Design of helical winding for slotless partially superconducting electric machines for aircraft propulsion

    No full text
This paper presents a promising winding technique which enables higher power-densities in partially superconducting electrical machines with a slotless stator, e.g., self-supporting windings. Firstly, the formulation for defining the skewing factor of the helical winding is given. Afterwards, the skew angle and how diverse winding configurations can be characterised as a function of this angle is explained, along with different parameters such as the skewing factor, the harmonic content of the magnetomotive force wave in the airgap or the resistance per phase of the winding. The sine-shaped winding, a particular case of helical winding, is shown, with which, thanks to the benefits of the additive manufacturing, a better electromagnetic performance is achieved. Finally, the implementation of the helical winding configuration in a slotless partially superconducting 2MW high-power and high-voltage electric machine for electric aircraft propulsion is assessed, comparing the machine active part weight and their power density

    No full text

Design and testing of steel additive-manufactured moment-resistant beam-to-column connection

The objective of this research is to study an alternative to conventional moment-resisting beam-to-column steel joints through the design of optimised connections made by additive manufacturing using steel. The proposed design is intended to fulfil design criteria such as the following: the connection has to be moment-resistant, and the different structural elements should join as easily as possible, enabling them to be attached and detached and consequently allowing the reuse of steel. The design is achieved by the application of Structural Topological Optimisation tools from the software TOSCA, and it is verified by finite element analysis using ABAQUS. The proposed design reshapes the material and leads to a uniform and optimised distribution of stresses. Blind bolts are no longer necessary and a significant weight reduction is achieved. The final design was printed with S316 stainless steel using the Selective Laser Melting technique, and it was tested under proportional loads until failure. The finite element models were validated with the experimental results. Then, the behaviour of the proposed connection under proportional and non-proportional loads is compared with that of a connection executed by traditional means (welded and bolted plates), as well as a conventional fully welded connection. The proposed connection exhibits a better behaviour than the other connections in terms of stiffness and resistance. In fact, when compared with the conventional welded connection, the values of the stiffness and strength of the optimised design are much higher. In addition, the significantly larger values of the stiffness/weight and strength/weight ratios highlight the efficiency of the proposed design

Evolutionary Explanations of Pain and Suffering: A ‘Gift to Theology’ or a Challenge

Evolutionary studies have provided several explanations about how pain and suffering can be fitted into that framework, which tries to make sense of every biological and human feature in terms of evolution, survival, and fitness. These explanations point usually to how such apparently negative aspects become useful and contribute to an evolution that after all has delivered good outcomes. Such an approach might eventually render the theodicy question less sharp and critical for believers who are trying to cope with the scandal of so great suffering in our world and history. Theologically we can welcome such new insights, less noticed in former tradition, but at the same time we need to be cautious before a development which could render less clear the message of Christian salvation. In any case, the new data and knowledge clearly invite to revise and reformulate the Christian salvific message, to better answer before the mystery of evil and suffering

Combating repeated lies: The impact of fact‐checking on persistent falsehoods by politicians

    No full text
The rise of repeated false claims within political discourse is undermining fact‐checking efforts. By reiterating similar statements that perpetuate previous falsehoods, political actors shift from misinformation to deliberate disinformation and even propagandistic tactics. Through an analysis of 1,204 political fact‐checks conducted by the Spanish fact‐checking organization Newtral, this study quantifies and characterizes the prevalence of repeated false claims in political discourse, revealing that a substantial 24.8% of false statements are repeated, with each being repeated an average of four times. By delving into the nature and types of claims most susceptible to recurrence, the study identifies five primary patterns employed by political actors: nuanced variations, data manipulation, multilateral attacks, discourse qualification, and cumulative repetition. These tactics blur the lines between deception and self‐correction. The annotated database of these repeated false statements can serve as a valuable resource for exploratory qualitative analysis as well as claim‐matching research in automated fact‐checking

The ELECLA trial: A multicentre randomised control trial on outcomes of neoadjuvant treatment on locally advanced colon cancer

    No full text
Background: Colon cancer (CC) is a public health concern with increasing incidence in younger populations. Treatment for locally advanced CC (LACC) involves oncological surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy (AC) to reduce recurrence and improve overall survival (OS). Neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) is a novel approach for the treatment of LACC, and research is underway to explore its potential benefit in terms of survival. This trial will assess the efficacy of NAC in LACC. Methods: This is a multicentre randomised, parallel-group, open label controlled clinical trial. Participants will be selected based on homogenous inclusion criteria and randomly assigned to two treatment groups: NAC, surgery, and AC or surgery followed by AC. The primary aim of this study is to evaluate the 2-year progression-free survival (PFS), with secondary outcomes including 5-year PFS, 2- and 5-year OS, toxicity, radiological and pathological response, morbidity, and mortality. Discussion: The results of this study will determine whether NAC induces a clinical and histological tumour response in patients with CCLA and if this treatment sequence improves survival without increasing morbidity and mortality
