Factors influencing implementation of poverty alleviation strategies in the City of Ekurhuleni

Abstract: This study sought to achieve an understanding of the historical background of poverty in South Africa in order to establish the context wherein the strategies that have been put in place to deal with this issue occur. These strategies, then, needed to be defined and their effectiveness assessed according to previous successes in order to propose alternative solutions or enhancements to current practices. In so doing, it may be possible to present a clear way forward for dealing with the issue of poverty and, ultimately, improving the livelihoods of those citizens affected by it. The study is qualitative in nature and performed literature and documentary reviews of official reports. It utilised an unobtrusive method for the research. This study provides a conceptual framework gained from the relevant literature in an effort to explain the challenges related to poverty. The study contextualises factors that affect the effective implementation of poverty alleviation strategies in the City of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality. This study recommends that the CoE should: give preference to unemployed graduates in CoE job posts; ensure an accurate measurement of poverty elements; facilitate more investment in local brands; vigorous monitoring of social grant distribution; offer training programmes for capacity building; and invest in technology-driven innovation and training.M.A. (Public Management and Governance
