Carob pod powder, an excellent source of health-promoting substances, has found its use in a wide range of food products. Grinding conditions affect the physical and chemical properties of the powder, but their influence on the bioaccessibility of phenolic compounds in carob pod powder has not yet been determined. The carob pods were ground for 30-180 s in a vibratory grinder. The median values (D-50) of particle size decreased after 60 s of grinding (87.9 mu m), then increased to 135.1 mu m. Lightness showed a negative correlation with D-50 and a(w), while the values of redness and yellowness decreased with the reduction in particle size and water activity. The smaller the value of D-50, the higher the equilibrium moisture content of carob powder. Phenolic acids (vanillic, ferulic, cinnamic) and flavonoids (luteolin, naringenin, apigenin) were found in all samples of carob powder. The grinding time influenced their content in carob powder, with maximum values at 180 s. Similar observations were made when assessing antioxidant capacity. The in vitro digestion process only improved the bioaccessibility of catechin content in all samples. However, the bioaccessibility of the phenolic compounds and the total phenolic and flavonoid contents decreased with the increase in grinding time. Our findings revealed that the grinding of carob pods for 180 s improved the extractability of phenolics; however, their bioaccessibility was reduced. It is sufficient to ground the carob pod for 30 s, ensuring good availability of nutraceuticals and lower energy cost for grinding.Univerzita Pardubice, UPA: SGS-2022-002University of Pardubice [SGS-2022-002

Laparoscopic repair modality of perforated peptic ulcer: Less is more?

    Get PDF
Perforation, per se, presents the most serious complication of peptic ulcer disease with a mortality rate that cannot be underestimated. Surgery is the only treatment option, which can be performed laparoscopically or via conventional laparotomy. The present study aimed to compare the short-term outcomes of laparoscopy and laparotomy techniques in the surgical treatment of peptic ulcer perforation. A retrospective study design was structured to compare the perioperative and short-term postoperative outcomes of 102 patients who had undergone laparoscopic and conventional repair of the perforated peptic ulcer over a six-year interval (January 1, 2016, to December 31, 2021). Of these, 44 (43.1%) had undergone laparoscopic repair while 58 (56.9%) had surgical repair via conventional laparotomy. The operative time and length of hospital stay were comparable in both subgroups (p=0.984 and p =0.585). Nevertheless, 30-day postoperative morbidity was significantly higher in the open surgery subgroup (75.9% vs. 59.1%, p= 0.032). The risk of relaparotomy was similar in both study subgroups; however, suture dehiscence as a reason for surgical revision was significantly more frequent in the laparoscopic subgroup (13.6% vs 3.4%). Of note, the mortality rate in the laparoscopic group of patients was 13.6%, and in the laparotomy group 41.4%. The laparoscopic approach to peptic ulcer perforation is the procedure of choice for low-risk patients. Conventional surgery seems to be associated with a significantly higher incidence of severe postoperative complications and mortality. However, the higher mortality in these patients is probably related to their worse initial clinical condition

ICIP 2022 Challenge: PEDCMI, TOOD enhanced by slicing-aided fine-tuning and inference

    No full text
This paper describes the approach for the Parasitic Egg Detection and Classification in Microscopic Images challenge. Our solution relies on a robust deep learning pipeline implementing a five-fold training schema to pursue the challenge goal. The final methodology utilizes the TOOD model, further enhanced by slicing-aided fine-tuning and inference. The slicing helps to overcome the image size invariability of the dataset and allows the model to access all images in high resolution, and consequently helps it learn detailed features needed to distinguish different classes and find a precise object position. Our results demonstrate the importance of proper data analysis and consequent pre and post-processing to improve prediction performance.CZ LM2018140; IGA/CebiaTech/2022/001; Ministerstvo Školství, Mládeže a Tělovýchovy, MŠMTInternal Grant Agency of Tomas Bata University [IGA/CebiaTech/2022/001]; project "e-Infrastruktura CZ" - Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic [e-INFRA CZ LM2018140

Whey protein isolate-chitosan PolyElectrolyte Nanoparticles as a drug delivery system

    Get PDF
Whey protein isolate (WPI), employed as a carrier for a wide range of bioactive substances, suffers from a lack of colloidal stability in physiological conditions. Herein, we developed innovative stabilized PolyElectrolyte Nanoparticles (PENs) obtained by two techniques: polyelectrolyte complexation of negatively charged WPI and positively charged chitosan (CS), and ionic gelation in the presence of polyanion tripolyphosphate (TPP). Therefore, the WPI-based core was coated with a CS-based shell and then stabilized by TPP at pH 8. The nanostructures were characterized by physiochemical methods, and their encapsulation efficiency and in vitro release were evaluated. The spherical NPs with an average size of 248.57 +/- 5.00 nm and surface charge of +10.80 +/- 0.43 mV demonstrated high encapsulation efficiency (92.79 +/- 0.69) and sustained release of a positively charged chemotherapeutic agent such as doxorubicin (DOX). Z-average size and size distribution also presented negligible increases in size and aggregates during the three weeks. The results obtained confirm the effectiveness of the simultaneous application of these methods to improve the colloidal stability of PEN.RP/CPS/2022/005; Ministerstvo Školství, Mládeže a Tělovýchovy, MŠMTMinistry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic-DKRVO [RP/CPS/2022/005

