The use of online discussion board and blogs to enhance History student teachers’ Work Integrated Learning (WIL)
Abstract: The paper reports on research on History student teachers’ enhancement of Work Integrated Learning (WIL) using online tools like a discussion board and blogs. It draws on the enhancement programme planned for the History student teachers – 78 Bachelor of Education students (BEd) 4th-year students and 28 Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) students who were expected to integrate technological tools in their teaching during WIL; some of them, mostly PGCE students lacked the necessary Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) in this regard. Thus, the main purpose of this study was to explore the extent to which the online discussion board and blogs enhanced student teachers’ classroom practice during WIL. The theoretical lens that informed this study was the five-factor model of mentoring for effective teaching that underpinned the need for improved support and mentoring by the History student teachers: personal attributes, system requirements, pedagogical knowledge, modelling, and feedback. Qualitative research methods and purposive sampling were used. The data was analysed using content analysis as per the five-factor model of mentoring for effective teaching. The findings revealed that student teachers responded overwhelmingly positively to the use of the online tools. They also revealed that the one-and-a-half-hour face-to-face debriefing was not acceptable to the majority of the participants. Most of them felt that it was just a formality and failed to address their immediate needs compared to being mentored online by their peers. In light of these findings, the study suggests that the usage of an online discussion board and blogs in mentoring and encouraging the improvement of student teachers’ PCK should be considered and included when planning WIL programmes

Abstract: This study carried out an exploratory analysis of Brazilian productive diversification using official unpublished information on multiproduct plants obtained from the IBGE’s Annual Industrial Survey. The study is innovative given that it presents direct production data from multiproduct plants and elaborates a parameter for comparison between diversified and nondiversified sectors. Another differential refers to the high level of sectoral disaggregation, which includes about 100 manufacturing sectors. Results show that the share of sectors with companies that diversify production is small, albeit representative in terms of net sales revenue and production value. The economic indicators for the diversified share are more significant and grow as the level of diversification increases. Low and medium-low tech sectors tend to diversify more towards close sectors (intra-industry) while high and medium-high technology sectors engage in both intra and interindustry diversificatio
A psychobiographical study of Elie Wiesel : our brother’s keeper
Abstract: It has been argued that the only satisfactory approach to appreciate the compound meanings and aftermaths of trauma from the Holocaust would be through studying the entire lives of individual survivors. As a way of preserving the experiential and historical memory of the Holocaust and in responding to the relative neglect of the individual child and adolescent survivor in Holocaust trauma research, a comprehensive psychological understanding of an exemplary adolescent survivor’s life narrative is forged to comprehend the long-term effects of Holocaust trauma from a lifespan, developmental perspective. Principles of psychobiographical research approached through Plessis’ (2017) 12-step model are applied within a psychoanalytic and psychodynamic framework to explore the entire life of Elie Wiesel so that it can be made meaning of psychologically. In employing phenomenologicalhermeneutic life-narrative analysis (PLA) as a method of analysis, this study concludes Elie’s life being characterised by a progression from deep despair to a triumphant achievement of faith. Although his life following liberation was characterised by a psychological space Gerson (2009) describes as a ‘dead third’, Elie, it has been argued, was able to make use of his internal resources partly fostered in his childhood to reengage an empathic ‘live third’ that would allow him to live with a sense of integrity and meaning into his old age. Analysis of Elie’s life suggests that his childhood trauma coloured his internal world, ultimately informing the course of his perceived role in the external world. A qualitative exploration of male ex-offenders’ experiences of community-based reintegration programs in Gauteng
Abstract: The dilemma of high incarceration rates is a long-standing, global concern plaguing even the most developed and affluent societies of the world. Concomitant to high incarceration rates is the problem of recidivism. Recidivism is strongly linked to the effectiveness and influence of a prison system’s rehabilitative and reintegration programs. South Africa is counted among countries with the highest recidivism rates in the world. It is against this backdrop that this study aimed to explore male ex-offenders’ experiences of community-based reintegration programs in Gauteng. The objective was to provide an understanding of the role played by community-based reintegration programs in the reduction of recidivism. Interviews were conducted with 4 male ex-offenders based in Gauteng. The study found that participants faced various challenges to their reintegration process, which were addressed in some form by resources and support provided by a community-based reintegration program in which they were involved. These programs played a pivotal role in facilitating reintegration into society as law-abiding citizens. The findings showed that despite the effectiveness of community-based reintegration programs in successful ex-offender reintegration, such programs are severely scarce in Gauteng. Hence, most ex-offenders do not have access to post-incarceration supports. This contributes to an increased recidivism rate. Leaching analysis of copper and cobalt from sulfide ores in sulfuric acid- sodium chloride media

