Virtual placements management process supported by technology: proposal and first results of the semester of code

    No full text
This paper explains the Virtual Alliances for Learning Society European Project technological approach to support a virtual placements management process. Also, this paper shows the first results of the practical part of the project, the Semester of Code, explaining the detected problems, the issues, the challenges, and some actions to improve the development of these kinds of virtual placements programs. In order to allow the readers to better comprehend the approach and its results, this paper also describes three of the main virtual placements programs around the world, regarding both their organization and technological approach

A useful test for trade mark use: an analysis of current CJEU guidance and the difference between defining use online and offline

    No full text
Within Directive 2008/95 trade mark use remains ill defined. In Arsenal v. Reed the CJEU offered broad guidance regarding use offline whilst in Google France they created a new test to establish the same online. The recent case Flynn Pharma v. Drugsrus suggests the existence of a divergence in approach, questioning the usefulness of this test and making a re-evaluation necessary

Differentiation in education – opportunities and limitations in a widening participation Higher Education Institution.

    No full text
Differentiation is discussed as a teaching and learning strategy used to enable and encourage better educational outcomes in the Higher Education context. As we examine differentiation within our practice in Early Childhood Studies and Business Studies, we take into consideration factors such as stage of learning, institutional structure and student characteristics. The aims of this paper are to explore the individual differentiation practices within the two disciplinary areas through personal reflection; to explore the opportunities and limitations to differentiated practices in the HE context, specifically from the point of view of students; and to compare the views from two different academic disciplines in order to highlight similarities, differences and good practice. This is achieved in semi-structured interviews with students in their final year who reflect on their learning journeys in a widening participation university

    Creating an environment for learning.

    No full text
This article, the third of an eleven part series, will offer advice and practical tips to new and existing mentors / practice teachers to enable them to develop within their role as a mentor and aid them in developing a portfolio of evidence that meets the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC 2008a) Standards to Support Learning and Assessment in Practice (SSLAP). It will stress the importance of creating a good quality practice placement, furthermore it will examine the essential components that make an effective good quality practice placement all of which directly relate to the fifth domain and outcomes of the Nursing and Midwifery Councils (2008a) SSLAP named ‘Creating an Environment for Learning’. The article essentially presents a number of suggested ways in which this domain can be achieved and how mentors can utilise these methods in order to demonstrate and gather evidence to show they have met NMC (2008a) domain and outcomes for ‘Creating an Environment for Learning’. More importantly a number of learning activities and useful tips will be incorporated to aid prospective and existing mentors / practice teachers to undertake various self assessments in achieving this domain. This will hopefully assist mentors / practice teachers in gathering relevant evidence in order to demonstrate how they have met the aforementioned domain and outcomes as part of the requirement to become or maintain the NMC (2008a) mentor / practice teacher requirements. For more in-depth information on the NMC (2008a) SSLAP and requirements refer to part 1 of the series ‘Developing mentors to support students in practice, Part 1: Standards to Support Learning and Assessment in Practice

Conical beam monopole antenna design for Chinese area positioning system

    No full text
This article describes the operational principle of the satellite-based Chinese Area Positioning System (CAPS) and proposes a monopole antenna for a large anchored buoy platform in harshmarine environment. The proposed antenna is highly omnidirectional with sufficiently wide half-power beamwidth (HPBW) greater than 40° (i.e., not less than ±20° swing) by using a conical ground plane, taking into account the geostationary satellite position, link budget, sea conditions, volume and cost. The impedance bandwidth defined by 10 dB return loss is 750 MHz (5.60–6.35 GHz), and the main lobe direction and the half-power beamwidth are about 46° and 43° at the operating frequency 5.885 GHz, respectively. The antenna prototype has been installed on-site to test its performance in sea. The results confirm that the proposed antenna is a suitable candidate for a variety of CAPS applications in China

In vitro antibacterial and antioxidant activities of cotton fabrics treated with bael fruit shell extract

    No full text
The present study is aimed at evaluating the antibacterial and antioxidant properties of bael fruit shell (BFS) extract. Hot water extraction (HWE) and ultrasonic assisted extraction (UAE) techniques have been used to understand the effectiveness of the extraction process and its relation to impart enhanced functional property of cotton fabric. The cotton fabric has been treated with BFS extract by using padding mangle. The effectiveness of antibacterial activity against both the Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli) bacteria and antioxidant property has been evaluated both qualitatively and quantitatively. The results reveal that UAE-BFS treated fabric shows 93% reduction for E coli and 82% for S aureus, which is higher as compared to HWE-BFS treated fabric (91% for E coli and 61 % for S aureus). This trend has also been observed in qualitative zone of inhibition method. Antioxidant efficacy of UAE treated fabric is 86%, whereas HWE treated fabric registers 80% activity

Exploring the link between research and economic growth : an empirical study of China and USA

    No full text
In this paper, we explore the link between scientific and technical research and economic growth in China and USA over the sample period 1981–2012 using the extended Cobb–Douglas model with capital per worker and the quantity of scientific and technical journal articles (research publications) per worker. We examine the cointegration relationship and present the short-run and long-run results using the autoregressive distributed lag bounds procedure. Further, we examine the direction of causality between research publications per worker results and economic growth variables using the Toda and Yamamoto (J Econom 66(1–2):225–250, 1995) procedure. Our results indicate for both countries research publications per worker positively influence the output per worker both in the short-run and the long-run. The causality results for China indicate a bi-directional causality between research publications per worker and output per worker, duly emphasizing the mutually reinforcing effect. In case of USA, we note a unidirectional causation output per worker to research publications per worker indicating that output Granger cause research publications
