Degradation of antibacterial 1-octylpyrrolidin-2-one by bacterial pairs isolated from river water and soil

    Get PDF
The study of bacterial degradation of 1-octylpyrrolidin-2-one (NOP) by river water and soil bacteria was the main aim of the research. Although the compound demonstrated bacteriostatic as well as bactericidal effects against Gram-positive and certain Gram-negative bacteria at concentrations ranging from 100 to 1000 mg L-1, its concentration of 100 mg L-1 was successfully degraded by microbial communities of both river water and alluvial soil; removal efficiencies reached 87.2 and 88.4% of dissolved organic carbon, respectively. Isolation of the strains responsible for the process showed that bacterial degradation was initiated by the octane-utilising bacteria of the genus Phenylobacterium, which used four carbon atoms of the NOP octyl chain and oxidised terminal carbon atom of the remaining chain. The structure of the intermediate produced by phenylobacteria was elucidated following the results obtained from the detailed electrospray mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) analysis; these experiments showed that it is a 4-(2-oxopyrrolidin-1-yl)butanoic acid. This intermediate was further degraded by other bacterial members of appropriate microbial communities, namely Bordetella petrii and Arthrobacter sp. Further tests proved that these bacteria were able to assimilate the nitrogen atom of the lactam ring and thus complete the degradation process.IGA/FT/2018/009, IGA/FT/2019/011Internal Grant Agency of Tomas Bata University in Zlin [IGA/FT/2018/009, IGA/FT/2019/011

Rheological characteristics of model gluten-free dough with plantago seeds and husk incorporation

    Get PDF
The seeds and husk of Plantago origin are rich source of dietary fiber known for its medicinal use. Despite the use of both Plantago psyllium and Plantago ovata products due to their physicochemical and nutritional properties, only the effects of Plantago ovata husk have been studied. Their structure-forming properties may positively affect gluten-free bread quality only if an adequate dough hydration is used. The aim of the work is to analyze the effect of different Plantago products: Plantago psyllium seeds and Plantago ovata seeds and husk in quantities of 3, 6 and 9% share on the rheological profile of model gluten-free dough and bread and bread's technological quality and shelf-life. The rheological parameters of the dough were determined with Mixolab protocols and uniaxial deformation test. Bread quality and its textural profile analysis after cooling and storage were determined. The addition of Plantago psyllium seeds weakened the dough. All additives contributed to a reduction in starch retrogradation, bread hardness and water loss during baking, and to the improvement of the doughs' resistance to extension, dough energy and bread yield. This influence is strongest when the Plantago ovata husk was used. However, the consumer acceptance of the tested breads was low and, in this respect, the breads with the addition of seeds of both Plantago psyllium and ovata were considered to be better than the husk.Polish National Agency for Academic ExchangePolish National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA) [PPN/BIL/2018/1/3/CZE/UMOWA/1]; Wroclaw University of Environmental and Life Science

On modifications towards improvement of the exploitation phase for SOMA algorithm with clustering-aided migration and adaptive perturbation vector control

    Get PDF
This paper represents the next step in the development of the recently proposed single objective metaheuristic algorithm - Self-Organizing Migrating Algorithm with CLustering-aided migration and adaptive Perturbation vector control (SOMA-CLP). The CEC 2021 single objective bound-constrained optimization benchmark testbed was used for the performance evaluation of the modifications of the algorithm. The presented modifications were invoked by the results of CEC 2021 competition, where the SOMA-CLP ranked 7th out of 9 competing algorithms. This paper introduces three modifications of population organization process focusing on one particular phase of the SOMA-CLP algorithm aimed at exploitation. All results were compared and tested for statistical significance against the original variant using the Friedman rank test. The algorithm modification and analysis of the results presented here can be inspiring for other researchers working on the development and modifications of evolutionary computing techniques. © 2021 IEEE.IGA/CebiaTech/2021/001Internal Grant Agency of Tomas Bata University [IGA/CebiaTech/2021/001

A study on the applicability of thermodynamic sensors in fermentation processes in selected foods

