Social Learning in Complex Systems : Experiments and Simulations

    No full text
Human evolution has been shaped by our capacity to learn from one another. Social learning allows individuals to inherit not only genetic traits but also the accumulated knowledge of others, driving cumulative cultural evolution. This thesis combines experimental and computational approaches to examine the psychology, evolution, and future of social learning in complex systems. Chapter 1 presents a laboratory experiment that characterises individual heterogeneity in social learning strategies within networked environments, showing that people vary in how they integrate social information, and that network topology shapes learning strategies. Chapter 2 extends this framework with a gene–culture coevolutionary model, exploring how social ties evolve alongside learning strategies and demonstrating that information quality and cost influence evolutionary outcomes. Chapter 3 investigates human–algorithm collective innovation through online experiments and simulations, revealing when machine exploration complements or limits human social learning. Together, these chapters link individual cognition, social structure, and learning from artificial agents, offering theoretical and practical insights into how humans learn socially in complex systems

Late Re-Engagement Into HIV Care Among Adults in the Swiss HIV Cohort Study.

    No full text
Little is known about the clinical status of persons with HIV who re-engage in care after an interruption. We evaluated the immunologic and clinical characteristics of individuals re-engaging in care within the Swiss HIV Cohort Study. Participants who re-engaged in care after an interruption >14 months with a viral load ≥100 copies/mL were classified as having interrupted antiretroviral therapy (ART). We defined late re-engagement as re-engaging with a CD4 cell count of <350 cells/µL or a new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stage C disease. Linear and logistic regression models with restricted cubic splines were used to estimate the mean CD4 cell count at re-engagement and the probability of late re-engagement as a function of care interruption duration. Of 14,864 participants with a median follow-up of 10.2 years (interquartile range 4.7-17.2 years), 2768 (18.6%) interrupted care, of whom 1489 (53.8%) re-engaged. Among those re-engaging, 62.3% had interrupted ART. For participants who interrupted ART, the mean CD4 count declined from 374 cells/µL [95% confidence interval (CI): 358 to 391 cells/µL] before the interruption to 250 cells/µL (95% CI: 221 to 281 cells/µL) among those re-engaging after 14 months, and to 185 cells/µL (95% CI: 160 to 212 cells/µL) among those re-engaging after 60 months. The estimated risk of late re-engagement in care was 68.6% (95% CI: 62.3% to 74.4%) for participants who interrupted ART for 14 months and 75.2% (95% CI: 68.9% to 80.6%) for those who interrupted ART for 60 months. Although HIV care interruptions are not very common in Switzerland, most persons with HIV re-engaging after interrupting ART return with late-stage HIV

Kingmakers and Kingbreakers: Philistines, Arameans, and Historical Patterning in Samuel–Kings

    No full text
In this study, Stephen Germany investigates the literary function of the Philistines and Arameans in the books of Samuel and Kings and reconstructs the compositional history and historical background of the narratives in which they appear. Within these narratives, the Philistines and Arameans serve as archetypal aggressors against Israel and Judah, casting the monarchic period as one continually defined by external threats. At the historical level, this portrayal draws on and reframes a received cultural memory of Assyria’s conquest of the northern kingdom of Israel in 722 BCE, creating new images of earlier defeats of Israelite kings by the Philistines and Arameans as a typological anticipation of this major turning point in the history of Israel and Judah

Le sanctuaire de Zeus au sommet de l’Hellanion Oros sur l’île d’Égine

    No full text

Advancements in Cytomegalovirus Management Among Solid Organ Transplant Recipients: Insights From the ESOT CMV Workshop 2023

    No full text
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection poses significant challenges in solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients, impacting graft outcomes, morbidity, and in some cases survival. The ESOT CMV Workshop 2023 convened European experts to discuss current practices and advances in the management of CMV with the aim of improving the quality of life of transplant recipients. Discussions covered crucial areas such as preventive strategies, diagnostic challenges, therapeutic approaches, and the role of cell-mediated immunity (CMI) monitoring. Despite advances, ambiguity persists in optimal CMV management across European transplant centers. Preventive strategies, including universal prophylaxis and pre-emptive therapy, are effective but consensus is lacking with respect to the preferred approach. Diagnostic challenges such as standardization of viral load thresholds and detection of end-organ disease complicate timely intervention. While newer therapies like maribavir hold promise for treating complicated CMV infections, sustaining viral clearance remains a challenge. Integrating CMI monitoring into CMV management could personalize treatment decisions but has limitations in in terms of predictive value and accessibility. Further research is needed to fill these gaps and optimize CMV management. The collaborative efforts, led by the European Society for Organ Transplantation (ESOT), aim to standardize and improve CMV care, ensuring better outcomes for SOT recipients. Psychometric Properties and Normative Data of the Spanish UPPS-P Impulsive Behavior Scale in Adolescents

    No full text
Impulsivity is a multidimensional construct linked to a broad spectrum of psychopathologicaland neuropsychological disorders. The UPPS-P model has emerged as a valuable tool forassessing impulsivity from a multi-dimensional perspective. Despite its relevance, few studieshave examined the psychometric properties of the UPPS-P scale scores in a large, representativesample of adolescents. This study aims to evaluate the psychometric properties of the SpanishUPPS-P in adolescents and to establish normative data for this population in Spain. To thisend, 9024 students aged 11-19 from 66 different Spanish high schools were included. The fitfor the expected 5-factor model, assessed through confirmatory factor analysis, was inadequate(CFI and TLI ≤ .85, RMSEA = .063), but becomes satisfactory when employing the moreflexible ESEM approach (CFI and TLI ≥ .94, RMSEA = .038), which was invariant across genderand age. Internal consistency reliability was satisfactory (ω = .83 to .94). Convergent validitywith the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale-11-A total score was good (r = .53 to .60). We providepopulation norms of the UPPS-P, which may help practitioners to interpret the UPPS-P scoresof adolescents from the general population in Spain. Subsequent research should exploreimplications for both clinical and non-clinical setting
