The Smart City Hospitality Framework : creating a foundation for collaborative reflections on overtourism that support destination design

    Get PDF
Abstract: This paper introduces the Smart City Hospitality Framework, which could serve as the foundation for a destination-design-driven approach to urban tourism governance and dealing with overtourism issues. This conceptual framework is purposely designed to stimulate collaborative (informed) reflections on overtourism and urban tourism development that could support system analyses, problem structuring and development of transition agendas and pathways within the context of turning urban tourism into a transition arena that contributes to setting in motion a sustainability transition at city level. It merges the dimensions of sustainable development (environmentally responsible and equitable economic development) and city hospitality (the extent to which the city acts as a good ‘host’ to all its ‘guests’, including residents and businesses). Resilience resides at its centre to highlight the temporal aspects of these dimensions, and their interdependencies. To show how this framework can serve as the foundation for destination design efforts in practice, a short description of (experiences with) serious game-playing sessions that employ its logic in six European cities is provided

Development of a growth strategy model for female-owned mid-scale enterprises

    Get PDF
Abstract: The growth of mid-scale enterprises in Africa has been constantly prevented from achieving successful entrepreneurial status by countless number of hindrances. Female owned mid-scale enterprises are most affected due to the considerably low participation of women in various economies in comparison to men. The lack of effective strategies to promote the growth of their businesses and the inclination of female owned mid-scale enterprises towards necessity-based entrepreneurship greatly limits their business growth potential. Additionally, there is a dearth of growth models, which are strategically focused on female mid-scale entrepreneurship, particularly in Africa. Therefore, this study was aimed at developing a growth strategy model for female mid-scale entrepreneurs. The researcher adopted a qualitative mode of research entailing a comprehensive literature review process from which a preliminary conceptual growth strategy model was developed. This model was aligned and modified with data from semi-structured interviews with three prominent female mid-scale entrepreneurs from East Africa due to the region’s unique economic development characteristics with entrepreneurship as a vital instrument for growth, to develop a comprehensive growth strategy model. Semi-structured interviews were used as the main data collection approach to gather input from participants on their respective mid-scale enterprises. A multi-pronged data analysis method with a comprehensive focus on conversation analysis, was also adopted. Conversation analysis, which focuses on social interactions during conversations, was applied to uncover the in-depth meaning of the lengthy conversations held with the selected female mid-scale entrepreneurs...D. Sustainability and stakeholder relationships in embedded mining communities in Zimbabwe

    Get PDF
Abstract: In many developing countries mining companies have traditionally siphoned resources without paying due attention to the needs of embedded community and upon their departure, ghost towns with abject poverty and environmental degradation is left behind. The sustainability concept has been suggested as result following principles initiated from the global north, but this is adapted through this study for developing countries, specifically for a desperately poor country such as Zimbabwe. Multiple models and theories used in the study are from the Global North and analysed concepts independently, which is different from the model initiated from the Global South that integrated various concepts, theories and data obtained from targeted population from the Global South. This thesis creates a model to this extent after exploring how Unki mine in Zimbabwe is engaging its embedded community to ensure sustainability with long term positive effects to reduce poverty as well as maintain exceptional stakeholder relationships. The study uses a qualitative case study research design, non-probability sampling techniques such as purposive, snowball; stratified random sampling and criterion samplings were employed for data collection for the study. Interviews, focus group discussions and archival documentations were used as data gathering techniques. The study was influenced by constructivism and used an intepretivists research theory. Strategic communication theory, stakeholder theory and communication constitution of organisation theory amalgamated with various isolated concepts also informed the entire study. The study established that Unki mine positively engage its embedded community for sustainability and good stakeholder relationships. The study also shows challenges faced by the mining company and its embedded community to implement CSR1, CSR2 and social investment initiative (SII) for value addition and excellent relationships. The study also examines the extent to which the Unki mine is accountable to its embedded community for sustainability and stable ties base on mutual understanding and inclusiveness. The study also found out that embedded community are engaged through public-private partnership model (PPPM) to address its embedded community needs. Schools, communication networks such as roads and bridges, clinics, hospitals, boreholes, bee-keeping, planting of trees, drilling of boreholes and construction of houses for average household families in the community have been implemented to the embedded community to reduce poverty and for value addition. Both the mine and its embedded community face various challenges in enhancing sustainability and vii stakeholder relationships. The mine is accountable in implementing programs that better livelihoods of its embedded community, despite economic meltdown and high inflation in the country. Sustainability stakeholder relationships model (SSRM) emanating from the global South is suggested to explain how sustainability and exceptional stakeholder is achieved in developing nation in contrast with developed nations through amalgamation of multiple isolated concepts and theoretical frameworksD.Litt. et Phil. Abstract: The research was focused on phytomining using gold (Au) and ruthenium (Ru) in a biomatrix from Manihot Esculenta, a cyanogen-rich plant species. The catalytic reactions based on furfural conversion to furfural alcohol and the various aspects were explored and observations made. The work focused on using artificially contaminated garden potting soils as models of mine tailing and metal-rich dumps. Soils were contaminated with aqueous Ru(III) and Au(III) solutions to deposit soluble metal ions...M.Sc. (Chemistry

