Cats can be dangerous to your relationships: Cats in the fiction of Jim Grimsley
In the context of culture’s fascination with cats, the present article analyzes the use of felines in two pieces of fiction by the southern writer Jim Grimsley: the short story “The Cathouse Lovers” (1976) and his novel Comfort & Joy (1993 in German, 1999 in English). The two texts differ greatly in terms of the genre, period, as well as the role of cats in the story, yet both of them include the motif of cats that have a negative effect on the romantic and sexual relationships of their human protagonists
Effects of digital orientation on organizational resilience: a dynamic capabilities perspective
Purpose: This study aims to investigate the impact of digital orientation (DO) on organizational resilience (OR) and explore the contingency effects of human resource slack and nature of enterprise ownership. Design/methodology/approach: The model hypotheses were tested using fixed effects regression on panel data collected from Chinese A-share listed manufacturing firms spanning from 2007 to 2020.
Findings: DO has a positive effect on OR. Human resource slack positively moderates the relationship between DO and OR. Additionally, DO enhances OR more effectively in non-state-owned firms than in state-owned firms.
Research limitations/implications: This study relies on data from a single industry from a single country. Practical implications: The study supports that firms facing uncertainty, risk and pressure should promptly develop their DO strategy. Firms can derive greater resilience from implementing a DO strategy when they have a high-level human resource pool. State-owned enterprises will benefit from a DO strategy if they make some adaptive changes in leadership, structure, culture and mindset aspects.
Originality/value: This study is the first to examine the relationship between DO and OR, contributing to the existing literature on digital transformation and organizational resilience. It offers valuable insights for practitioners and policymakers seeking to adapt their organizations for the digital era and foster predictive, defensive and growth responses strategies in a dynamic business environment.National Natural Science Foundation of China, NSFC, (72172107

The aim of the paper is to define and compare the significant attributes in the field of business ethics according to the size of the firm, gender and education of entrepreneurs in the SME segment in sum in the V4 countries. The empirical research, which was aimed at identifying the attitudes of small and medium-sized firms, was conducted in June 2022 in the Visegrad Four countries (Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland and Hungary). The data collection was carried out by the external firm. Statistical hypotheses were tested through descriptive statistics, chi-square and Z-score at α = 5% significance level. The attitudes of SMEs towards the following statements were examined: ST1: I consider ethics in business important; ST2: I consider the ethical implications of my decisions when managing my business; ST3: I feel good when I behave ethically in business; and ST4: Our company enforces rules of ethical conduct in business. We find that the level of agreement with these statements is high. We did not find statistically significant differences in responses based on defined demographic characteristics
Luxury ecotourism: The benefits of using social media platforms
Tourism is one of the biggest industries that has ever growth in the past few decades. Within the industry, ecotourism stands out to be a new norm of tourism, where tourists visit the wildlife, and nature habitat without damaging the environment and being within the area. Therefore, ecotourism become popular and well-known within the industry and with tourists around the world. However, the concept of luxury ecotourism is still new to many people. The idea of luxury ecotourism is to give the consumer the satisfaction of visiting wildlife, communities, and space, where remaining the luxury of the trip. The approach is applying ethical to luxury tourism, making the customer feel comfortable about not damaging the area they visit. The idea is fascinating but the popularity of this still needs work. That is where the benefit of technology comes in. The paper is focusing on the factor that can help spread luxury ecotourism to more customers, and in this case, is social media. Social media uphold the wide range and spreading speed that no other platform has, which might be beneficial to promote any kind of product or service. The paper is using secondary data from past research and paper, to form an idea of how social media can benefit the growth of luxury ecotourism.Tomas Bata University in Zlín, TBU; Finance Authority of Maine, FAME; Univerzita Tomáše Bati ve Zlíně, UT
Self-reported health of university students in Slovakia during the end phase of the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on the quality of life
In the paper, we focused on the self-reported health of university students and its relationship to the quality of their life. Self-reported health is part of the growing interest in non-medical understanding of health. Two objectives and three research hypotheses are established. The first goal is to find out what the self-reported health of university students in Slovakia is during the period in the end of the COVID-19 pandemic. Before starting the measurement, the following research hypotheses were formulated: H1: Respondents will evaluate health on a scale of 0-10 with values of 8 and higher and H2: Differences in self-reported health evaluation of male and female students will be low. The second goal is to determine the impact of self-reported health on students’ quality of life and which of the proposed variables are predictors of self-reported health. In connection with the second goal, the third research hypothesis H3 is formulated: The impact of self-reported health on the quality of life of students measured by the correlation coefficient reaches a value of 0.30 – 0.69, i.e. mean value. Self-reported health, quality of life and other variables are measured on a scale of 0-10. The Shapiro-Wilk test and the non-parametric Wilcoxon one-sample test are used in the measurements. The result is knowledge of high values of self-reported health of men and women, hypothesis H1 was fulfilled. The correlation between health and quality of life is higher than 0.3, self-reported health of men and women is a predictor of their quality of life. Hypothesis H3 was fulfilled.Slovenská Akadémia Vied, SAV; Ministerstvo školstva, vedy, výskumu a športu Slovenskej republiky; Vedecká Grantová Agentúra MŠVVaŠ SR a SAV, VEGA, (1/0706/20
