Enhancing Smart City Logistics Through IoT-Enabled Predictive Analytics: A Digital Twin and Cybernetic Feedback Approach
The increasing complexity of urban logistics in smart cities requires innovative solutions that leverage real-time data, predictive analytics, and adaptive learning to enhance efficiency. This study presents a predictive analytics framework integrating digital twin technology, IoT-enabled logistics data, and cybernetic feedback loops to improve last-mile delivery accuracy, congestion management, and sustainability in smart cities. Grounded in Systems Theory and Cybernetic Theory, the framework models urban logistics as an interconnected network, where real-time IoT data enable dynamic routing, demand forecasting, and self-regulating logistics operations. By incorporating machine learning-driven predictive analytics, the study demonstrates how AI-powered logistics optimization can enhance urban freight mobility. The cybernetic feedback mechanism further improves adaptive decision-making and operational resilience, allowing logistics networks to respond dynamically to changing urban conditions. The findings provide valuable insights for logistics managers, smart city policymakers, and urban planners, highlighting how AI-driven logistics strategies can reduce congestion, enhance sustainability, and optimize delivery performance. The study also contributes to logistics and smart city research by integrating digital twins with adaptive analytics, addressing gaps in dynamic, feedback-driven logistics models
Convolutional Bi-LSTM for Automatic Personality Recognition from Social Media Texts
Automatic Personality Recognition (APR) has received much attention in recent years due to its wide range of important applications across various fields. The growing use of online social networks provides valuable opportunities for APR, as a strong correlation has been found between what users post on these platforms and their personality traits. Consequently, various APR models have been developed to infer the Big Five personality traits from social media user-generated texts. However, most of these models heavily relied on hand-crafted features, which are unable to capture deep contextual information and learn complex patterns from texts. More importantly, the performance of text-based APR is still unsatisfactory, especially at the level of each personality dimension. To tackle this issue, we propose a new model, called APR_ConvLSTM, that aims to improve text-based APR performance by integrating two robust deep learning architectures: CNN and Bi-LSTM. Unlike existing APR models, the APR_ConvLSTM is a unified end-to-end model where all personality traits are predicted simultaneously and effectively without a need for laborious feature engineering. We also developed a new labeled Big Five personality dataset, called X-Big5, which has been in need for a long time in the APR field. Extensive experiments on the X-Big5 and a publicly available benchmark dataset (PAN-2015 Author Profiling) demonstrate the promising performance of our model over its contenders. Overall, the proposed model achieved the highest Accuracy and F-1 score of 79.51% and 86.54% on the PAN-2015 dataset and 87.95% and 81.35%, respectively, on the X-Big5 dataset. Moreover, it shows promising performance over its competitors, with the highest average Accuracy and F-1 score of 79.01% and 80.56%, respectively, on the combined dataset. The model reached competitive results in predicting Openness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism traits with the highest F1 scores of 88.60%, 77.35%, 76.16%, and 74.52%, respectively, on the combined dataset. The proposed model can positively impact the analysis of social media text generated by different users and help identify their personality traits
Part II - Why do children and young people drop out of sport? A Dynamic Tricky Mix of Three Rocks, Some Pebbles and Lots of Sand.
