    Rating of perceived exertion during two different constant-load exercise intensities during arm cranking in paraplegic and able-bodied participants.

    This study assessed the relationship between rating of perceived exertion (RPE) and time to exhaustion during arm cranking exercise while exercising at two different constant-load exercise intensities in able-bodied and paraplegic individuals. The second aim of this study was to assess the rate of change in the RPE between the two different constant-load exercise intensities in absolute and relative terms. Ten able-bodied men and ten paraplegic men performed four exercise tests: (1) a ramp exercise test (started at 0 W and increased by 15 W min-1), (2) a graded exercise test (GXT) (started at 30 W and increased by 15 W every 2 min); these tests were performed in counterbalanced order, (3) a constant-load exercise test equal to 50% delta [i.e., the difference between the gas exchange threshold and peak power output (D)], (4) a constant-load exercise test equal to 70% D; these tests were also performed in counterbalanced order. There was a strong linear relationship between the RPE and time to exhaustion (R2 C 0.88) irrespective of exercise intensity and participants’ group. As expected, the rate of change in the RPE was significantly greater during 70% D compared to 50% D when the RPE was regressed against absolute time regardless of group. However, differences in the rate of change in the RPE were removed when the RPE was regressed against proportion of time, irrespective of group. These findings have important implications for predicting time to exhaustion while exercising at constant-load exercise intensity during arm cranking in able-bodied and paraplegic individuals.

    AFM study of the interaction of cytochrome P450 2C9 with phospholipid bilayers

    Cytochromes P450 (CYP) are key enzymes involved in the metabolism of drugs and other lipophilic xenobiotics and endogenous compounds. In this study, atomic force microscopy was applied to characterise the association of CYP2C9 to dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC) supported phospholipid bilayers. CYP2C9 was found to exclusively localise in the gel domains of partially melted DMPC bilayers. Despite lacking the N-terminus transmembrane spanning domain, the CYP2C9 protein appeared to partially embed into the membrane bilayer, as evidenced by an increase in melting temperature of surrounding phospholipids. Reversible binding of CYP2C9 via an engineered His tag to a phospholipid bilayer was facilitated using nickel-chelating lipids, presenting potential applications for biosensor technologies.

    Aquatic physical therapy for children with developmental coordination disorder: a pilot randomized controlled trial

    Aquatic therapy is an intervention for children with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) that has not been investigated formally. This was a pilot randomized controlled trial to investigate the feasibility and preliminary effectiveness of an aquatic therapy program to improve motor skills of children with DCD. Thirteen children (mean age 7 years 1 month; 10 males) with DCD were randomly allocated to receive either six sessions of aquatic therapy (once weekly session of 30 min for 6–8 weeks) or to a wait-list (control group). The intervention and measures were demonstrated to be feasible, but barriers, such as limited appointment times and accessibility, were encountered. Analysis of covariance indicated that at posttest, mean scores on the Movement Assessment Battery were higher for children who received aquatic therapy compared to those on the wait-list (p = .057). Similar trends were noted on the physical competence portion of the Pictorial Scale of Perceived Competence and Social Acceptance (p = .058). Participation levels, as measured by a parent questionnaire, showed improvement for both groups. Potential facilitators and barriers to implementation of an aquatic therapy for children with DCD are discussed.

    Review paper: the health status of migrants in Australia

    This review summarizes the findings of studies conducted in Australia between 1980 and 2008 that focused on the health status of migrants in one or more of Australia’s National Health Priority Areas (NHPAs), identifies gaps in knowledge, and suggests further research directions. Systematic literature searches were performed on CINAHL, MediText, PsycINFO, and MEDLINE. It was found that the majority of migrants enjoy better health than the Australian-born population in the conditions that are part of the NHPAs, with the exception of diabetes. Mediterranean migrants have particularly favorable health outcomes. The migrant health advantage appears to deteriorate with increasing duration of residence. Many of the analyzed studies were conducted more than 10 years ago or had a narrow focus. Little is known about the health status of migrants with respect to a number of NHPAs, including musculoskeletal conditions and asthma. The health status of recently arrived migrant groups from the Middle East and Africa has not been explored in detail.
