Active Learning Environments: Teaching space but not as you know it!

    No full text
Traditional “chalk and talk” lecture-style classrooms are quickly evolving to become student-centred, technology-rich flexible learning environments that support active and collaborative learning. An active learning environment facilitates greater collaboration between tutor and learner by the introduction of student-centred pedagogy and supporting learning technologies. It is now recognised that using an active learning approach results in greater student engagement, retention and success. There are many potential challenges to adopting an active learning approach. None more so than, what happens if it all goes wrong? Therefore, it is vital for tutors to be effective and familiar with the use of technology to support active learning in conjunction with new pedagogies and room facilities. This presentation will examine the affordance of using an active learning approach to enhance the student experience. Central to the theme of the presentation will be the state of the art active learning room within the Institute of Management, University of Bolton facilitated by Sony Vision Exchange and Ubicast lecture capture. Lecture capture systems provide opportunities for students to review lecture content at any time. Delegates will be encouraged to engage in discussion around how to embed active learning in their teaching and in particular the use of the Sony Vision Exchange suite

    No full text
This paper describes the adaptation and use of the Monopoly® board game as a simple simulator to help introduce the principles of probability and risk. It can be used across a range of programmes from undergraduate to postgraduate studies and executive training and offers a new approach to teaching probability and risk with dice to produce a collaborative simulated gaming environment. It allows students to be actively involved in developing the probability of throwing dice numbers and analyses risk and decision making in a competitive environment. Concluding with a probability analysis technique, it allows the student to reflect on formal and informal approaches to decision-making in risk environments and helps build communication for discussion, collaborative learning and self-analysis among students

Assessing the business ethics of Saudi Arabian Islamic banking sector: an analysis of banks’ employees and customers perspectives

    No full text
Islamic banking involves the conduct of banking and finance activities based on the values derived from the body of Islamic law known as Shari’ah. The infusion of ethical and social objectives into banking activities is a fundamental requirement and distinguishing hallmark of Islamic banking. Islamic banking is deeply entrenched in the socio-economic fabric of Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia holds a very important place in the history of Islam. It is in the area that is now Saudi Arabia that Prophet Mohamed (peace be upon him) received the revelation of the Holy Quran and largely gave the Sunnah teachings that form the body of the holy knowledge of Islam. The first disciples of Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him) started preaching, turning converts, and making disciples in the area that is modern-day Saudi Arabia. Due to these happenings, Saudi Arabia is viewed as the cradle of Islam. As such, faith-based institutions that operate in Saudi Arabia are on the microscope of the public eye. Islamic banks operating in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia are no exception. By virtue of being faith-based institutions, stakeholders have high expectations on matters to do with ethics when it comes to Saudi Arabian Islamic banks. This research aims to present an evaluation of the ethical performance of Islamic banks from the perspectives of customers and employees.Given that there is limited research conducted on the business ethics of Islamic banks at the global level in general, and in Saudi Arabia in particular, this research will extensively use appropriate research tools and methods to study the Saudi Islamic banking situation with regards to the ethical performance of Islamic banks and generate crucial conclusions pertaining to the gaps, if any, between the ideal expectations of the ethical performance and what is practiced by the Islamic banks from the perceptions of employees and customers.Correspondingly, this research aims to make contributions that fill up information gaps in the extant body of literature with regards to the business ethics of Saudi based Islamic banks. This research applies the mixed-method approach, where qualitative and quantitative tools are used. The research study collects data from both primary and secondary sources through literature review as well as from the questionnaires administered to the employees and customers of four Islamic banks in Saudi Arabia. The data are analysed statistically through descriptive statistics and inferential statistics by using the statistical software known as SPSS. The findings reveal that there is a chasm between the perceptions of customers and employees. Customers are majorly ambivalent about the ethical performance of Saudibased Islamic banks. On the other hand, the employees of Islamic banks generally approve of the ethical performance of these banks. The findings also suggest that there is room for improvement for Islamic banks when it comes to ethical performance

Global Trends and Key Factors for Financial Stability in the European Union

    No full text
Globalization is defined as the process of creating a single financial market, which requires the implementation of unique regulations across countries. It is also very well accepted the argument that, globalization is targeting the integration of national financial markets into a single global market. Recent research conducted across eight decades, indicated that Globalization is one of the main trends in the academic research. Moreover, countries’ financial systems and the creation of Euromarkets are key components in the process of globalization. Following such rationale, this study undertakes a holistic analysis into globalization, and the global factors impending on the financial stability in general, and European Union in particular. This is a theoretical study, which designs a theoretical framework with factors affecting the regional and global financial stability. The aim of the research is to provide a holistic perspective upon the impact of globalization and the factors impending on the European Union’s financial stability. The objectives of this study are: (1) To offer an evolving and holistic view on the globalization and Euro area; (2) To analyse theoretically possible factors affecting regional financial stability; (3) To design a Conceptual Research Framework which can be further developed, and to formulate hypotheses. This is a theoretical study based on systematic literature review conducted along eight decades on articles from high rank journals, and an unsystematic literature review into relevant journal articles. The findings suggest that globalization has a crucial role in the financial stability in Europe. However, there is a multiple factor impact determined by globalization and linked to globalization. Between these factors, the authors can enumerate the process of integration, inequalities, and crises. The research is a contribution to theory, through the creation of a theoretical framework. In addition, by raising an awareness of the key factors that influence upon the financial stability in Europe and across the world, the study is a contribution to practice
