Addiction recovery stories: John Nelson in conversation with Lisa Ogilvie
Purpose This paper aims to explore the transition from addiction to recovery. It is the third in a series of recovery stories that examine candid accounts of addiction and recovery. Shared components of recovery are considered, along with the change and growth needed to support the transition. Design/methodology/approach The connectedness, hope, identity, meaning in life and empowerment (CHIME) framework comprises five elements important to recovery (connectedness, hope, identity, meaning in life and empowerment). It provides a standard to qualitatively study mental health recovery, having also been applied to addiction recovery. In this paper, an element for growth is included in the model (G-CHIME), to consider both recovery and sustained recovery. A first-hand account of addiction recovery is presented, followed by a semi-structured e-interview with the author of the account. This is structured on the G-CHIME model. Findings This paper shows that addiction recovery is a remarkable process that can be effectually explained using the G-CHIME model. The significance of each element in the model is apparent from the biography and e-interview presented. Originality/value Each account of recovery in this series is unique, and as yet, untold
Magneto-Rotational Augmentation of Bioconvective Transport in Plasma-Nanofluid Flowing through a Penetrable Spinning Disc
The phenomenon of bioconvective transport through the manipulation of motile microorganisms is considered a promising process control technique in several biological processes and microdevices. Inducing convective transport in self-propelling microbes could be tailored to improve mixing, reaction propensity, and concentration transport within the media. This paper examined the combined effect of magnetic and rotational fields on the argumentation of bioconvective transport in the nanofluid-mediated plasma flow. A detailed analysis of the transport and dynamics of reactive forces during bioconvection in a rotary disc-like microchannel is presented. The physics of the problem was described by coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations, which were numerically computed using the spectral relaxation scheme of the spectral homotopy analysis method. It was observed that the imposition of a magnetic field constituted viscous drag in the plasma-nanofluid media, which consequently increases the thermophoretic parameter in the bioconvective flow. It was ascertained that coupled magnetic and rotational effects significantly augmented the motility of microorganisms and translated to growth in momentum and concentration fields which is noticeable in the generation of stretching effect on the bacterium-containing plasma-nanofluid flow. The findings of this study could provide an essential basis for the design of bioreactors, centrifugal microfluidics technologies, and microdevices for use in a broad spectrum of biotechnology
On the Fast DHT Precoding of OFDM Signals over Frequency-Selective Fading Channels for Wireless Applications
Due to high power consumption and other problems, it is unlikely that orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) would be included in the uplink of the future 6G standard. High power consumption in OFDM systems is motivated by the high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) introduced by the inverse Fourier transform (IFFT) processing kernel in the time domain. Linear precoding of the symbols in the frequency domain using discrete Hartley transform (DHT) could be used to minimise the PAPR problem, however, at the cost of increased complexity and power consumption. In this study, we minimise the computation complexity of the DHT precoding on OFDM transceiver schemes and the consequent power consumption. We exploit the involutory properties of the processing kernels to process the DHT and IFFT as a single-processing block, thus reducing the system complexity and power consumption. These also enable a novel power-saving receiver design. We compare the results to three other precoding schemes and the standard OFDM scheme as the baseline; while improving the power consumption efficiency of a Class-A power amplifier from 4.16% to 16.56%, the bit error ratio is also enhanced by up to 5 dB when using a 1/2-rate error-correction coding and 7 dB with interleaving

Psychological skills training and perfectionism: a single subject multiple baseline study
Psychological skills training (PST) is a common and effective form of support provided by sport psychologists. Nevertheless, its use in helping support athletes with perfectionism and some of the problematic issues they can face is unknown. The purpose of the present study was to assess the effectiveness of PST in reducing perfectionistic cognitions and improving emotion experiences in athletes. Using a single-subject multiple baseline research design, we recruited five national level basketball players (M = 21.8 years) based on their concerns over mistakes (a key dimension of perfectionistic concerns). All participants received eight, one-to-one PST sessions over a four-week period. Participants completed self-report measures of perfectionistic cognitions, cognitive appraisals, pre-competition emotions, and performance satisfaction on a weekly basis, before, during, and after the intervention, as well as three-months later. Results suggested that PST improved at least some of the cognitive appraisals, pre-competition emotions and performance satisfaction in most participants. Minimal changes were observed for perfectionistic cognitions. The findings support the general use of PST but other interventions may be required to reduce perfectionistic cognitions
The last place to look: the place of pupil councils within citizen participation in Scottish schools
This article critically examines pupil councils as a means of developing pupils’ citizenship participation. It draws on findings across two research projects. The first study is a mixed method study commissioned by Learning and Teaching Scotland (LTS) that reviews the range of participatory activities in Scottish schools and their contribution to Scotland’s major curriculum revision, the Curriculum for Excellence (CFE). The second is a longer ethnographic study examining young people’s experience of participation projects in more detail. The findings lend strength to the argument that pupil councils as a stand-alone approach are not an effective means of citizenship participation. When pupil councils are complemented by other participation activity across spheres of school interaction, young people’s understanding of and interest in participation can be greatly enhanced. The article examines the cross curricular linkages schools are making, the barriers that impede such linkages and the benefits derived from successful coordinated approaches in light of criteria for ‘graduated participation’ developed through decades of work internationally on children’s participation