(Extraction Metallurgy)Abstract: This study investigated the effects of sulfuric acid concentration, sodium chloride concentration, temperature, particle size distribution, and leaching time on copper and cobalt recovery from a sulfide ore. A representative sample was first characterized using X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron and Microscopy coupled with Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) to determine the chemistry, the mineralogy, and the mineral distribution, respectively. The outcomes from the characterization revealed that the ores contain copper and cobalt as valuable minerals associated with iron and disseminated in the gangue minerals which occur principally in a silicate form. After characterization, the sample was subjected to leaching in the presence of a mixt solution containing H2SO4 and NaCl. The thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of understanding the dissolution of Cu and Co from sulfide sources were studied while investigating the effect of parameters such as H2SO4 concentration, the addition of NaCl, particles size and temperature. The atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) was used the determine the amount of dissolved copper, cobalt, and iron. The residues generated from the leaching were also characterized for the chemistry, mineralogy, and mineral distribution while the outcomes were compared to the as-received sample. The results revealed that an increase of temperature from 65 to 85℃ had a positive effect on the recovery of copper and cobalt while under 55 ℃ no large influence was observed. Also, the acid concentration had a significant role in dissolving copper and cobalt from its matrix. The recovery of copper, cobalt and iron was essentially dependent of sulfuric acid concentration in the pH range from 0.8 to 2. Leaching experiments were ran with and without sodium chloride, a range of NaCl concentrations from 1 to 4 M was added in the leaching solution; it was observed that copper and cobalt recovery was enhanced while sodium chloride was added in the leaching solution but started decreasing at high temperature (85 ℃) when the sodium concentration was about 4 M. This recovery decline might be explained by the fact sodium chloride crystallize at temperatures above 80℃. Cobalt recovery was half that copper; the main reason of that observation is that, in the presence of H2S, cobalt can precipitate from an aqueous solution as cobalt sulfide with different stoichiometric ratios and iron precipitated in form of natro-jarosite. Copper and cobalt minerals were exposure at all particle size distribution by this fact a slight increase of copper and cobalt leaching rates was observed by varying the particle size distribution. Chemical control, and diffusion control models gave the best fitting to the copper, cobalt, and iron data. The activation energies were calculated in the temperature range IV from 45 to 85℃. The use of the Arrhenius equation gives the values of the activation energy of 10.92, 18.83 and 25.25 kJ/mol respectively for copper, cobalt, and iron dissolution, for the chemical reaction control and 31.023, 37.28 and 50.32 kJ/mol respectively for copper, cobalt, and iron dissolution for the diffusion reaction control. The measured maximum recovery of copper, cobalt and iron within 120 minutes were nearly 24.71%, 15.65% and 15.64% respectively. Moreover, to compare experimental output data from leaching experiments and the predicted value, an artificial neural network (ANN) was developed. The copper, cobalt, and iron recoveries as desired responses; sulfuric acid concentration (M), sodium chloride concentration (M), temperature (℃) and particle size distribution (μm) and leaching time (minutes) were the inputs variables and the stirring speed as the bias. Feed-forward back-propagation artificial neural network algorithm was used to develop, train, and predict the model. A total of 204 sets of data were used in the development and training of the model. To reach the network with a good agreement and highest generalizability and to reduce the error between the measured and predicted, the neural networks with different number hidden layers (one up to ten number of hidden layers) was searched. As a result, three architectures (arrangements) were developed; {5-1-3}, {5-5-3} and {5-10-3} architectures could give the most accurate prediction for copper, cobalt, and iron leaching rate. The regression analysis of the {5-1-3-3} arrangement gave the correlation coefficient of 0.98, 0.96, and 0.98 and the mean square error of 0.87, 1.37, 0.69 for the training, validation, and testing set, respectively for copper, cobalt, and iron recoveries. In the {5-5-3-3} architecture, it found a good correlation coefficient of 0.995, 0.99, and 0.99 and the mean square error of 0.224, 0,35, and 0.26 for the training, validation, and testing set, respectively. The correlation coefficient was about 0.997, 0.997, and 0.997 and the mean square error values were 0.111, 0,148, and 0.106 for the training, validation, and testing set in {5-10-3-3} architecture. The results demonstrated that ANN has a good potential to predict copper, cobalt, and iron recoveries. The increase in the number of hidden layers was found to increase the performance of the ANN model. The predicted copper, cobalt, and iron recoveries of {5-10-3-3} architecture was used for the comparison with the experimental values. The predicted maximum recovery of copper, cobalt and iron within 120 minutes were nearly 24.794%, 15.576% and 16.204% respectively
Exploring the educational possible selves of young people placed in Child and Youth Care Centres in Johannesburg
