Adoption of retail banking social media content by millennials in South Africa
Abstract: Organisations are increasingly making use of digital content marketing as a way to attract customers to their offering and promote engagement with their brands. Digital content marketing can be used to stimulate consumer preference, since it has the ability to inform, persuade, and reinforce consumer decisions. Moreover, digital content marketing is proving necessary, particularly when consumers do not have adequate knowledge of a subject, as is often the case with financial products. Millennials in particular, rely on social media digital content for an authentic understanding of brands. The ability to trust information can impact on its use and its ability to influence customer behaviour. Millennials are a large market segment in many countries, including South Africa. They are an important segment for retail banks to understand so that they can target them effectively. Thus, the objective of this study is to investigate the factors that influence trust in social media digital content and its eventual adoption for decision-making by millennial retail bank customers...M.Com. Teacher perception of the competence of the school management team in using a professionally inviting culture and its influence on job satisfaction
Abstract: This research aimed to determine teachers’ perceptions on the effectiveness of school management teams to create a professionally inviting culture as a sub-dimension of holistic education and its effects on job satisfaction. To determine the recommendations, 703 teachers and educational managers responded to an electronic survey that contained a range of questions asking the respondents to express their perceptions of their school management team. All types of schools across South Africa were invited to participate. The results indicated that there is a significant positive correlation between teachers’ perceptions of their school management team and job satisfaction. The most important finding was that a professionally inviting culture has a direct statistically significant effect on aspects which enhance job satisfaction, while aspects that impeded job satisfaction act as a moderating variable between a professionally inviting culture and aspects enhancing job satisfaction. With respect to the professionally inviting culture factor, the most important variable positively affecting teacher perception is the relationships between the school management team members and the teachers. Qualification level and duration of teaching experience also played a major role. The final component was a positive correlation between the general management effectiveness of the school management team and the increase in the perceived presence of a professionally inviting culture to enhance job satisfaction. The importance of good professional relationships is a vital component in the creation of a professionally inviting culture as a sub-dimension of holistic leadership.M.Ed. The role of National Professional Teachers’ organisation of South Africa in 21st century professional development
Abstract: This study examines the role of the National Professional Teachers’ Organisation of South Africa (NAPTOSA) in the context of 21st century teacher professional development in South Africa. In this study, the idea of Professional Development Programmes (PDPs) is posited as a strategy to develop teachers’ content knowledge and pedagogical skills. This involves educators being developed to align with the current curriculum and to the requirements of the needs of 21st century educational practice. Applying a qualitative research approach, data collection was undertaken by means of semi-structured interviews and some document study. Educators/members were selected from two schools in Ekurhuleni district, Gauteng province. Findings showed that even though NAPTOSA implemented teacher development programmes, much remained to be done in aligning programmes to 21st century education. Nevertheless, participation in PDPs resulted in teachers enhancing their pedagogical skills and becoming relevant for 21st century education. Educators who had attended PDPs revealed good content knowledge and pedagogical skills and they also initiated professional dialogue at their schools. In addition, educators were able to expand their self-efficacy which promoted professional growth. Challenges to teacher development included demanding workloads of educators, problems relating to time and timing of programmes, poor participation and most importantly, resistance to change. It is recommended that NAPTOSA advances the concept of PDPs by creating an awareness among educators about the benefits of being involved in PDPs. Furthermore, NAPTOSA can provide recognition of educators’ participation in PDPs, as a way of promoting teacher professionalism. Finally, the study recommends that the constraining factors to teacher development can be overcome by working towards online PDPs which can be scheduled at the teachers’ convenience.M.Ed. Leadership challenges in a post #Feesmustfall private Higher Education Institutions
Abstract: In their fight for free and decolonised education, students across South Africa's universities started the #FeesMustFall movement in response to the tuition fee increase which had been announced by universities. The #FeesMustFall movement led to a nation-wide closure of operations across universities in South Africa. As such, this study evaluated the leadership challenges in private higher education institutions in a post #FeesMustFall era. The #FeesMustFall movement took place in the public HEI’s, thus research has not been conducted on the impact (direct or indirect) and outcomes of the movement on private higher education institutions. Through the use of a qualitative research approach, semi-structured interviews were used to collect data from two private higher education institutions based in Johannesburg, Gauteng. The study focused on individuals that occupied leadership positions in private HEI’s such as principals/directors, assistant directors, head of departments, academic programme managers, and general manager...M.Ed. The design and review of an integrated asset-based community-led and sustainable livelihoods practice model for poverty alleviation
Abstract: After more than two decades of democracy, South Africa is still battling with issues of poverty, inequality, unemployment, and hunger (Statistics South Africa (Stats SA), 2018). The estimates on poverty by Stats SA in their report on the Social Profile of Vulnerable Groups in South Africa (2014) reveal that many South African households are still severely affected by poverty. This is an indication that more still needs to be done to address this scourge, especially considering that the current intervention is more of a needs-based approach that is top-down. Poverty is spreading like wildfire and must be extinguished. To ensure community participation and sustainability in the achievement of project outcomes, there is a need to adopt a holistic approach in addressing community issues, focusing on their strengths and assets to attain sustainable livelihood. This means that all factors at play such as social, economic, physical, political, social and natural assets need to be considered when tackling development issues. United, focused and collective efforts need to be encouraged from the grassroots level with an emphasis on the strengths and assets of the community members. This calls for a shift from concentrating on local deficiencies and external assets towards concentrating on the strengths and assets of communities. Against this background, the goal of the research study was to design and review an integrated asset-based community-led and sustainable livelihoods practice model for poverty alleviation in the Tshwane region which is in the Gauteng Province in South Africa. The integration of an Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) approach and the Sustainable Livelihoods Approach (SLA) in the design of the practice model was useful in encouraging participation and linking community strengths and assets while improving self-reliance and local decision-making of community members. Given the above and to challenge the traditional needs-based focus of community development, the research builds from the community-led approaches, namely, social development, ABCD and SL approaches as theoretical frameworks for the study...D.Litt. et Phil.