    Get PDF
This study focuses on the use of thermodynamic sensors (TDS) in baking, brewing, and yogurt production at home. Using thermodynamic sensors, a change in the temperature flow between the two sensor elements during fermentation was observed for the final mixture (complete recipe for pizza dough production), showing the possibility of distinguishing some phases of the fermentation process. Even during the fermentation process in the preparation of wort and yogurt with non-traditional additives, the sensors were able to indicate significant parts of the process, including the end of the process. The research article also mentions as a new idea the use of trivial regulation at home in food production to determine the course of the fermentation process. The results presented in this article show the possibility of using TDS for more accurate characterization and adjustment of the production process of selected foods in the basic phase, which will be further applicable in the food industry, with the potential to reduce the cost of food production processes that involve a fermentation process. © 2022 by the authors. Predictors of financial advice: An evidence from a developing nation

    Get PDF
The financial markets and products become increasingly complicated day by day, and the current pandemic is adding fuel to the fire, causing volatilities in the financial markets around the globe and a tough time to the individuals. To make better financial decisions, one needs sufficient level of financial literacy, but past studies revealed that most countries have below-average financial literacy, and it takes a long time to improve it. So, in such a scenario, financial advice is a quick way for individuals to make a better financial decision. It can be an easy and quick substitute for financial literacy in the short run. Therefore, considering the usefulness of financial advice, this paper investigates the direct effect of demographic (gender and education), financial anxiety, financial capability, financial satisfaction, and online fransaction use on financial advice. The main objective of the paper is to understand the determinants of financial advice. The study is conducted in the northern part of India, collecting data through a self-reporting scale from individuals above 18. The paper applied hierarchical multiple regression with three steps in order to find the effects on financial advice. The findings indicate that financial advice is affected by financial anxiety, financial satisfaction, and online fransaction use. Gender and education failed to reflect a significant effect on financial advice. Hence, this paper strengthens the existing literature of financial advice through the integrated framework, considering how an individuals' financial anxiety, financial capability, financial satisfaction, and online transaction use (being a part of digital financial literacy) drive individuals' financial advice-seeking behaviour. The novelty of the paper is the integrated framework itself as the chosen variables combined on the individuals' financial advice are not explored yet.Internal Grant Agency of Faculty of Management and Economics, Tomas Bata University [IGA/FAME/2019/002

RheoTack - An approach to investigate retraction rate dependent detaching behavior of pressure sensitive adhesives

    Get PDF
Characterization methods of pressure sensitive adhesives (PSA) originate from technical bonding and do not cover relevant data for the development and quality assurance of medical applications, where PSA with flexible backing layers are adopted to human skin. In this study, a new method called RheoTack is developed to determine (mechanically and optically) an adhesion and detaching behavior of flexible and transparent PSA based patches. Transdermal therapeutic systems (TTS) consisting of silicone-based PSAs on a flexible and transparent backing layer were tested on a rotational rheometer with an 8 mm plate as a probe rod at retraction speeds of 0.01, 0.1, and 1 mm/s with respect to their adhesion and detaching behavior in terms of force-retraction displacement curves. The curves consist of a compression phase to affirm wetting; a tensile deformation phase intercepting stretching, cavity, and fibril formation; and a failure phase with detaching. Their analysis provides values for stiffness, force, and displacement of the beginning of fibril formation, force and displacement of the beginning of a failure due to fibril breakage and detaching, as well as corresponding activation energies. All these parameters exhibit the pronounced dependency on the retraction speed. The force-retraction displacement curves together with the simultaneous video recordings of the TTS deformation from three different angles (three cameras) provide deeper insight into the deformation processes and allow for interpreting the properties' characteristics for PSA applications. © 2022 Author(s).RP/CPS/2022/003; Ministerstvo Školství, Mládeže a Tělovýchovy, MŠMT; Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung, BMBF: 03FH039PX5German Ministry of Education and ResearchFederal Ministry of Education & Research (BMBF) [03FH039PX5]; Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic - DKRVO [RP/CPS/2022/003]; Graduate Institute Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Science

The value of integrated planning for production, inventory, and routing decisions: A systematic review and meta-analysis

