The experiences of women working in the computer games industry: an in-depth qualitative study
This chapter provides a unique understanding of women working in the computer games industry. In depth interviews were undertaken with seven female game workers based in the UK. The women were interviewed as part of a larger study focusing on women in this male dominated industry. The issues detailed in this chapter focus on the industry as a viable career for women, the experience of being a woman working in games and the working environment; including work life balance issues, experiences of discrimination and experiences of sexism. The research discussed is related to attracting and retaining women in games development. The issues are of relevance to employers, professional bodies, policy makers and researchers of the games industry and the wider ICT and SET industries. Recommendations from the findings and future research directions are provided

The classification of compression bandages, merits and limitations of the current compression therapy regimen, and the research into the development of novel orthopaedic padding and compression bandages are highlighted. The role of compression therapy in the treatment of oedema, varicose veins and deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is outlined. Research and development of a novel single-layer 3D spacer bandage, which replaces the existing multilayer bandage regime, is discussed

Reflection is now regarded as a key facet to any coach’s repertoire. Much of the sports coaching literature related to reflection consider how coaches’ reflect. However, few studies contemplate the possible ways that reflective practice may be used with athletes or how performers themselves engage in such a process. This paper offers the sports coaching fraternity fresh insights into the world of elite performers’ reflective practice and process. Furthermore, the research method used represents an alternative to invasive interview techniques and highlights a paradox wherein representations of the truth may be seen more clearly from a distance

This workshop examines the various models of open access scholarly communication that are available to authors, with an emphasis on the open access publication of theses. Open access itself will be discussed to provide context for the open access availability of theses, and the benefits and any concerns and issues will also be presented. The various means of making theses open access will be examined, and will include discussion of depositing theses into open access repositories such as the University of Bolton Institutional Repository (UBIR). Use of the British Library EThOS service will also be discussed, as will open access publishing of other types of research
Ancillary knowledge advancement of employee-driven innovation: A personal-interactive services innovation perspective
Knowledge has been frequently substantiated as a determinant of employees’ ability to innovate. Yet, the review of literature reveals that the role of knowledge and its influence on employees has been less researched and understood from a service innovation perspective. This study aimed to explore the nature and role of knowledge relevant to service employees’ individual innovative behaviour and leading to initiating innovation within the sub-sector of personal-interactive services. A case study research method was applied to achieve the research objectives that examined and compared two personal-interactive service environments of two hotel properties. The study outcome contributes to service innovation research by identifying the nature and ancillary role of knowledge and also by unravelling four patterns of employees’ individual innovative behaviour
High frequency microfluidic performance of LiNbO3 and ZnO surface acoustic wave devices
Rayleigh surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices based on 128 degrees YX LiNbO3 and ZnO/Si substrates with different resonant frequencies from similar to 62 MHz to similar to 275 MHz were fabricated and characterized. Effects of SAW frequency and power on microfluidic performance (including streaming, pumping, and jetting) were investigated. SAW excitation frequency influenced the SAW attenuation length and hence the acoustic energy absorbed by the liquid. At higher frequencies (e. g., above 100 MHz), the SAW dissipated into liquid decays more rapidly with much shorter decay lengths. Increasing the radio frequency (RF) frequencies of the devices resulted in an increased power threshold for streaming, pumping, and especially jetting, which is attributed to an increased absorption rate of acoustic wave energy. ZnO SAW devices could achieve similar streaming, pumping, and jetting effects as well as frequency effect, although the SAW signals are relatively weaker. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC

Integration of Clustering Power Systems Approach and Data Management Infrastructure for Smart Grids
The power generation in power systems nowadays changes from the traditional centralized to contemporary decentralized structure that disperses widely in distribution grids. It results in power generation from the bottom level, i.e. in local area, which is contrary to the traditional centralized power generation that provides power flow in top-to-down direction. A way to handle the impact of power generation in the local area is introduced by using clustering power systems approach (CPSA). The concept of this approach is to enable stabilization of power systems in bottom-up direction from generation units in the distribution grids to the upstream transmission grids. To realize this concept and make it consistent with the emerging smart grid technology, a massive data must be taken into account. Hence, the data management infrastructure for the CPSA is proposed. It is based on the database system and designed for online data management. In addition, the web-based user interface is developed to manipulate data efficiently and achieve concurrently the flexibility in power systems control. Eventually, this paper demonstrates an experiment, a pragmatic real-time simulation of the integration of the CPSA and the proposed data management infrastructure. The focus of the experiment is to prove the application of the data management, and the realization of the cluster concept