The dynamic model of the real integrating process with variable coefficients
This paper brings the description and the evaluation of using the polynomial and interpolation-based approximation methods, to optimize a model of a real integrating process with the system coefficients depending on the state of the process input. The contribution contains a basic description of the investigated system together with the description of the used methods and algorithms. The simulation results are displayed on simple charts, the evaluation criteria are explained, and the obtained results for both mentioned approaches are discussed and evaluated. The outputs of this contribution can be used for further analysis of the process by simulation means or for the next step - optimization of a suitable controller for the investigated system
The use of biometric technologies to Increase security at sporting events
The topic of the article is consideration of the possibility of using biometric technologies to increase security during sports events. Security will always be among the most discussed topics, and biometric technologies are one of its modern elements. Currently, sporting events and spectator violence occurring at them are a much-discussed topics. Moreover, as a motive, violence between individual population groups is growing throughout Europe. The number of academic publications dealing with spectator violence is high, but most research in this area is dedicated to describing individual aspects of hooliganism and its causes. Unfortunately, less attention is paid to security measures that could be applied in the specific environment of sports venues. In addition, some sports clubs themselves are resisting the introduction of tougher security measures. They are looking for a possible outflow of participants. However, the experience of organizations that have not been afraid of this confirms that the opposite is true. After the outflow of dangerous fans, there was an increase in the participation of whole families, who no longer had such concerns for their safety. Therefore, the article will first provide an overview of the types of spectator violence and its history to orientate in the issue, and will further focus on the description of individual suitable biometric technologies and their use. It includes an overview of the technologies and experiences of sports clubs that have already included these elements in their preventive activities. In the end, a comparison of the success of selected technologies and recommendations for criteria for their selection and subsequent implementation will be presented.Institute of Safety Engineering; Tomas Bata University in Zlín, TBU, (IGA / FAI / 2023/004); Univerzita Tomáše Bati ve Zlíně, UT
A numerical study of multiphase flow boiling heat transfer of nanofluids in the horizontal metal foam tubes
The study aims to numerically investigate the flow boiling of Al2O3/H2O and CuO/H2O nanofluids and water in pipes filled with copper metal foams. Four different values of porosity and three values of pore density have been used. To perform numerical simulation, the mixture model has been developed. For the first time, the effects of nanoparticle deposition on the wettability of heating surfaces were considered with the help of user-defined functions. Besides, the effect of metal foams with different porosities on the onset of nucleate boiling was evaluated. The thermal performance of metal foam pipes has been compared with each other by comparing the increase in heat transfer and pressure drop. As a result, by reducing the porosity from 0.95 to 0.80, the heat transfer coefficient was increased by 59 %, while the pressure drop increased by 28 %. Finally, by comparing the increase in heat transfer and pressure drop, results show that the metal foam pipe with 80 % porosity and 5 pores per inch has the best thermal performance. The results of this study are expected to be used for the optimization of advanced phase change cooling technologies.Ministry of Science and ICT of the Republic of Korea; University of Garmian, Kurdistan; National Natural Science Foundation of China, NSFC, (52076013); Ministry of Science and Technology of the People's Republic of China, MOST; National Research Foundation of Korea, NRF; Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission, Adminitrative Commission of Zhongguancun Science Park, (3212024

Assessing the impact of fiscal policy and natural resources on environmental degradation in BRICS countries: A resource management perspective
This study examines the effects of fiscal policy, human capital, natural resources, and energy productivity on the load capacity factor (LCF) in BRICS countries between 1990 and 2018 in order to meet the COP27 goal of promoting environmental sustainability. The dynamic common correlated effects mean group (CCEMG) estimator revealed the long-term effect, showing that fiscal policy, energy production, and human capital contribute to the LCF, but natural resources mitigate the LCF. On the flip side, the results of the panel causality test show that LCF may be predicted by energy productivity and human capital. The causality results reveal that LCF can forecast fiscal and natural resource policies. On the basis of the findings, significant policy suggestions are provided, including the public investment that may be directed towards the development of green industrial methods and the revision of the policies connected to exploring these natural resources, particularly fossil fuels.Provincial Social Science Foundation of Henan, (2022BFX018); Fundamental Research Funds for the Central Universities, (23JNLH04)Annual Planning Projects of Provincial Social Science Foundation of Henan [2022BFX018]; Fundamental Research Funds for the Central Universities [23JNLH04