    Get PDF
This paper presents a comparison of sequential and integrated planning for the production routing problem, in which production, inventory, and routing decisions must be made. The aim is to estimate the expected value of treating the problems as a whole, rather than making decisions sequentially. In particular, the following research questions are posed: What is the expected cost reduction when combining production, inventory, and routing in a single modeling framework, compared to solving the problems individually in a sequence? Under which circumstances is it most beneficial to tackle an integrated problem? In other words, the goal is to establish whether the solutions obtained by the integration are clearly better than approximate solutions obtained by a more simplified process, and if so, under which circumstances this difference is the most pronounced. To answer these research questions, a systematic review was performed, resulting in a set of 20 relevant articles that were analyzed in depth. For the first research question, computational results from 15 articles were obtained and analyzed through a meta-analysis. The analysis estimated an expected cost savings provided by integration of 11.08%, with a 95% confidence interval of [6.58%, 15.58%]. For the second research question, individual results obtained via sensitivity analyses in 20 relevant articles were summarized qualitatively, enabling insights into how the potential savings by integration is influenced by parameters such as the degrees of freedom, the cost, and the capacity.Grantová Agentura České Republiky, GA ČR; Norges Forskningsråd; Univerzita Tomáše Bati ve Zlíně: GA 20-00091YTomas Bata University in Zlin [FSR-S/2020/FAI/002]; Czech Science Foundation [GA 20-00091Y]; Norwegian Research Council under the project AXIO

Quality attributes of chitosan-coated cornelian cherry (Cornus mas l.) fruits under different storage temperatures

    Get PDF
Temperature is the dominant environmental stimulus that influences the postharvest quality, visual appearance, and nutritional content of fruits. Temperature hastens fruit ripening and senescence by the impact on respiration rate and the acceleration of metabolic reactions. This study was conducted to select the optimized temperature for preserving the quality-related traits and antioxidant potential of cornelian cherry fruits after harvest. The fruits were treated with 1% chitosan and then kept under 0, 5, 10, and 21◦C for 21 days. The results revealed that fruits kept under lower than room temperature (21◦C) better retained antioxidant capacity and had higher levels of phenolics, flavonoids, and anthocyanins and even higher antioxidant enzyme activity, hence attaining prolonged postharvest life. Considering the quantity attributes and the shelf life, the temperature of choice was 0◦C. Zero temperature was also the best to keep the antioxidant capacity of cornelian cherry fruits. Overall, the results showed that low temperature and chitosan pretreatment provide an efficient method for maintaining the nutritional quality and antioxidant capacity of cornelian cherry fruits during storage time. © 2021 by the authors. Financial advice, literacy, inclusion and risk tolerance: The moderating effect of uncertainty avoidance

    Get PDF
The aim of this paper is to investigate the determinants of financial advice with a special focus on the cultural role in the influence of risk tolerance on seeking advice for financial issues. Financial literacy is covered by financial attitude, behaviour and knowledge. Financial inclusion is the other factor considered in the conceptual framework, as an indicator which can enhance both financial behaviour and financial advice. The research is based on primary data collected in two European nations, manifesting differences in culture, which gives the possibility to test the uncertainty avoidance role in the above relationship. This particular focus is the novelty of this work, as it sheds light on the importance of culture while designing policies with the aim to enhance individuals' financial literacy and advice. The hypotheses are tested by using Partial Least SquareStructural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) method. It was found that financial behaviour improves as financial inclusion gets better, along with financial attitude and knowledge. Furthermore, financial advice is positively influenced by financial inclusion and risk tolerance and partly by financial literacy. Additionally, findings demonstrate that culture does matter in explaining differences between countries. Culture in this paper is represented by uncertainty avoidance, as one of the Hofstede's culture dimension. Individuals from countries that manifest a very high preference for avoiding uncertainty reflect a negative relationship between risk tolerance and financial advice. The paper offers useful insights for policymakers and industry leaders in understanding the most influential factors on financial advice. This enables them to scheme policies and services aimed at equipping citizens with knowledge and skills to make the best use of their financial resources