Organised sport is one potential antidote to the global youth inactivity crisis. Therefore, under-standing why young people drop out constitutes a key research endeavour. In paper 1 of this se-ries, we developed and validated a new Youth Sport Dropout Questionnaire (YSDQ). In paper 2, we used the YSDQ-LV (49-item long version) to examine dropout in 1127 university students from seven European countries. A four-stage analysis investigated the relative and combined im-portance of dropout reasons. Three items – the rocks – were statistically more important: “I prior-itised schoolwork and had no time left to take part in sport”; and “I found other things that I en-joyed doing more than sport”; and “I found it stressful when I did not perform/play as well as I expected”. On average, however, these rocks were rated as “moderately important”, along with 18 reasons (the pebbles) rated as “slightly important to moderately important”, and the remain-ing 26 reasons (the sand) rated as “slightly important to not at all important”. These findings suggest that sport dropout is not caused by a single reason but is underpinned by a dynamic tricky mix of reasons – a series of rocks, pebbles and sand unique to each young person
Concurrent validity of Theia3D markerless motion capture for detecting sagittal kinematic differences between gait speeds
We do not yet understand the concurrent validity of markerless motion capture (MMC) to measure kinematic differences between multiple gait speeds. This study determined the capacity of Theia3D (Theia Markerless Inc.) MMC to detect sagittal-plane kinematic responses to different gait speeds during walking (3 and 5 km/h) and running (10 and 12 km/h). Fourteen participants ambulated on a motorised treadmill, while markerbased motion capture, through optoelectronic cameras (Oqus 7+, Qualisys AB), and MMC, through videos (Miqus, Qualisys AB) were synchronously collected. Sagittal plane changes in pelvis, hip, knee, and ankle kinematics were compared. Mostly excellent waveform similarity was found for joint kinematic changes (coefficient of
multiple determination [CMD] ≥ 0.87), but pelvic tilt was less similar (CMD ≤ 0.48). Agreement between outcome measures (joint minima and maxima, range of motion)
was mostly good-to-excellent (intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC] = 0.475-0.950) with standard error of measurement values of less than 1°. Pelvis kinematics showed lower agreement between systems (ICC = 0.032-0.776). In this study, Theia3D detected changes in hip, knee, and ankle sagittal-plane joint kinematics between speeds with a similar accuracy to the marker-based approach. Therefore, Theia3D is appropriate for use if interested in lower-limb sagittal joint kinematics, but not pelvic tilt
Reconfiguring Pain Interpretation Within a Social Model of Health Using a Simplified Version of Wilber’s All Quadrant All Levels Framework: An Integral Vision
Despite the proliferation of biomedical and psychological treatments, the global burden of chronic intractable (long-term) pain remains high—a treatment-prevalence paradox. The biopsychosocial model, introduced in the 1970s, is central to strategies for managing pain, but has been criticised for being decontextualised and fragmented, compromising the effectiveness of healthcare pain support services and patient care. The aim of this study was to apply a simplified version of Ken Wilber’s All Quadrant All Levels (AQAL) framework to pain in a healthcare context to advance a biopsychosocial understanding. Utilising domain knowledge, the author mapped features of pain and coping to intrasubjective, intraobjective, intersubjective, and interobjective quadrants (perspectives), as well as levels of psychological development. Narratives were crafted to synthesize the findings of mapping with literature from diverse disciplines within the contexts of salutogenesis and a social model of health. The findings showed that AQAL-mapping enhanced contextual biopsychosocial coherence and exposed the conceptual error of reifying pain. Its utility lay in highlighting upstream influences of the painogenic environment, supporting the reconfiguration of pain within a social model of health, as exemplified by the UK’s Rethinking Pain Service. In conclusion, a simple version of the AQAL framework served as a heuristic device to develop an integral vision of pain, opening opportunities for health promotion solutions within a salutogenic context
Industry 4.0 Integration for Sustainability and Value Creation: Moderating Role of Digital and Environmental Strategy
This study investigates the combined impacts of Industry 4.0 (I4.0) technologies and digital transformation (DT) on sustainable consumption and production (SCP), as well as on the value creation (VC). It also examines the moderating influence of digital and environmental strategies on these outcomes. Grounded in the triple-bottom-line and resource-based view theories, the study draws on survey data from 137 supply chain professionals in Malaysia’s large-scale manufacturing sector. Using Smart-PLS structural equation modeling, the results reveal that I4.0 technologies exert a substantial positive effect, explaining a considerable share of variance in both value creation and SCP outcomes. Environmental strategy further
strengthens the link between DT and VC, while digital strategy shows no moderating effect between I4.0 technologies and DT. These findings provide actionable insights for industry practitioners and policymakers, highlighting how technological and environmental alignment can simultaneously advance sustainability, economic performance, and social value
How to combat feelings of emptiness in solo dining?
