Expanding adaptive transfer in the provision of University writing support in non-Anglophone contexts: a qualitative study in Czech Republic
This paper focuses on the provision of writing support for native English speaking and multilingual students attending an accredited, English-medium University located in a non-English-speaking country. The study is concerned with the expansion of the theoretical framework of adaptive transfer as it applies to institutional accreditation, writing support assessment, student motivation, reflective practice and alternative uses of technology in writing support. It expands the theoretical framework of adaptive transfer by education theorists Michael-John DePalma and Jeffrey M. Ringer (2012) to analyze themes on accreditation, assessment, student motivation, reflective practice and the use of technology, stemming from peer-reviewed, conference presented and published articles from 2014 to the present. The study concludes that because of the distinct contextual differences, issues and backgrounds of student and teaching faculty that are present in non-Anglophone locations, university level writing support facilities could serve students more effectively by modifying approaches employed at associate or parent institutions residing in Anglophone locations
The historical development of Engineering Higher Education and implications on future teaching and learning - bridging the skills gap
The introduction of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education in the UK was protracted, initially driven by scientific developments but ultimately shaped and enhanced by industrial demand. The current focus of widening participation, engaging students from less conventional academic backgrounds is further compounded by the need to satisfy the STEM, (particularly engineering) shortfall in the UK, hence alternative approaches to encourage young people into such areas is being supported via more expansive routes into higher education. This has opened some particularly educationally profound avenues such as University Technical Colleges, and also via HE in FE: supporting Higher Apprenticeship Schemes and delivering Foundation Degrees.The teaching and learning styles employed in undergraduate engineering, although highly researched still display some evidence of historical methods and traditional didactic teaching styles. These approaches have the potential to both impose additional pressure on and de-motivate students from less traditional vocationally orientated backgrounds
Medical Mishaps. Time for a new approach? A review of current practice for the settlement of clinical claims for medical errors.
Within the context of clinical negligence, often described as ‘medical mishaps’ or ‘medical error(s)’, the latest estimate of the cost to the NHS is about £22.7 billion (NHS Litigation Authority, July 2013), It is expected that this cost will rise to 28.6 billion (Gibb, F, August 2015). The MPS, expressed concerns of escalating costs (Medical Protection Society, 2011).Study Reviews current practice by analysing randomly selected court cases, time frame to resolve / reach a settlement and quantifying legal costs.Furthermore, review, how medical mishaps are redressed in Denmark, Norway and New Zealand., where a no-fault scheme operates, eligibility criteria, differ, between various existing no-fault schemes (Brahams, D., 1988a), and (Erichsen, M., 2001).The Scottish Government Review Group (2011), recommended a no-fault compensation scheme, emphasising “removal of a fault-based approach offers the opportunity to collect valuable data on medical error, as well as to engage in systems learning to facilitate error prevention and therefore enhance patient safety” (Frank Stephen, Angela Melville and Tammy Krause, 2012).In Florida and Virginia USA, a no-fault scheme has been operated since 1980s onwards for birth related neurological injury.A ‘no-fault’ compensation approach for medical mishaps used in other countries may help develop an alternative model for England and Wales. Further, such an approach may save considerable resources for the NHS.Overall, in terms of contribution to knowledge, this study seeks to contribute to the current corpus of knowledge

The human male specific Y-chromosome passes from father to son essentially unchanged, but occasionally a random change, known as a mutation, occurs. These mutations, also called markers, serve as beacons and can be mapped. When geneticists identify a mutation in a DNA test, they try to determine when it first occurred and in which part of the world. Thus, the Y-chromosome haplogroup, which is a population group descended from a common ancestor, can be used to trace the paternal lines of men. The poster describes a research project that aims to identify the ancient geographical origins of key ethnic communities of the Indian subcontinent, based on their Y-DNA haplogroups

Picturing Nietzsche’s Thus Spoke Zarathustra. Representing philosophical ideas in graphic novel format
This commentary appraises the approach and methodology used in a visual interpretation of Nietzsche’s Thus Spoke Zarathustra in the form of graphic narrative art. While not alone in the field of graphic novel adaptations, this research project presents, for the first time in English, an illustrative interpretation of all four parts of Thus Spoke Zarathustra, one that tackles Nietzsche’s challenging concepts in a more philosophically informed light through the praxis of the visual aphorism, which is posited as a visual counterpart to Nietzsche’s chosen form of rhetoric.The interpretation and depiction of Nietzsche’s concepts are considered alongside other attempts by graphic artists to represent literary and philosophical ideas in a visual format. Attention is also paid to Nietzsche’s distorted public reputation and, in particular, the way that his concept of the Übermensch has become synonymous with the DC character, Superman. Given how entrenched such an association is, this graphic reworking has sought to draw profitably on the links in order to make more contemporary sense of Nietzsche’s avatar, Zarathustra.Not only does this thesis contribute to knowledge in being the first comprehensive reworking of all four parts of Nietzsche’s text in graphic format, but also in developing the concept of the ‘visual aphorism’ as a powerful technique for representing complex philosophical and conceptual ideas
An investigation into causes, effects and measures for minimising time overruns in road construction projects in Malawi: the case of Roads Authority
Construction projects have a worldwide history of being completed beyond their schedule durations. Road construction is not an exception, as such client organisations end up paying huge sums of money in compensations for delayed projects while contractors on the other hand suffer losses from delayed projects.The study aims at identifying causes, effects and measures for minimising time overruns in road construction projects in Malawi. A detailed literature review and structured questionnaire surveys were used for the study; and results revealed the presence of time overruns in road construction projects in Malawi.Results of the study have revealed that inadequate planning, inability to pre-finance projects, delays in processing contractors’ payments, delayed mobilisation to project sites, slow decision making, delayed approvals for scope changes, workers risky behaviours, poor planning and scheduling, price fluctuations, political interference, equipment unavailability, inclement weather as causes of time overruns in projects.Time overruns in road projects have cost overruns, extension of time, claims, disputes, contract termination, loss of profits, project abandonment, poor quality of work due to hurried execution, idling of resources, bankruptcy, arbitration, litigation and loss of employees as their effects.The study has established the following measures which when effectively implemented will minimise time overruns in road construction projects: proper project planning and scheduling, effective and efficient management of sites and supervision services, availability of complete designs at project commencement, coordination on site, adherence to specification, use of appropriate construction methods; use of proper and modern equipment, conducting frequent progress meetings, construction according to drawings and use of up to date technology.As a way of mitigating time overruns in road construction projects in Malawi, the study recommends the following: ensuring secure and reliable funding for the entire project duration; availability of complete designs at project commencement; awarding contracts to technically and financially sound contractors; ensure availability by revamping activities of PVHO; implementation of measures which will counter the occurrence of time overruns in projects; and holding of frequent progress site meetings
