Disordered eating and body image in adolescents with type 1 diabetes
The period of adolescence and a diagnosis of type 1 diabetes increase the risk of eating disorders, and specifically disordered eating behaviours, which have a significant impact on blood glucose levels and can result in short- and longterm complications. The necessary focus on dietary intake, portion precision and carbohydrate counting as part of the management of their diabetes can result in adolescents developing a fixation on food, a negative body image, and ‘dialbulimia’.Eating disorders are common in girls but also occurs in boys and is often under recognised.This article describes the links between body image and disordered eating behaviours and considers how recognition and treatment can be improved in practice
Inclusion of disabled Higher Education students: why are we not there yet?
This review tracks the last 50 years of the journey towards the inclusion of disabled students in Higher Education (H.E.). It provides a critical overview of the impact of evolving U.K. policy aimed at widening participation for disabled H.E. students. The overview spotlights the historical, ideological and political influences on policy and practice and illuminates the underlying causes of the social injustices still experienced by disabled H.E. students. Despite a government commitment to inclusive practices, data reveals disabled H.E. students are among those most at risk of withdrawing from university and have lower degree outcomes than non-disabled students (OfS. 2021. The article illustrates how the prevailing models of disability have influenced definitions of disability and inclusion. It highlights tensions between the Government's accountability agenda and inclusive practice ideals. The paper reviews U.K. studies of inclusion of disabled H.E. students. It unearths barriers, particularly concerning stigma, disclosure, and social inclusion, rooted in historical misrepresentations of disability remaining intact in contemporary society. Implications for H.E. institutions and policymakers are highlighted. Recommendations for researchers include research aligned with disabled people's lived experiences and further investigation of barriers relating to attitudes of non-disabled students

Provision of acute medicine services for pregnant women in UK hospitals: Data from the Society for Acute Medicine Benchmarking Audit 2019
Background: Medical problems during pregnancy are the leading cause of maternal mortality in the UK. Pregnant women often present through acute services to the medical team, requiring timely access to appropriate services, physicians trained to manage medical problems in pregnancy, with locally agreed guidance available.Methods: Data were collected through the Society for Acute Medicine Benchmarking Audit, a national audit of service delivery and patient care in acute medicine over a 24 hour period.Results: One hundred and thirty hospitals participated: 5.5% had an acute medicine consultant trained in obstetric medicine, and 38% of hospitals had a named lead for maternal medicine. This was not related to hospital size (p ¼ 0.313). Sixty-four units had local guidelines for medical problems in pregnancy; 43% had a local guideline for venous thromboembolism in pregnancy. Centres with a named lead had more guidelines (p ¼ 0.019).Conclusion: Current provision of services within acute medicine for pregnant women does not meet national recommendation
Effect of compatibilizers on lignin/bio-polyamide blend carbon precursor filament properties and their potential for thermostabilisation and carbonisation
Biobased blends from hydroxypropyl modified lignin (TcC) and a biobased polyamide (PA1010) were produced by continuous sub-pilot scale melt spinning process. A reactive compatibilization was employed with the help of two different compatibilizers (ethylene-acrylic ester-maleic anhydride (MA) and ethylene-methyl acrylate-glycidyl methacrylate (GMA)) to enhance the compatibility between the TcC and PA1010. The enhanced compatibility between the TcC and PA1010 achieved by reaction between hydroxyl groups with maleic anhydride groups in the MA compatibilizer or epoxy groups in the GMA compatibilizer via nucleophilic substitution, was confirmed by chemical (Fourier infrared measurements), physical (glass transition, melting and crystallization behaviour), rheological, morphological and tensile properties of the filaments from compatibilized blends. MA compatibilizer required a higher concentration (2 phr) than GMA (1 phr) to achieve an optimal performance because of the difference in the reactive group's concentration within the each compatibilizer. The MA compatibilizer though was more effective than GMA. The precursor blended filaments were successfully carbonized in a lab scale experiment to yield coherent carbon fibres with tensile stress values of 192 ± 77 and 159 ± 95 MPa; and moduli of 16.2 and 13.9 GPa respectively for uncompatibilised and 2% MA compatibilized blends. That the compatibilized carbon fibre properties are slightly inferior may be attributed to the need to accurately control and optimise applied stress during the thermostabilisation and carbonization stages. Notwithstanding, these differences, the results indicate the potential benefit of using compatibilized TcC/PA1010 blend filaments as carbon fibre precursors
Monitoring and diagnosing the natural deterioration of multi-stage helical gearboxes based on modulation signal bispectrum analysis of vibrations
