Co-Polar Coherence Change Matrix For Crop Monitoring
In this study, a method for generating a change matrix based on the co-polar complex coherence is proposed. This method employs the distances from the mean co-polar complex coherence (measured at each field and date) to three standard coherences predefined on the unit circle, which represent typical scattering mechanisms. The changes in the distances are interpreted as changes in scattering mechanisms between pairs of dates. The changes resulting from every possible pair of dates are arranged in matrix form, including the magnitude, direction, and type of change. Results are obtained using the L-band dataset from the ESA-funded AGRISAR 2006 campaign on three representative crops: barley, corn, and canola. This work was supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (Grant No. 2024YFF1308001) and by the European Funds for Regional Development and the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (Agencia Estatal de Investigacion, AEI) with Project PID2020-117303GB-C22/AEI/10.13039/501100011033
Liability of Management Board Members of Capital Companies in the Light of the Judgement of the CJEU of 27 February 2025 in Case C-277/24, Adjak
Pomimo korzystnego dla osób trzecich, w szczególności członków zarządu spółek kapitałowych, wyroku w sprawie Adjak, przyjęte w nim rozwiązania budzą istotne wątpliwości z perspektywy zasady pewności prawa, zwłaszcza w kontekście stabilności i ostateczności decyzji podatkowych. Wyrok w sprawie Adjak powinien być impulsem do pilnej nowelizacji obowiązujących regulacji materialnych i procesowych dotyczących solidarnej odpowiedzialności podatkowej osób trzecich. Stanowi pierwszą poważną próbę ukazania niejasnej i naruszającej prawa jednostki regulacji solidarnej odpowiedzialności podatkowej członków zarządu za zaległości podatkowe spółek kapitałowych. The subject matter presented in this article focuses on the interpretation of the EU law, in particular of Article 273 of the VAT Directive, which is covered by the judgement of 27 February 2025 delivered by the CJEU in case C-277/24, Adjak, in response to a question referred for preliminary ruling to the CJEU by the RAC in Wrocław. From the point of view of the principles governing liability of management board members for tax arrears of companies, this judgement can be considered a breakthrough. This is an extremely important issue for the tax practice both at a national and European level. Despite the fact that the judgement in the Adjak case is favourable for third parties, especially management board members of capital companies, the solutions it adopts raise significant doubts from the perspective of the principle of legal certainty, in particular in the context of the stability and finality of tax decisions. This judgement also poses a risk of procedural complexities arising from management board members questioning factual findings or legal classifications adopted in the tax assessment proceedings to which the taxpayer is subjected. The judgement in the Adjak case should be an incentive to amend urgently the applicable substantive and procedural regulations concerning the joint and several liability of third parties. This is because the judgement itself neither removes numerous controversies and incorrect practices derived from Article 116 of the Tax Ordinance, nor puts the discrepancies in the existing case law in order. It is merely the first serious attempt to shed light on an unclear regulation of joint and several liability of management board members for tax arrears of capital companies, which infringes the rights of an individual

Psychiatric Expert Evidence in Criminal Proceedings: between Scientific Complexity and Judicial Assessment
Psychiatric expert evidence occupies a place of singular importance in contemporary criminal proceedings, as it lies at the intersection between judicial assessment and medical science. Its complexity lies in the fact that it translates clinical judgements, subject to empirical uncertainty, into legal consequences that can directly affect the guilt and criminal responsibility of the accused. This paper examines the legal nature of this expertise, its procedural status and the risks arising from its potential for displacement of judgement, when the court substitutes its judgement for that of the expert. It analyses the recent reforms introduced by Organic Law 1/2025 and the role of the judge in delimiting the subject matter of the expert evidence, together with the need to strengthen the guarantees of adversarial proceedings and judicial reasoning. A model of psychiatric expertise compatible with fundamental rights and the requirements of a guarantee-based criminal process is proposed.