Cartography, engineering, and geology in the making of Witbank : an environmental history of coal mining in the Witbank District, 1903-1945

    Get PDF
Abstract: The Witbank district became South Africa’s biggest coal supplier during the early decades of the twentieth-century and it is still the largest contributor to the country’s coal output. To date, numerous studies have detailed the development of the district’s mining industry, but there has been no historical explanation for how the district came to assume such a position in the country’s mining economy. This thesis provides a historical explanation for the district’s rise to biggest coal producer by investigating the role of labour, science and technology in the growth of its mining industry. It uses a historical perspective to explore the role of cartographic and geological knowledge, mining engineering, railways, and labour in the development of the Witbank Labour District. The study uses a combination of archival sources and draws on relevant literature from environmental history and the history of science and technology as well as the history of mining to demonstrate the role of scientific institutions and experts in the making of the Witbank Coalfield. It seeks to illustrate that the district’s rise to prominence was enabled by the cartographic representation of farms in ways that explicitly related their surface environments to the coal deposits that lay beneath them. It argues that the creation of the Witbank Labour District was enabled by the interaction between cartographic and geological knowledge, mining methods and machines, railway construction and expansion, and the availability of labour.M.A. (Historical Studies

A critical evaluation of natural resources utilization and land use-land cover dynamics in the Vhembe Biosphere Reserve of the Limpopo Province in South Africa

    Get PDF
Abstract: Biosphere Reserves (BRs) seek to reconcile a sustainable relationship between human welfare and environmental integrity through a multi‐stakeholder system which fosters long‐term environmental conservation and development. Since the inception, humans have continued to influence the landscapes in the BRs. For effective environmental conservation, the management in BRs must reconcile trade‐offs between conservation and development, and address the pressures placed by humans on the environmental resources. The Vhembe Biosphere Reserve (VBR) is considered among the important landscapes which contain important biological and cultural resources that need to be conserved. Understanding human interactions with the natural environment can be an important strategy that will better enhance the sustainable ecosystem management. As a result, this study assessed natural resource utilization and Land Use ‐ Land Cover (LU‐LC) dynamics in the VBR of the Limpopo Province in South Africa. Primary data were collected by means of a mixed research method. A questionnaire‐administered survey was conducted on 310 household respondents and 50 tourists. Remote Sensing technique were used to collect information on the LU‐LC dynamics of the study area. The quantitative data collected from the questionnaire survey was analysed using descriptive statistics such as percentages, frequency counts, and mean scores as well as inferential statistics like Chi‐Square test, Kruskal‐Wallis H test, Mann‐Whitney U test and Principal Component Analysis...Ph.D. (Environmental Management

Improving information privacy and security : strengthening digital literacy in organisations

    Get PDF
Abstract: In a world of instant information, information privacy and security are under constant attack. With that being the case, organisations are expected to comply with regulations of securing and ensuring that information assets are protected. Employees are also expected to operate within the set frameworks that have been adopted by the organisation, which brings about the question of digital literacy among the workforce in order to achieve the set goals. The security of information alludes to the manner in which information is stored, processed and transmitted in order to comply with the organisation’s information systems frameworks. The privacy of information can be described as the safeguarding of information related to a particular subject’s identity. In addition, the security of information is a significant instrument for ensuring information resources and business goals, while privacy is centred on the safety of a person's rights and privileges concerning similar information
