz, in the frequency range which structure-borne vibration transmission takes place. Afterwards, the axial dynamic stiffness of the pneumatic suspension, more precisely of a single-lobe air spring connected to a reservoir via a pipeline is investigated, up to 400Hz. After carrying out an exhaustive experimental campaign, an enhanced FEM model is developed which incorporates the resonances due to the air flow between the bellows and the reservoir, the resonances due to the formation of standing waves in the pipeline and the resonances due to structural dynamics of the bellows. Up to date, available modelling techniques disregard the effect of the auxiliar volume (reservoir and pipeline) above 20 Hz. Nevertheless, this research shows, although that in a lesser extent, it modifies the dynamic performance of the suspension system. In addition, structural modes of the air spring can compromise the isolation above 20 Hz. Finally, a non-linear multiphysic FEM model of the full secondary suspension element, which incorporates the emergency spring to the pneumatic system is developed. Static and dynamic results up to 20 Hz of the FEM model are compared with available experimental data and afterwards, the model is extended up to 300 Hz. The dynamic performance of the suspension system in a pure axial, pure transversal or pure roll movements is predicted. In the three directions the model also predicts resonance frequencies below 200 Hz, which might compromise the isolation. As an application, based on the developed FEM model and with the advantage of avoiding any experimental test, the input parameters of the secondary suspension system model of multibody simulations are derived.Tren-ibilgailuetan homologazio birtuala erabiltzearen onura nagusienetarikoa errailetan bertan burututako saiakuntzekin loturiko kostuak murriztean datza, lan baldintza ezberdinetan ibilgailuaren portaera aztertuz, eta honela, errendimendua hobetze aldera trenaren diseinua optimizatuz. Azken finean, trenaren abiadura handitu ahala, ibilgailuaren errendimendu dinamikoa kaltetu eginen da. Honela, ibilgailuaren elementu guztien eragina barne hartzen dituzten baliozkotutako eta onartutako ereduak garatzea beharezkoa da, besteak beste, errail-gurpil kontaktua, bogiearen bastidorea, esekidura-elementuak, kaxa eta abar. Bidaietan erosotasuna bermatzeko, esekidura-sistema sekundarioaren helburua bibrazioen transmisioa murriztea eta arintzea da. Esekidura-elementu hori elementu konplexua da, zuntzez irmoturiko hauspo elastomeriko presurizatu batez osatua, kautxu-motako larrialdimalguki batean ezartzen dena, hodi edo zulo baten bidez andala batera konektatzen dena. Doktorego tesi honek, maiztasun altuagoetan eta lan-norabide desberdinetan esekidura sekundarioaren egungo ereduen bideragarritasuna ikertzen du. Maiztasun-tartea 200 Hz-raino handitu behar denerako (egiturak transmititutako bibrazioen transmisio-maiztasuna) edo ez-linealtasunak gehitu behar direnerako eredu berriak proposatzen dira. Lehenik, hauspo motako esekidura pneumatikoak modelizatzeko dauden teknikak aplikagarri diren maiztasun-tartearen, elementu-kopuruaren (hauspoa, sistema pneumatikoa, esekidura sistema osoa) eta azal ditzaketen ez-linealtasunen arabera ebaluatu dira. FEM ereduak norabide zein fisika ezberdinetarako, ez-linealtasunak barneratzeko eta maiztasun altuko maiztasun tartea definitzeko modelizazio - teknikarik egokiena dirudite. Azken finean, esekidura-sistema hainbat elementuk osatzen dute; zuntzez irmoturiko kautxu motako hauspo konposatu batek, kautxuzko larrialdi-malguki batek eta sistema pneumatikoaren barruan mugitzen ari den airemasa batek, bereziki. Ondorioa, esekidura-elementu ez-lineal konplexu bat izatea da. Lan honetan, kautxu-erako elementuen portaera ez-lineala (konprimaezintasuna, elastikotasun ez-lineala, eta kitzikatze maiztasunaren eta anplitudearen mendekotasunak) FEM ereduetan nola inplementatu jorratu da, beharrezko saiakuntzak eginez eta ereduaen kalibrazio burutuz. Bigarrenik, hauspoaren, sistema pneumatikoaren eta esekidura sekundario osoaren berezitasunak zatika ikertu dira. Hauspoari dagokionez, ABAQUSen garatutako eta saiakuntzen datuekin baliozkotutako hauspoaren FEM eredu bat proposatu da. Ereduak errefortzu uniaxialak, barne-presioaren eta deformazio-estrukturalaren arteko akoplamendua, eta barneko airearen eta ingurunearen arteko bero-truke politropikoaren definizioa biltzen ditu. Hortaz gain, diseinu-erraminta gixa zazpi eraikuntza-parametroren funtzio diren zurruntasun estatiko axial eta zeharkakoa eta lehen maiztasun axial eta zeharkakoen lau erantzun-azalera funtzio ondorioztatu dira. Esekidura-sistemak 200 Hz-tik beherako bibrazio-moduak erakusten ditu, bibrazioen transmisio estrukturala gertatzen den maiztasun-tartean zehazki. Ondoren, lobulu bakarreko hauspo bat hodi bidez andalari konektatuz, 400 Hz bitarte esekidura pneumatikoaren zurruntasun axiala ikertu da. Saiakuntza kanpaina sakon baten ostean, FEM eredu aurreratu bat garatu da, hauspoaren eta andalaren arteko aire-fluxuaren ondoriozko erresonantziak, hodian emanan diren uhin geldikorren ondoriozko erresonantziak eta hauspoen egiturazko dinamikaren ondoriozko erresonantziak biltzen dituena, zehazki. Orain arte eskuragarri dauden modelizazio-teknikek ez dute bolumen gehigarriak (andalak eta hodiak) 20 Hz-tik gora duen eragina barne hartzen. Hala ere, ikerketa honek neurri txikiagoan bada ere, esekidura-sistemaren portaera dinamikoa aldatzen dutela agerian utzi du. Gainera, hauspoaren egitura-erresonantziek 20 Hz-tik gorako isolamendua arriskuan jar dezakete. Azkenik, sistema pnaumatikoari larrialdi malgukia gehituz, esekidura sekundario osoaren FEM eredu multifisiko ez-lineal bat garatu da. FEM ereduaren emaitza estatikoak eta 20 Hz bitarteko dinamikoak eskuragarri dauden saiakuntza datuen bidez balioztatu dira, eta ondoren, eredua 300 Hz-raino zabaldu da. Mugimendu axial puru, zeharkako nahiz biraketa mugimenduen aurream esekidura-sistemaren portaera dinamikoa ebaluatu da. Hiru norabideetan, ereduak 200 Hz-tik beherako erresonantzia-maiztasunak aurreikusten ditu, isolamendua arriskuan jar lezaketenak. Aplikazio gisa, FEM eredua oinarri hartuta eta saiakuntzak ekidinez, gorputzanitzeko simulazioetan erabili ohi diren esekidura sekundarioaren ereduen sarrera balioak ondorioztatu dira.