Using explainable AI to align pre-university profiles with bachelor’s degree success
Transitioning from pre-university studies to a bachelor’s degree can be quite challenging, as students often have to choose from a wide range of programs without knowing their academic compatibility. This lack of information can lead to poor performance or even dropout. To tackle this issue, we conducted a study at a Spanish university using machine learning (ML) algorithms on academic data from 2010 to 2022 (about 72,000 records) to develop a degree recommendation tool aligned with pre-university profiles. Our results show an average accuracy of 70% for the top 5 predictions and 90% for the top 10. Moreover, explainability techniques allowed us to identify profiles according to bachelor’s degree programs and observe relationships between pre-university subjects and chosen degrees. For example, students who take Geography in their access proofs are less likely to choose Computer Engineering, while Mathematics, English, and Physics negatively affect recommendations for Education degrees. The tool is designed to assist school counselors by providing comprehensive and accurate guidance, considering students’ academic profiles, interests, and socioeconomic factors. This is expected to improve academic performance and reduce dropout rates. Future work includes expanding the number of academic records, incorporating additional universities, and introducing new ML algorithms to enhance our results. This work has been partially funded by Intralab 2023, project IDA23 for the promotion of digital transformation at the University of Alicante
Automatic Metadata Extraction Leveraging Large Language Models in Digital Humanities
DCAT-based data ecosystems, such as open data portals and data spaces, have shown their potential to foster data economy by supporting the FAIR (Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, Reusability) principles. Nevertheless, there are domains where metadata are tailored to specific semantics of the domain, resulting in the absence of DCAT-based catalogs that adhere to FAIR principles. A particularly relevant case is that of the digital humanities, where texts encoded in TEI (Text Encoding Initiative) constitute a consolidated standard in the field of literature. However, TEI metadata are not always well aligned with the FAIR principles, nor easily integrated into interoperable catalogs that enable seamless combination with external datasets. To address this gap, our approach aims to (i) generate DCAT catalogs derived from TEI by identifying which metadata can be mapped and how, and (ii) explore the use of Large Language Models (LLMs) to assist in the generation and enrichment of metadata when transforming TEI to DCAT. Our approach contributes to catalog-level harmonization, enabling domain-specific standards such as TEI to be aligned with cross-domain standards like DCAT, thus facilitating adherence to FAIR principles. This work was funded by CLIO project (TSI-100130-2024-69), funded by Spanish Ministry of Digital Processing and by NextGeneration EU
The Relationship Between Social Networks and Study Habits Among High School Students in Encarnación, Paraguay
Given the growing influence of digital platforms transforming the educational and social dynamics of young people, this study identifies the relationship between social media usage and study habits in students of Basic Education (EEB) in Encarnación. The research was conducted in educational institutions in the city of Encarnación during 2024, using a quantitative approach. A total of 321 students from 7th to 9th grade were surveyed, with a balanced distribution between genders (51.60% male, 48.40% female) and grade levels. The study variables were: sex, school grade, social media usage, and study habits. For data analysis, SPSS v.22 was used, applying the chi-square test to assess the relationship between the variables, complemented with Cramer’s V effect size calculation. The results indicate that on weekdays, most students use social media for more than five hours daily, while a smaller proportion uses it for three to four hours. On weekends, the time spent using social media for more than five hours increases significantly, while moderate usage decreases, as reflected in the chi-square analysis (χ2 = 504.248, df = 25, p < 0.001, V = 0.56, power = 0.99). Regarding study habits, it was observed that most adolescents only review content close to exam periods, with differentiated patterns according to educational level. The statistical analysis revealed a significant association between social media usage and study habits, as indicated by the chi-square test (χ2 = 82.916, df = 30, p < 0.001, V = 0.23, power = 0.92). Future research should incorporate qualitative methodologies to delve into students’ digital interests and design pedagogical strategies that integrate social media use into the teaching-learning process, strengthening digital literacy and preparing young people for the challenges of a constantly evolving technological environment, to which the current education system does not respond
Simulation of teaching behaviours in intelligent tutoring systems: a review using large language models
Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) and allied digital platforms now constitute core infrastructure in many classrooms, where they automate formative assessment, personalise pacing and supply fine-grained analytics that would otherwise exceed human capacity. Against this backdrop, Large Language Models (LLMs) have emerged as a disruptive layer of functionality, expanding educational AI from rule-based tutoring to open-ended dialogue, generative content and real-time adaptation. Early classroom prototypes already leverage multi-agent LLM frameworks to orchestrate teacher-student and peer interactions, demonstrating richer discourse patterns and enhanced engagement when benchmarked with established observation rubrics. Most consequential, however, is the accelerating shift towards full simulation of teacher work. Emerging evidence suggests that prompting an LLM to rehearse lessons, generate reflective commentary, and iteratively revise materials can raise the quality of teaching plans to a level comparable to those crafted by expert educators. While the narrative highlights practical applications and pedagogical implications, this review is grounded in a systematic methodology combined with narrative analysis, ensuring analytical depth and thematic cohesion. This work was supported by the Prometeo programme from Conselleria de Innovación, Universidades, Ciencia y Sociedad Digital of Generalitat Valenciana (Spain) under Grant CIPROM/2021/17