Abstract: Quality education plays a pivotal role in a young person’s life as it has a direct impact on the probability of a young person firstly getting a job and secondly on their earning potential once they have a job. In South Africa, young people in care (YPIC) are considered the most vulnerable population and therefore various researchers have highlighted the importance of utilising this time in care effectively to adequately prepare young people for transitioning out of care. This study presents qualitative findings exploring the educational possible selves of YPIC in Gauteng South Africa. The study aimed to explore the APSs of YPIC, to determine if completing school forms part of their hoped-for possible selves. A qualitative research design was followed, this design was utilised to gain a deeper understanding of the world as constructed by the young people participating in the study. A phenomenological approach was chosen to better understand the academic possible selves of young people in care. Five young people who have been residing in child and youth care centres (CYCC) in Gauteng Johannesburg were purposefully sampled for the study. The study made use of thematic analysis of the data that was collected through semi-structured interviews making use of the River of Life drawing and Possible Me Tree exercise. The theoretical lens that was utilised was the theory of possible selves, the paper explored the educational possible selves of young people at three future points in their life, after completing their June exams, after completing school and three years after leaving school. The young people participating in the study held positive future positive selves and held a future aspiration in mind that they identified and hoped to work towards. Working hard in school emerged as an important part of their journey, while subject choice stood out as an obstacle in their way. The young people identified the importance of having meaningful relationships with a mentor in the field as pivotal. Throughout the study, it became apparent that the young people had a strong desire to give back to the community as they felt that they had received assistance from various sources along the way. The young people felt that job shadowing, and mentorship programmes could assist them in their careers. Tangible and emotional support from the child and youth care centre, family and school stood out as very important to the participants. The young people all voiced a fear relating to rejection which translated into their feared possible selves. Adoption of industry 4.0 digital technologies for optimization smart key performance indicators
Abstract: The rapid development of technology has resulted in an unprecedented growth of businesses. The growth of businesses requires effective optimization techniques in order to achieve business success and sustainability. Businesses define vision and associated strategies in order to achieve business success and sustainability. The performance of the vision and associated strategies is managed by means of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). The adoption of KPIs reveals the underperforming areas of the business strategy, as well as the areas that perform optimally. This makes KPIs a key tool in managing the overall performance of the business. The traditional methods of defining KPIs encompass fundamental gaps such as subjectivity to human knowledge and preferences. This results in nonrevolutionary and static KPIs that are unable to adapt to the changes in business areas such as staff, business units, functions, and processes. The objective of this study is to explore an approach to supplement traditional KPIs by looking at the business data, identifying relationships and trends, and creating new smart KPIs dynamically for optimizing business performance. The proposed approach adopts the digital technologies of the 4th Industrial revolution (4IR). The Optimization Smart KPIs Model (OSKM), which is based on 4IR digital technologies, is proposed and developed. The OSKM comprises two databases; 4-tier structured database that enables the storage of traditional KPIs with such characteristics as enterprise functions, business functions, organizational level, and KPI (name, frequency, type, perspective, formula, value, unit of measurement); and the simplified 2-tier structured database that enables the storage of each of the traditional KPIs with only the enterprise function and the value. The key features of the OSKM is genericity and data centricity; the model can be applied at any type of industry and is purely data-centric as it only depends on business data to optimize business. To evaluate the OSKM, two case studies are conducted; one at the open pit mining company and another one at the underground gold mining company, respectively. The open pit mining company encompasses four operational systems, one geology and mine planning system, and one Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system. These systems are assimilated through the vertical, horizontal, and end-to-end integration layers of 4IR. These integrated systems produce cross-functional KPIs (CFKPIs) on which the OSKM is applied. The application of the OSKM on the CFKPIs of the open pit Mine yields such outputs as discovery of the constituents of each business variable, discovery of intercorrelations and interdependencies between business variables, identification of the most important variables on the performance management of the Mine’s operations, optimization smart KPIs that reveal 16 the key drivers as business evolves and data changes, business strategy alignment, business optimization, process automation, predictive analysis, and change management. The underground gold Mine produces, amongst many, CFKPIs that manage the performance of conveyor belts, mining fleet, and mining equipment. The application of the OSKM on these CFKPIs produces the same type of outputs produced at the open pit Mine. This proves the genericity of the model and the capability to handle complexities from various businesses as each case study comprises different operational and management intricacies. The OSKM is a model that leverages such 4IR digital technologies as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Analytics (DA), with the support of Internet of Things (IoT) and Cyber Physical Systems (CPS) to produce novel optimization smart KPIs that evolve with the changes in business and data. The model’s independence from human influence to produce and prioritize business KPIs reduces subjectivity significantly. This significant reduction in human subjectivity enables the alignment of business decisions to the actual, instead of supposed, business needs.
