    A termite bug in early Miocene amber of the Dominican Republic (Hemiptera, Termitaphididae). (American Museum novitates, no. 3619)

(some col.) ; 26 cm.Includes bibliographical references (p. 10).A new species of the highly specialized hemipteran family of social ectosymbionts, the Termitaphididae, is reported in Miocene amber from the Dominican Republic: Termitaradus avitinquilinus, n.sp. It differs from the only other fossil termitaphidid (Termitaradus protera Poinar and Doyen), in Miocene Mexican amber, and from modern species by various distinctive features. Two of the three specimens of T. avitinquilinus are preserved in a piece of amber with its presumed host, a worker of the basal termite, Mastotermes electrodominicus Krishna and Grimaldi. The hypothesis that the family Termitaphididae is ancient and inhabited Pangaea is disputed in favor of a much more recent, Tertiary origin. It is suggested, in fact, that termitaphidids are highly modified Aradidae, possibly derived from Mezirinae

Peters and subsequent authors. The original description of each has been consulted unless otherwise noted, coordinates given for type localities when possible, currently accepted names for the taxa included, and comments on taxonomic history provided. Eight hundred fifty-eight names are treated, 332 of them introduced by G.M. Mathews. Types of 35 of these are not in AMNH, and 15 were not found

    Review of Sparasionini

Electroteleia Brues (Baltic amber), Sceliomorpha Ashmead (Neotropics) and Sparasion Latreille (Nearctic, Palearctic, Oriental, and Afrotropical regions) are redescribed. Listron Musetti and Johnson, new genus is described from Chile with two species, L. politum Musetti and Johnson, new species (type species of the genus), and L. bilaminatum Masner, new species. Mexon Masner and Johnson, new genus, is described from Mexico, with two new species, M. adelphos Masner and Johnson, new species (type species of the genus), and M. consors Masner and Johnson, new species. The synonymy of Aliofreniger Szabó with Sceliomorpha and of Prosparasion Kieffer with Sparasion are confirmed. Transfer of the type species of Prosparasion, P. coeruleum Kieffer, 1913 into the genus Sparasion makes it a secondary junior homonym of Sparasion coeruleus Kieffer, 1905. The replacement name Sparasion lividus Johnson, Masner, and Musetti is proposed for the junior name to resolve this homonymy. The gender of the name Sparasion is discussed, and we propose that it should be treated as a masculinenoun. The authorship of the family-group name Sparasionini is credited to Dahlbom (1858)

(some col.), maps ; 26 cm.Includes bibliographical references (p. 35-40).The lithostratigrahy and sedimentology of the fossiliferous Upper Cretaceous strata exposed in the Gobi Desert of Mongolia at Ukhaa Tolgod are described and mapped on aerial photos. Topographic features are also mapped by plane table and alidade. Five lithologic and sedimentologic facies are described: E-1, distinctly cross-stratified sandstone with fine structure, interpreted to represent eolian dune deposits; E-2, vaguely bedded sandstone with cross-stratified concretionary sheets, interpreted to represent eolian dune deposits modified by diagenetic formation of slope-parallel concretionary sheets of pedogenic calcite; S, structureless sandstone lacking concretions or cross-strata, interpreted to represent sandslide deposits generated by mass wasting along the lee slopes; C, conglomerate interpreted to represent basin-margin conglomerates washed into the dune field from adjacent topographic highs; and M, mudstone and siltstone interpreted to represent interdune deposition in ephemeral ponds and lakes. Facies E-2 and S have not been reported previously. Eleven stratigraphic sections at various localities within the Ukhaa Tolgod drainage basin are documented. The exposed composite section consists of about 75 m of pale orange sandstones, greenish-brown conglomerates, and brown siltstones that are products of an arid environment. Four schematic cross sections are documented to illustrate the lateral relationships among the five facies. In the Ukhaa Tolgod area, the beds dip about 2.5° to the south, away from the nearby Gilbent Range. This structural attitude is interpreted to be related to the uplift of the Gilbent block along normal faults exposed at the base of the range. The strata at Ukhaa Tolgod are referred to the Djadokhta Formation. Similar to the classic Djadokhta exposures at Bayn Dzak, the sequence of strata reflects a mixture of facies E-1, E-2, S, and M in the lower part of the section, with prominent beds of Facies C near the top. The dune-derived sandslides of Facies S contain a rich skeletal fauna of Late Cretaceous dinosaurs, mammals, and lizards. Essentially, all the skeletal remains collected at Ukhaa Tolgod come from Facies S. Facies E-1 does contain numerous, concave-up depressions in the cross-strata interpreted as vertebrate tracks. Facies E-2 contains abundant cylindrical structures interpreted as burrows. As seen in the Bayn Dzak Member at Bayn Dzak, facies E-1, E-2, S, and M dominate the lower part of the section at Ukhaa Tolgod, with prominent beds of Facies C exposed near the top. Accordingly, the exposures at Ukhaa Tolgod are referred to the Bayn Dzak Member of the Djadokhta Formation. Classic exposures of the Barun Goyot Formation at Khulsan differ in having units of flat-bedded sandstone intercalated with beds of Facies S near the top of the section. To date, over 1,000 vertebrate skulls and skeletons have been collected from Facies S. Most are preserved as float contained in small calcareous nodules; however, some were found in situ. Many specimens represent either fairly complete skulls or skulls with articulated or associated postcranial skeletons. Based on faunal similarities between Bayn Dzak and Ukhaa Tolgod, the fauna at Ukhaa Tolgod is interpreted to reflect a Campanian age. The rich assemblage of fossils makes Ukhaa Tolgod one of the richest Late Cretaceous vertebrate fossil localities in the world, and the fossils provide unique insights into evolutionary developments of mammals, lizards, and dinosaurs, including birds, less than 10 my before the terminal Cretaceous extinction event

