Co collaboration methods in film and archaeology content creation for Holocaust sites - Capturing Holocaust landscapes using drone technology Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum and town
Purpose
The aim was to apply the Production House film model to a co created World War Two narrative for mass public dissemination. Associate Professor Fiona Graham secured HEIF funding for the practice based research project to apply Production House methods in collaboration with stakeholders and academic partners to create visual content, testimonials and produce drone footage with the Curator at the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, Poland.
The development and production of visual content was produced by Associate Professor of Film Technology Fiona Graham in a co collaboration method within Production House with the Centre of Archaeology at Staffordshire University at Auschwitz State Museum in 2016 and the nearby town of Oswiecim using the Production House method.
The use of drone camera technology was applied to capture the size and scale of various landscapes and structures at Auschwitz, the museum and the neighbouring town.
The work was in collaboration for rights and permits with the education department curator at Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum and aimed for public engagement with history to benefit schools and heritage sites in the UK.
The visual drone content is being developed into content with the Department of Education and The Holocaust Education Trust for 2021
Evaluating the use of hypoxia-sensitive markers for body fluid stain age prediction
To augment DNA profiling and body fluid identification techniques efforts are being made to increase the amount of information available from a crime scene stain, which includes efforts to identify externally visible characteristics through phenotypic analysis. A key question surrounding crime scene stains is the length of time between deposition of the stain and its subsequent recovery, in that is the stain recovered related to the incident in question or from a previously deposited stain number of weeks earlier? The inability to answer this fundamental question has a detrimental effect upon the successful completion of a criminal investigation. Once a body fluid leaves the body, the oxygen concentration in the environment changes; therefore, it may be that this change could cause a change in the expression of hypoxia-sensitive biomarkers. Here, a range of bloodstains, liquid saliva and liquid semen samples were collected at 0 days, 7 days, 14 days, 21 days and 28 days of degrading at room temperature (19-22oC), before undergoing total RNA extraction and cDNA synthesis. Blood was recovered from filter paper with 3mm2, with saliva and semen being left in their tubes and swabbed at the appropriate times. All samples then underwent quantitative PCR targeting Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor A (VEGFA) and Hypoxia-Inducible Factor 1 Alpha (HIF1A), with B-Actin (ACTB) as a reference gene. A range of linear and quadratic correlation values was obtained from the qPCR data and used to develop a predictive model with a mean absolute deviation (MAD) of 4.2, 2.1, and 5 days for blood, saliva, and semen respectively. Blind testing indicated that a stain age prediction model based upon VEGFA with ACTB as a reference gene could be used on samples up to four weeks old with a margin of error ranging from 2 days through to 5 days. While a sizeable potential time frame exists using this model; this represents a significant step towards the target of having an accurate stain age prediction model

Lanthanide tri- and tetrathionates and their complexes with triphenylphosphine oxide
Lanthanide tri- and tetrathionate containing species have been prepared in solution by the reaction of potassium tri- and tetrathionate with lanthanide perchlorates. Unstable solid materials from these reactions have been examined by infrared spectroscopy and electrospray mass spectrometry (ESI MS). There was evidence of the formation of S3O62- and S4O62- coordination to lanthanide ions, but it was not possible to produce material suitable for single crystal x-ray studies. The reaction of ethanol solutions from Ln(ClO4)3 / K2SnO6 (n = 3,4) with triphenylphosphine oxide yielded crystalline materials which have been characterised by infrared spectroscopy, electrospray mass spectrometry, elemental analysis and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The trithionate complexes [Ln(S3O6)(Ph3PO)4]ClO4.3H2O (Ln = Nd, Tb) have been isolated. The tetrathionate / Ph3PO reaction gave rise to significant disproportionation giving a small quantity of [Nd(S4O6)(Ph3PO)4(H2O)]ClO4, a different isomer of [Nd(S3O6)(Ph3PO)4H2O]ClO4, neodymium sulfate and elemental sulfur. The crystal structures of the two isomers of [Nd(S3O6)(Ph3PO)4H2O]ClO4 and that of [Nd(S4O6)(Ph3PO)4H2O]ClO4 are reported. Using Q-methodology to explore what is valued from child sexual exploitation services: The importance of safety.
This thesis was written to fulfil the requirements of the University’s Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. The thesis consists of three chapters: a review of the research literature focused on the psychological and trauma-based impact of Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE), an empirical paper exploring young people and staff members’ viewpoints on CSE services and interventions, and an executive summary of the empirical paper which has been designed for dissemination to young people and staff members in CSE services.
The literature review identified four important themes across the research: (1) Overall mental health difficulties, (2) Self-harm and suicide, (3) Are difficulties a precursor or consequence of CSE? (4) Strengths and resilience. The review concluded that children involved in CSE are likely to be experiencing significant mental health difficulties. It was suggested that future research could consider exploring young people’s views on effective CSE interventions.
The empirical paper used Q-methodology to explore the subjective viewpoints of young people and staff members working with CSE services, regarding what is valued most from services and interventions. A total of 18 participants (nine young people and nine staff members) completed Q-sorts in which they were asked to rank 54 statements relating to different aspects of services. Three significant factors emerged: (1) The importance of safety and attunement, (2) Managing trauma and mental health difficulties, (3) Family, normality, and a relaxed approach. All three factors emphasised the importance of safety and trusting relationships between young people and professionals. These three factors identified key areas that service design would find useful to consider. It was recommended that young people are likely to benefit from specialist support from services which promote a relational approach to effectively meet the psychological needs of their service users.

Assessing the landscape visual quality of Shar Planina, North Macedonia
Context
Landscape quality assessment provides a contextual basis for integrating cultural ecosystem services within landscape management and policy. However, measuring landscape visual quality remains a challenge; especially in the Balkans with its complex environmental and socio-cultural history.
Objectives
In response, we present a first assessment of landscape visual quality across Shar Planina, North Macedonia and test the transferability of a visual quality assessment method (VQI) originally developed to evaluate Northwest European landscapes.
Methods
This study includes remote (GIS) and field assessment. The latter produced quality measures which were summarized, scaled and weighted into an index (0 – 1.0) and served as a ground-truth dataset for subsequent GIS assessment. To assess how spatial scale affects the VQI and what scale is most appropriate to capture perceived landscape quality, the remote assessment was applied at scales ranging from 1 to 5 km2 and results were then correlated to field assessment results.
Results
Values for the field VQI range from 0.2 to 0.82 whilst the values from the remote assessment applied at 1 km2 range from 0.1 to 0.74 and increase to 0.77, 0.84 and 0.86 at 2 km2, 3 km2 and 5 km2 respectively. Strongest correlation between the GIS and the field assessment was observed at 2 km2, which captured detail whilst remaining appropriate to the perceived landscape.
Conclusions
Our research allows consideration of this cultural ecosystem service within the wider conservation efforts on Shar Planina and provides methodological guidelines for assessments of visual quality of mountainous landscapes elsewhere in the region
Body fluid identification: A case for more research and innovation
Body fluids are valuable evidence in a range of offences, with tests regularly being used to identify them. However, with the + increasing sensitivity of DNA profiling, capability gaps are becoming increasingly obvious. DNA profiles can also be obtained from body fluids which cannot be identified. Efforts to improve the capability of BFID have focused on genetic strategies. However, such techniques could not be applied to the crime scene. Thus, there is also a need for improved BFID tests to be used at crime scenes or for the examination of items, which would also include the ability to locate vaginal fluids
