Clean coal technology combustion products: properties, agricultural and environmental applications, and risk management
Future research should aim to focus more on the biological implications of CCPs addition to soil, long-term trials and a repository on ash information.
Bioinspired Fabrication of Hierarchically Structured, pH-Tunable Photonic Crystals with Unique Transition
Effects of streptococcus thermophilus TH-4 in a rat model of doxorubicin-induced mucositis
Conclusions. The minimal amelioration of doxorubicin-induced mucositis by TH-4 further supports folate production as a likely mechanism of TH-4 action against methotrexate-induced mucositis. Further studies into TH-4 are required to confirm its applicability to other conventional chemotherapy regimens.
Are meat substitutes liked better over time? A repeated in-home use test with meat substitutes or meat in meals
The overall aim of this study was to explore long-term consumer acceptance of new environmentally sustainable alternatives to meat. We investigated whether meat substitutes, which are relatively new food products, would be better appreciated after repeated consumption. Eighty-nine non-vegetarian participants joined an in-home use test and consumed one type of product with their self-selected hot meal for 20 times during 10 weeks: Quorn (meat-like), tofu (not meat-like) or a meat reference (chicken filet). Initial liking (100-mm line scale) for chicken was higher (81 ± 19) than for Quorn (60 ± 28) and tofu (68 ± 21). On a product group level, boredom occurred with all three products and after 20 exposures there were no significant differences in product liking anymore. However, there were noticeably different individual responses within the three product groups, showing both ‘boredom’ and ‘mere exposure’ patterns. Mere exposure occurred significantly more frequent with tofu, with more than half of the participants showing an increased liking over time. We also found that meal patterns were related to boredom: bored persons used more different types of meals, probably to alleviate product boredom. This study demonstrates that liking of meat substitutes can be increased by repeated exposure for a segment of consumers. In addition, it indicates that the meal context should be considered in future in-home repeated exposure studies.
What characterizes people who have an unclear classification using a treatment-based classification algorithm for low back pain? A cross-sectional study
Conclusions. People with unclear classifications appeared to be less affected by LBP (less disability and fewer fear avoidance beliefs), despite typically having a longer duration of LBP. Future studies should investigate whether modifying the algorithm to exclude such people or provide them with different interventions improves outcomes.
A Randomized-controlled Trial of Using a Book of Metaphors to Reconceptualize Pain and Decrease Catastrophizing in People With Chronic Pain
Discussion: We conclude that providing educational material through metaphor and story can assist patients to reconceptualize pain and reduce catastrophizing. Metaphor and story could be used as a precurser to other interventions that target functional capacity.
The intraplate character of supercontinent tectonics
For several decades geoscientists have recognised intraplate tectonic activity far from plate margins, both from modern and ancient examples. This apparent disconnect with the drivers of plate tectonics does not necessarily imply unconnected processes, but rather an uncertainty in understanding exactly how these systems operate. Are the driving forces derived locally or do they propagate from plate-margins? How do these forces interact with a complex tectonic inheritance to generate the observed tectonism? Furthermore, what novel approaches have been applied to understand these processes? Here we review the general literature and the contents of this special issue to develop some partial answers to these questions. Key observations include the critical importance of local lithospheric heterogeneities as a control on the mode of orogenesis, and also the role of locally derived forces from mantle upwelling or from depositing thick piles of magmatic or sedimentary rocks.
Physiotherapists systematically overestimate the amount of time stroke survivors spend engaged in active therapy rehabilitation: an observational study
Conclusion: Therapists are inaccurate in their estimation of the amount of time stroke survivors are active during therapy sessions. When accurate therapy data are required, use of objective measures is recommended.
A map of research in inventory models for perishable items from the perspective of supply chain management
This paper presents a categorization of existing studies in the area of inventory models for deteriorating items from the perspective of supply chain management (SCM). It aims to fill the gap of literature studies in this field. Existing literature studies mainly focus on deteriorating issues sueh as the deterioration type of inventories or characteristics of demand. This paper however, emphasizes on assessment the literature from the SCM view. In this context, three effects of the deterioration on inventory, namely, quantity, quality and value degradation of inventoried items across supply chain arc discussed. Then, a new framework is introduced to map studies in this field and some potential gaps for future research are identified.