    Review of Cerradomys

    46 p. : ill., maps ; 26 cm.Includes bibliographical references (p. 35-38).Cerradomys is a monophyletic genus that includes four known species, Cerradomys subflavus, C. maracajuensis, C. marinhus, and C. scotti, distributed throughout the open vegetation belt across South America, from northeastern Brazil to southeastern Bolivia, and from eastern to northwestern Paraguay. We revised the status of the species currently assigned to this genus by analyzing skins, skulls, karyotypes, and cytochrome b DNA sequences. We also described two novel species, one distributed in the Brazilian states of Minas Gerais, Bahia, and Sergipe, and the other in the states of Paraíba, Pernambuco, Piauí, Ceará, and Maranhão. Molecular analysis suggested the following phylogenetics arrangement: (((C. subflavus-C. sp.n.2) C. sp.n.1) C. scotti)(C. marinhus-C. maracajuensis)). Apparently, both novel species inhabit the Caatinga domain and penetrated the coastal Atlantic rainforest, differing from the remaining congeneric species that are typical open-area inhabitants

(1 col.), 1 map ; 26 cm.Includes bibliographical references (p. 18-19).The new genus Decorosa Opitz, known only from the Dominican Republic, and its four new species are described: D. aladecoris, D. iviei, D. limatula, and D. neiba. Reduction of the seventh row of elytral punctations and filiform funicular antennomeres distinguish Decorosa specimens from other epiphloeines with antennae composed of 10 antennomeres. Aside from the conventional components of generic revisions this treatise also includes a review of Greater Antillean and Hispaniolan paleogeography, and comments about phylogenetics and zoogeographic considerations. Distributional records, in conjunction with analysis of intrageneric relationships suggest that Decorosa evolved in northern Hispaniola. Available specimens of Decorosa were collected from mountain forests of the Cordillera Central (1160-2885 m), Sierra de Neiba, (1856-1874 m), and from eastern terrain prehistorically considered part of the northern element of ancient Hispaniola. Compelling evidence from geology and biology suggests that extant Hispaniola was prehistorically composed of a northern and southern island. It is suggested that ancestral Decorosa split into the limatula-iviei and decorosa-neiba stocks in the more northern ancient terrain of Hispaniola. Subsequently, each of two ancestral lineages yielded at least two sister species. It is further postulated that there occurred two dispersal events that brought one species of each sister pair to more southern Hispaniola; limatula from the limatula-iviei lineage and neiba from the aladecoris-neiba lineage

Includes bibliographical references (v. 1, p. 830-841).The split of Orayvi, the largest Hopi town, in 1906, continues to resonate as a profound event in Puebloan cultural history, exemplary for anthropological explanations of fission in small-scale, kin-based human societies. Multiple hypotheses have been offered (sociological, materialist, ideological, and agential), each pointing to alternative, often mutually exclusive, causes. But effective analysis of the split crucially depends upon accurate data and apposite conceptual tools. The received picture of Orayvi, both empirically and analytically, is seriously flawed, notably owing to neglect of the archival record. With particular attention to demography, social forms, and material conditions, this monograph seeks to redress those flaws, both structurally and historically. A new assessment of social structure focuses on the interplay of matrilineal kinship with Orayvi's 'houses' and ritual sodalities. An examination of material conditions, especially in Oraibi Wash farmlands, draws on unconsidered survey and allotment records. The exact population of Orayvi in 1906 is reconstructed from an array of census sources (presented in detail), and correlated by houses, kinship groups, and ritual sodalities. An extended appendix (Part II) presents a series of unpublished documents. The work's principal aim is to produce a comprehensive picture of the Orayvi split's sociology, economy, demography, and history. As a 'total social fact,' the Orayvi split resists reductive explanation to just one set of factors, and requires detailed attention to contexts both structural and historical, material and cognitive

    Review of Platnickia (Aranea, Zodariidae)

(some col.), maps ; 26 cm.Includes bibliographical references (p. 19).Although only two species have been assigned to the temperate South American zodariid genus Platnickia Jocqué, the fauna is actually more diverse. The type species, P. elegans (Nicolet), is widespread in Chile, from Coquimbo south to Chiloé, and in adjacent Argentina, whereas P. bergi (Simon) is known only from the far southern tip of the continent: Magallanes in Chile, Tierra del Fuego in Argentina, and the Falkland Islands. Both species are redescribed on the basis of newly collected material. Three new species are described: P. roble from Ñuble, Chile; P. wedalen, found in southern Chile, from Cautín to Aisén, as well as adjacent Argentina and the Falkland Islands, and P. bolson, known only from Llanquihue, Chile, and Río Negro, Argentina
