Impact in vocational education and training research : the case of the Australian VET research consortium

    No full text
‘Impact’ is a notion that is not very well understood in research. Within Australian higher education, it has been bandied about within such frameworks as the Research Quality Framework (RQF) and Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA). Vocational education and training (VET) research is not immune from these movements, and increasingly, VET researchers need also to be keeping a weather eye on the impact of their research. As a contribution to our understanding of impact and how it might be applied in VET research, this paper explores the notion. Following a review of relevant sources on impact, it uses as its case study evidence on the work of the Australian VET research consortium, Supporting VET providers in building capability for the future, and interprets available data within the framework of one of three potential models proposed in Australasia for the measurement of VET research impact.

In recent years there has been acceptance by the accounting professional bodies of the role of accounting in sustainability solutions, however, there is suggestion that the profession has failed to engage fully with the sustainability agenda. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to undertake a preliminary investigation into the response of accounting firm managers to demands for sustainability accounting, demonstrated through their perceptions of support from the professional bodies. The research employs a lens of institutional theory, with a focus on normative isomorphic pressures as they apply to the accounting firm and utilizes data from a larger survey of 121 firms randomly drawn from the population of accounting professionals in South Australia. Statistical results of this preliminary investigation support the notion that the professional bodies are a very strong force in the accounting firms‟ institutional environment and it is suggested that increased discourse and action will ensure the response of accountnats to the sustainability agenda is strengthened and sustained.

Prosperity up and down under: comparison of economic challenges in India and Australia

    No full text
Economic prosperity, in both developed and emerging nations, has brought with it a new scourge — economic disparity. Although the manifestations can vary in different countries, it cuts across the wide spectrum of social classes and geographic regions. Hence, it is a global phenomenon. This economic inequality has become one of the most formidable challenges to modern capitalism, resembling the Greek mythological Hydra of Lerna for governments trying to meet the basic needs of the populace. Not only the ever-present inequality, but its ever-widening reach is a major cause for concern to all countries across the economic divide. This paper looks at the economic inequality in Australia and India as these two countries represent the developed and emerging economies respectively. Both countries have adopted “pro-market reforms” for integrating into the global economy and have benefited from these. However, despite the different levels of prosperity in these two countries, neither has been able to avoid or overcome increasing inequality across economic and social classes and between their leading and lagging geographic regions.