Carbonized leather waste: A review and conductivity outlook

    Get PDF
The carbonization of collagen-based leather waste to nitrogen-containing carbon is reviewed with respect to the preparation, characterization of carbonized products, and applications proposed in the literature. The resulting nitrogen-containing carbons with fibrous morphology have been used as adsorbents in water pollution treatment, in electrocatalysis, and especially in electrodes of energy-storage devices, such as supercapacitors and batteries. Although electrical conductivity has been implicitly exploited in many cases, the quantitative determination of this parameter has been addressed in the literature only marginally. In this report, attention has been newly paid to the determination of conductivity and its dependence on carbonization temperature. The resulting powders cannot be compressed into pellets for routine conductivity determination. A new method has been used to follow the resistivity of powders as a function of pressure up to 10 MPa. The conductivity at this pressure increased from 9.4 × 10−8 S cm−1 for carbonization at 500 °C to 5.3 S cm−1 at 1000 °C. The conductivity of the last sample was comparable with conducting polymers such as polypyrrole. The carbonized leather thus has the potential to be used in applications requiring electrical conduction.Ministerstvo Školství, Mládeže a Tělovýchovy, MŠMT: INTER-EXCELLENCE LTT20005, RO70200003025/2102Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sports of the Czech Republic [INTER-EXCELLENCE LTT20005, RO70200003025/2102

    Get PDF
OBJECTIVE: Peptic ulcer perforation presents the most serious complication of ulcer disease with mortality that varies significantly depending on the age and conditions. The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic was effective worldwide in 2020 and continues to date. The aim of this study was to investigate the initial clinical parameters and short-term outcomes of patients with acute peptic ulcer perforation before and during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted in the Department of Surgery, University Hospital Ostrava, Czech Republic. The patients undergoing surgical modality of a simple suture of peptic ulcer perforation with/without omentoplasty in the post-coronavirus disease 2019 (January 1, 2020 to December 31, 2021) and the pre-coronavirus disease 2019 (January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2019) had been incorporated in this study. RESULTS: This study included a total of 46 cases (26 in the pre-coronavirus disease 2019, 20 in the post-coronavirus disease 2019). The age, body mass index, Boey score, duration of symptoms, surgery time, and length of hospital stay were comparable in both study subgroups. During the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, patients were admitted with a statistically significantly lower degree of perioperative risk according to the American Society of Anesthesiologists classification (p=0.013). Notably, 30-day postoperative morbidity was significantly higher in pre-coronavirus disease 2019 (73.1 vs. 55.0%, p=0.038). The mortality rate in the laparoscopic group was 13.6%, in the laparotomy group 41.4%, and the mortality rate was higher in pre-coronavirus disease 2019 than in post-coronavirus disease 2019 (34.6 vs. 20.0%, p=0.166). CONCLUSION: In fact, the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic had not significantly influenced therapeutic management and short-term outcomes of patients undergoing acute surgical repair of peptic ulcer perforation

Phase change materials designed from Tetra Pak waste and paraffin wax as unique thermal energy storage systems

    Get PDF
Thermal energy storage systems (TES) based on shape-stabilized phase change materials (SSPCM) designed from recycled Tetra Pak (TP) waste, paraffin wax (PW), and expanded graphite (EG) were investigated in this study. This work represents the first study to explore TP waste composed of low-density polyethylene (LDPE)/ aluminum (Al) components for energy storage applications. The LDPE part serves as a matrix conserving a material in a compact, solid shape after PW melting; PW acts as an active phase change component contributing to heat absorption/release through a phase change (from a solid to a liquid state, and vice versa) of its crystalline phase. EG serves as a filler that enhances the thermal conductivity and mechanical properties of materials. The focus was put on the optimization of the composition of SSPCM including PW, and EG, to check thermal, mechanical, and rheological properties which influence the future processability of such systems through extrusion, as well as to investigate the synergic effect of graphite and residual Al component on thermal con-ductivity and leakage of PW. There are two main demands on polymer/PW blends, namely well-separated melting peaks for both components at significantly different temperatures, and good compatibility between polymer and PW.The best performance of SSPCM investigated in this study was found for a mixture having the composition TP/ PW/EG = 50/40/10 w/w/w. This mixture shows well-balanced properties, including appropriate heat storage and release parameters, thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, toughness and strength, and low leakage of PW from the material. This system can store 116.2 J/g of heat energy and release 93.8 J/g of heat energy. The determination of the heat energy storage and release was performed by the transient guarded hot plate tech-nique. Tensile testing revealed that Young's modulus of the TP/PW/EG = 50/40/10 w/w/w composition was 924 +/- 71 MPa and the stress at break was 8.2 +/- 1.2 MPa, which are sufficient values from the applicability point of view. The composition stability of the prepared system was confirmed by rotational rheometry. The envi-ronmental relevance of these materials lies in the utilization of the waste, which has minimal usage, and after the hydropulping of Tetra Pak packaging, it accumulates in large volumes. This is the first study indicating that LDPE/Al recyclate is a cheap alternative for preparing TES materials, fulfilling all the requirements for such materials. This study indicates the potential of TP waste for the preparation of SSPCM using PW as a phase change component. The selection of PW with a specific melting point determines potential applications, including the building industry, thermal management of electronics, solar vapor generators for desalination, solar water heaters, battery/computer heat protection, etc.RP/CPS/2022/003; Qatar National Research Fund, QNRF; Ministerstvo Školství, Mládeže a Tělovýchovy, MŠMT; Agentúra na Podporu Výskumu a Vývoja, APVV: APVV-19-0338Qatar National Research Fund (The Qatar Foundation) [NPRP13S-0127-200177]; Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sports of the Czech Republic-DKRVO [RP/CPS/2022/003]; Slovak Research and Development Agency [APVV-19-0338
