De tekortschietende Nederlandse conceptwet implementatie anti-SLAPP-richtlijn:Aanbevelingen om te voorkomen dat de richtlijn een papieren tijger wordt
Strategische rechtszaken tegen publieke participatie (SLAPP’s) vormen wereldwijd een ernstige bedreiging voor het recht op vrijheid van meningsuiting en het recht op informatie. Ter bescherming van SLAPPdoelwitten is in de EU de anti-SLAPP-richtlijn aangenomen. Deze richtlijn bevat minimumnormen voor nationale procedurele waarborgen in grensoverschrijdende burgerlijke zaken, die uiterlijk op 7 mei 2026 door de EU-lidstaten, met uitzondering van Denemarken, moeten worden geïmplementeerd. In deze bijdrage wordt betoogd dat het Nederlandse wetsvoorstel ter implementatie van de anti-SLAPP-richtlijn tekortschiet, waardoor geen effectieve bescherming voor SLAPP-doelwitten wordt geboden. Daarnaast worden aanbevelingen gedaan voor een effectieve en brede anti-SLAPP-bescherming in Nederland
Hybrid human-AI coaching: experiences of coaches and agents in a customer service environment
Most studies on AI coaching focus on AI as an independent system. Instead, this study examines the implementation of hybrid AI-supported coaching, where an AI-tool supports but does not replace the human coach. We evaluate how coaches and workers experience the implementation of AI-supported coaching, and what factors shape trust and perceived effectiveness. We use an inductive thematic analysis of qualitative interviews with both coaches and workers one month and five months after implementation of the AI-tool. The evaluation focuses on four themes: Two themes refer to the coaches: AI integration and Coaching effectiveness; and two themes refer to the agents: Trust dynamics and Feedback-driven growth. Our findings reveal an initial phase of resistance, linked to concerns about surveillance, followed by growing trust and perceived value due to the tool’s ability to generate feedback that was perceived as more objective, consistent, and more relevant than the traditional subjective feedback of coaches. Although adoption required additional effort, the tool enabled more targeted preparation, precise feedback, and measurable learning outcomes. Transparent use and the active involvement of coaches who build their coaching on the AI-generated data further supported this transition. Trust in the AI-supported coaching was built through ongoing human engagement
ESTRO recommendations on preoperative radiation therapy in breast cancer:current and future perspectives-Endorsed by ASTRO
Background and purpose: Preoperative radiation therapy (RT) for breast cancer is not a novel concept, though available data are insufficient to translate current knowledge into clinical practice. Nonetheless, potential advantages of this approach are emerging in multiple scenarios, incorporating increasing treatment personalization and technological improvements in RT. This paper aims to synthesize and summarize the literature on preoperative RT in distinct breast cancer treatment settings, providing perspectives based on existing evidence and gaps in knowledge. Methods: The ESTRO Breast subgroup proposal for elaborating perspectives on preoperative RT was approved by the ESTRO Guidelines Committee, and a panel of experts in the field was identified. Four working groups were created, focusing on the different clinical settings where preoperative RT has been investigated: patients with early-stage breast cancer at low risk of recurrence, patients with breast cancer at high risk of recurrence, and patients with an indication for mastectomy. The fourth group focused its search on cross cutting themes, such as preclinical and translational aspects, radiobiology, RT techniques and quality assurance. After a literature search including the identification of key points and gaps in the literature, the four working groups presented their findings and perspectives were formulated, discussed and approved by the panel. Results: Overall, 27 phase I and phase II studies enrolling patients from the year 2000 onward were considered, collecting data such as RT dose and fractionation, clinical outcomes, and complications rates. The expert panel stated perspectives for the different clinical scenarios based on available evidence and current gaps in knowledge, to be addressed by future clinical research. Conclusion: Given the current lack of clinical data to support the development of formal guidelines, we present our perspectives, which can be useful for implementing new clinical trials and research projects, overcoming current limitations, and potentially generating high-quality practice-changing data, introducing preoperative RT in specific breast cancer treatment settings in the future

Why education matters: On the interplay of three different mechanisms
In this contribution we give an overview of the three main theories on the role of education: education as a source of productive skills, education as a positional good and education as a means of social closure. Since the latter is driven by artificial scarcity, we discern some newer forms of social closure, namely through information asymmetry and positional productivity. We identify the underlying assumptions and driving mechanisms for each of the three theories and provide an empirical evaluation. We will argue that elements of all three theories may co-exist and that it is important to identify the conditions under which one or the other mechanism becomes more dominant. To help understand how the three theories are connected, we develop a unifying analytical model that organizes the different mechanisms