This paper presents a novel method for diagnosing the gradual deterioration of gears using modulation signal bispectrum (MSB) and vibration measurements. A nonlinear model was derived to understand dynamic forces applied to gears that are excited by quadratic terms, e.g., shaft rotating speeds and gear meshing frequencies. Owing to its sensitivity to those quadratic terms, MSB is powerful in recovering less noisy condition related features from the measured vibration signals, e.g., gear meshing and multiples of shaft rotating speed. This allows a more pronounced representation of gear dynamic forces and makes it more effective for detecting early gear deterioration. The proposed method was verified through a run-to-failure test based on a helical gearbox system. The results show small gears at low-speed stages deteriorate faster and fail at 838 hours. This was because they prone to wear more severe due to poorer lubrication conditions compared with gears at high-speed stages. Moreover, fault detectability of the developed MSB-based method outperforms that of time synchronous averaging (TSA). Compared to TSA, clearer signs of early gear deterioration were captured using MSB, which makes it a more powerful tool for monitoring the condition of gearboxes
Graphene oxide incorporating carbon fibre-reinforced composites submitted to simultaneous impact and fire: physicochemical characterisation and toxicology of the by-products
The toxicological profile of particulates released from carbon fibre-reinforced composites (CFC) incorporating nanoadditives, under impact and fire conditions (e.g. aircraft crash), is unknown to date. Our aim was to investigate the effects of simultaneous impact and fire on the physicochemical features of the particles released from CFCs produced from a graphene oxide (GO)-reinforced epoxy resin and the consequences on its toxicological profile. CFC samples with (CFC+GO) or without GO (CFC) were subjected to simultaneous impact and fire through a specific setup. Soot and residues were characterised and their toxicity was compared to that of virgin GO. Virgin GO was not cytotoxic but induced pro-inflammatory and oxidative stress responses. The toxicity profile of CFC was similar for soot and residue: globally not cytotoxic, inducing a pro-inflammatory response and no oxidative stress. However, an increased cytotoxicity at the highest concentration was potentially caused by fibres of reduced diameters or fibril bundles, which were observed only in this condition. While the presence of GO in CFC did not alter the cytotoxicity profile, it seemed to drive the pro-inflammatory and oxidative stress response in soot. On the contrary, in CFC+GO residue the biological activity was decreased due to the physicochemical alterations of the materials
The experience of partner relationships for male survivors of childhood sexual abuse: a qualitative synthesis
Research has documented wide-ranging psychological impacts of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) for male survivors, but their experience of relationships is understudied. This qualitative review aimed to synthesize the qualitative literature concerning the experience of partner relationships for male CSA survivors. Electronic searches were conducted across PsycINFO, CINAHL, and PubMed, complemented by hand searches of references. Searches were limited to English-language peer-reviewed studies. Studies were included if they sampled adult male CSA survivors and reported qualitative data on their experience of partner relationships. Sixteen studies met the review criteria. Articles were quality-appraised using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme qualitative checklist (2018), and narrative synthesis derived five themes: “sexual orientation confusion,” “sexual intimacy difficulties,” “the barrier of emotional intimacy,” “navigating agency,” and “healing and growth through love.” Key findings were male CSA survivors can face considerable barriers to relational intimacy; however, romantic relationships also offer a space to heal and experience post-traumatic growth (PTG). Clinicians should be aware of the diffuse impacts CSA can have upon male survivors’ intimate relationships. Helping survivors and their partners build a safe space in which to process CSA, reassert agency and relational boundaries, and express love and validation can support survivors toward PTG
Perfectionism and attitudes towards sport psychology support and mental health support in athletes
Attitudes towards help-seeking will contribute to whether athletes ask for support for performance and mental health issues when needed. While research outside of sport has found perfectionism is related to negative attitudes towards help-seeking, no studies have examined the relationship in sport. We provided the first test of whether perfectionism predicted attitudes towards both sport psychology support and mental health support. One hundred and sixty-six collegiate athletes completed measures of perfectionism and attitudes towards sport psychology support and mental health support. Multiple regression analyses revealed that perfectionistic concerns positively predicted closedness and stigma to sport psychology support and mental health support, and negatively predicted help-seeking towards mental health support. However, perfectionistic strivings negatively predicted stigma to sport psychology support and mental health support, and positively predicted confidence in sport psychology support and help-seeking towards mental health support. Athletes higher in perfectionistic concerns are less likely to seek support when required