Solo dining is a growing trend in hospitality, yet little is known about how to improve solo consumers’ experiences. This research identifies feelings of emptiness as a key emotional response that helps explain why solo diners’ experiences tend to be less favorable than those of group diners. Drawing on emotion regulation theory and embodied cognition, we propose that pleasure appeals counteract anticipated emptiness through hedonic framing, while fast-tempo music conveys auditory “fullness” via cross-modal metaphors. Three between-subject experiments with British solo diners by default test and support our hypotheses. Study 1 shows that solo (vs. group) dining lowers satisfaction due to increased feelings of emptiness. Study 2 finds that pleasure-based advertising appeals (vs. challenge-based) increase solo consumers’ purchase intention before consumption. Study 3 reveals that fast-tempo (vs. slow-tempo) ambient music enhances solo diners’ satisfaction by mitigating feelings of emptiness during consumption

In an interview in 1978, Lyotard was asked if he believed a “communication volontaire” is possible. The difficulty of translating this phrase — “self-directed” or “voluntary” communication? — is enhanced by the fact that such a notion seems oddly out of time. Lyotard’s reply invokes aspects of the strange and strained relationship between his most philosophical book, The Differend: Phrases in dispute, and his most popular, The Postmodern Condition: a report on knowledge, in particular the shift from Wittgensteinian ideas of “language games” to that of phrase regimen and its attending critique of anthropocentrism. Is there, in this shift, a move that echoes current questions asked by the conjuncture of art and technology and into which it might, in turn, feed? The possibility of a “communication volontaire” will be considered through the inter-relationship of both texts, Lyotard’s own response in relation to his teachings at the university of Vincennes, and through artworks which perform aspects of this voluntary process
The centrality of energy transition: New global shifts and old realities for sub-Saharan Africa
This article develops a new understanding of energy transition through a qualitative historical analysis of the links between ‘so-called’ global transition and histories of colonialism and capitalism in the sub-Saharan Africa. Drawing from 52 energy transition materials centered on Africa, the article critiques dominant emphasis on global transitions and proposes a multiplicity of transitions from a justice and African perspective and proposes an alternative dialogue that leverages national and regional experiences. We find that drivers of energy transition centre on capital pools and financial concentration and energy supply chains but that these ignore possible plurality of transitions – which is crucial for delivering just transitions – but plentiful evidence also exist showing that this misaligns with national visions and socio-economic and political realities. The paper shows how the current framings of energy transition contradict and are misaligned with national conditions that shape realities and possibilities. As a result, new global shifts in energy architecture, we argue, produces old socio-economic and political realities in the way the sub-Saharan Africa is being integrated in the energy transition. Thus, rather than present energy transition as a new dawn for structural transformation across the sub-region, the current structure and organisation of the transition presents historical continuities of dispossession where social formations are marginalised. We conclude that instead of portraying energy transition as a global phenomenon, emphasis should be placed on the multiplicity of transitions based on historiies of colonialism and neoliberal capitalism. A variety of policy angles that can shape transitions and expansion of renewable energy sources in the region are discussed from an African perspective
Resolving the paradox of green innovation across generations in family firms: an exploratory analysis of incumbents and successors perceptions
Purpose
Informed by the dearth of research and insufficient knowledge of green innovation in family firms, this study explores the intersection of green innovation, family firms and intergenerational succession in resolving the paradox of green innovation across generations.
Design/methodology/approach
This exploratory qualitative study explored the perceptions of incumbents and successors of textile family firms in Italy to highlight the crucial role of firms’ entrepreneurial orientation and social-emotional wealth in shaping and fostering green innovation in family firms.
Findings
The results show that a low bureaucratic process, flexibility and communication strengthen green innovation in family firms. However, the lack of sustainable raw materials, consumer behaviour, insufficient financial capital, stakeholder engagement and risk aversion affects green innovation in family firms. While family firms are willing to engage in green innovation, the results suggest that family firms are more likely to consider green innovation with superior financial benefits rather than environmental benefits alone. According to the results, incumbents and successors differ in harnessing knowledge to increase their entrepreneurial orientation and protect firms’ social-emotional wealth.
Originality/value
Despite many barriers preventing green innovation in small family firms, this study shows that the interaction of internal capabilities, external knowledge and family (entrepreneurial) orientation contributes to green innovation and the overall performance of small family firms