Initially used for fermentation or storage, oak wood barrels were found to enhance the organoleptic properties of spirits. Over time, wood compounds have been linked to the quality of the spirits. ToF-SIMS being an ionization technique that produces intense fragmentation patterns which are not fully understood, reference spectra are required to confidently analyze wood samples. Here, positive polarity ToF-SIMS reference spectra of important oak wood compounds being involved in spirit maturation, using a Bi3+ primary ion species, are presented

Cultural Diversity in Academic Motivation: Universality and Model Complexity
This contribution centres on two interconnected conjectures. The first posits that motivational—and the way we model what influences motivation— can be significantly enhanced by integrating the concept of growth orientation. This integration enables to connect growth mindset frameworks and motivational theories through straightforward antecedent-consequence models. The second conjecture is that simpler models tend to vary less and are more stable across different groups compared to more complex models. An example brings these two conjectures together by analysing cultural differences in academic motivation. It compares three models using data from international students studying mathematics and statistics: (1) a comprehensive growth orientation model incorporating both global and specific factors, estimated using Bifactor Exploratory Structural Equation Modelling (B-ESEM); (2) a simplified version of this model with growth orientation as the sole antecedent factor; and (3) a Structural Equation Model (SEM) using specific factors as antecedents. In the illustrative example, the degree of cultural diversity in motivational levels is found to be relatively small, comparable in magnitude to gender differences. However, more complex antecedent-consequence models can easily lead to the conclusion that significant diversity exists between cultural groups. Our findings challenge common assumptions about the cultural specificity of academic motivation models and highlight a promising yet often overlooked factor for building robust explanations of learning motivation: students’ growth orientation
Fluoroless bedside implantation of the ProtekDuo cannula:clinical experience at a tertiary care center
The ProtekDuo dual-lumen cannula allows percutaneous support in right ventricular failure with or without gas exchange impairments. However, positioning of the device is resource demanding. The usual approach requires a fluoroscopy–equipped operating room, possibly limiting its wider and timely adoption. We report our initial experience with bedside, fluoroless ProtekDuo implantation under transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) guidance in a tertiary care national referral center. Eight critically ill patients underwent bedside ProtekDuo placement for right ventricular dysfunction or acute respiratory distress syndrome with right ventricular failure. All procedures were completed successfully without procedural complications. Our findings demonstrate that bedside, TEE-guided, fluoroless ProtekDuo cannulation is feasible and safe, potentially expanding access to advanced mechanical circulatory support.</p
Oncological Outcomes of Locally Recurrent Rectal Cancer Treated With Curative Intent:A Single Center Retrospective Cohort Study
Background: Treatment paradigms for patients with locally recurrent rectal cancer (LRRC) have shifted from palliative approaches to multimodal curative-intent treatment in selected patients. This retrospective cohort study evaluates survival outcomes following curative-intent treatment in patients with LRRC. Methods: All consecutive patients with LRRC undergoing curative-intent treatment at a tertiary referral center between 2014 and 2024 were retrospectively analyzed (n = 147). Overall survival (OS), local re-recurrence-free survival (LRFS), metastasis-free survival (MFS), and prognostic factors were analyzed using Kaplan–Meier and Cox regression analyses. Results: 147 patients underwent neoadjuvant treatment with curative intent at baseline. After response assessment, 117/147 (80%) patients continued curative therapy, which consisted of 109/117 (93%) patients undergoing surgery and a highly selected group of 8/117 (7%) patients monitored with a watch-and-wait strategy. For the remaining 30/147 patients (20%), treatment intent changed from curative to palliative. Median OS was 54 months with a 5-year OS of 47%. For patients treated with an overall curative intent (n = 117), median OS was 63 months with a 5-year OS of 58%. Clear resection margins, achieved in 76% of surgical cases, was a prognostic factor for OS and LRFS: 5-year OS was 66% for R0-resections and 33% for R1-resections (p < 0.001), and 3-year RFS was 69% for R0-resections and 50% for R1-resections (p < 0.001). Among the watch-and-wait group, 5/8 patients remained alive and disease-free (median follow-up 14 months (IQR 9–16)). Conclusions: This single-center retrospective cohort study demonstrates reasonably good oncological outcomes following curative-intent LRRC treatment. Further investigation of watch-and-wait strategies in highly selected patients is warranted.</p
