    Population balance based modelling of clay and oxide minerals agglomeration behaviour

    In this paper, the modeling of batch drum agglomeration process of selected clay and oxide mineral ores (hematite, quartz, kaolinite and smectite etc.) using population balance model is explored. The coalescence kernels which are linked to feed material and granulator operating conditions are reviewed. The use of a physically based coalescence kernel is shown great promise for the modeling of the granule size distribution of clay and oxide based minerals and both the fundamental material properties and the operating conditions are linked to the model.

    Proportionate affine projection algorithm with selective projections for sparse system identification

    Proportionate-type adaptive filtering algorithms are powerful tools specifically designed for sparse system identification. Among them, proportionate affine projection algorithms are well known for their capability in providing satisfactory convergence and tracking performance with affordable complexity. In this paper, we develop a new proportionate affine projection algorithm that employs a variable projection order and takes into account the proportionate history, resulting in a significant improvement in convergence performance as well as appreciable reduction in average computational complexity. Simulation results corroborate the superior performance of the developed algorithm with respect to previously proposed proportionate affine projection algorithms.

    What do Australian's look for in an on-premise wine list?

    While there has been reasonable research in the food service sector about menu design from a consumer's perspective, little is known about wine lists in an on-premise environment. A study was conducted among a representative sample of Australian consumers to investigate the elements driving consumers' choices from a wine list using an experimental approach. This way offered the opportunity to understand more about the elements driving consumers' choices when analysed within a wine list framework, and the potential segments of the population behaving similarly. Moreover, we could manipulate the items' organisation on a menu to understand whether this has an impact on consumers' choices. We conclude with managerial implications and outline further research avenues (journal article).

    New stochastic robust stability criteria for time-varying delay neutral system with Markovian jump parameters

    In this paper, the problem of stochastic robust stability of time-varying delay neutral system with Markovian jump parameters is investigated. The jumping parameters are considered as a continuous- time, continuous state Markov process. Based on the Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional approach, a new delay-dependent stochastic stability criteria is presented in terms of LMIs. A numerical example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the developed method.

    Distributions of variability in travel times on urban roads - A longitudinal study

    Reliability is an important factor in route choice analysis and is a key performance indicator for transport systems. However, the current parameters used to measure travel time variability may be not sufficient to fully represent reliability. Better understanding of the distributions of travel times is needed for the development of improved metrics for reliability. A comprehensive data analysis involving the assessment of longitudinal travel time data for two urban arterial road corridors in Adelaide, Australia demonstrates that the observed distributions are more complex than previously assumed. The data sets demonstrate strong positive skew, very long upper tails, and sometimes bimodality. This paper proposes the use of alternative statistical distributions for travel time variability, with the Burr Type XII distribution emerging as an appropriate model for both links and routes.

    Recycling of materials to reduce embodied energy consumption in the redevelopment of urban areas

    Whilst the size of many cities around the world is increasing, there is also an imperative for urban areas to minimise their environmental impact. One way to reconcile these opposing trends is by the densification of cities. Urban areas can be redeveloped into more compact configurations which accommodate a greater population and use existing infrastructure. New compact dwelling forms will also be more energy efficient thereby lowering energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. However, the redevelopment process uses additional energy by virtue of construction activities and the energy embodied in new building materials. This paper describes future projections for the redevelopment of an existing suburb of Adelaide, Australia and models energy consumption including embodied energy. It shows that with certain demolition and redevelopment rates, embodied energy is significant and may negate energy savings made in new energy efficient dwellings. However, there is some potential for reducing this embodied energy by a much greater use of recycled materials from demolished buildings
