Key Predictors of Lightweight Aggregate Concrete Compressive Strength by Machine Learning from Density Parameters and Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity Testing

    No full text
Non-destructive evaluation techniques are increasingly recognised as effective alternatives to destructive testing for estimating the compressive strength of lightweight aggregate concrete (LWAC). Among these, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) is a well-established and widely employed method, characterised by its speed, non-invasiveness, and relative simplicity of implementation. In this study, an experimental dataset comprising 640 core segments from 160 cylindrical specimens, provided for analysis, was investigated. Each segment was described by physical and processing variables or features, including lightweight aggregate (LWA) and concrete densities, casting and vibration times, experimental dry density, and P-wave velocity obtained through UPV testing. A segregation index, derived from UPV measurements and defined as the ratio of local to mean P-wave velocity within each specimen, was also considered, following approaches previously suggested in the literature. A range of machine learning techniques was applied to assess the predictive capacity of local P-wave velocity and segregation index. Most ensemble-based methods and support vector regression (SVR) achieved the highest predictive performance when the segregation index was excluded, suggesting that its inclusion did not improve the predictive ability of the models. By contrast, Gaussian process regression (GPR) showed slight improvements when the segregation index was included. The results confirmed that the P-wave velocity measured by UPV testing is a reliable non-destructive predictor of compressive strength in LWAC. At the same time, the added value of the segregation index remained negligible under conditions of low segregation, as reflected by segregation index values above 0.8. These findings highlight the practical potential of integrating UPV-based measurements with data-driven modelling to enhance the reliability of concrete characterisation and quality control. This research was partially funded by MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033, grant PID2021-123627OB-C55, and by ‘ERDF A way of making Europe’

Complicit Subjectivity in Love: The Wisdom of Diotima of Mantinea, Monica of Hippo, and Elena Francis

    No full text
Relationship advice programs have long provided a megaphone for female experts in the field to offer recommendations about romantic love. One such case is Elena Francis, a purported doctor who used the radio to disseminate a discourse of moral rectitude targeting women during and after the Franco dictatorship. The archetype of expertise or wisdom in matters of love represented by Francis can be seen much earlier in female figures who were featured in texts characterized by philosophical idealism. This article traces the genealogy of an archetype of moral expertise or wisdom between these two figures and Elena Francis. It specifically aims to analyze the concept of love associated with this archetype and its features, to unravel the characteristics of the symbolism of the authority and mediation ascribed to these women, and to determine how these elements are involved in the gendered division of care. The methodology establishes links between genealogical hermeneutics and gender comparative analysis, examining the texts of the different thinkers and the recordings of three letters featured on Francis’s radio program. The conclusion identifies the continuities between the three figures and their insights into love, the links to a heteronormative model of love, the complicit nature of their subjectivity with regard to patriarchal masculinity, and the gendered division of care work.

Recent surveys of textile tools in Southern Portuguese Iron Age contexts have shown that they can be found in a variety of functional contexts. However, while the significance of such tools in domestic and religious contexts has already been discussed, the meaning of their presence in funerary settings remains to be fully explored. Ten funerary sites, ranging in date from the mid-7th to the late 3rd/early 2nd century BCE, have nonetheless yielded textile tools, with a preponderance of spindle whorls over loom weights. A critical assessment of the data from those sites shows some revealing trends regarding the functional parameters of the tools and their position in the tombs but, most importantly, the gender and status of the deceased which they accompanied. Despite the low resolution of data, a tendential association with female burials can be posited, and at least some instances of textile tools in relatively high-status tombs can be noted. However, these funerary assemblages offer little to no evidence of craft specialization. These trends can usefully be compared to the available explanatory hypotheses put forward to account for the deposition of textile tools in tombs. Such an exercise suggests a complex, multi-layered meaning for these objects, which encapsulate ideas about gender norms, gendered practices, status, and most likely also religious beliefs. This work was financed by Portuguese funds through FCT-Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia in the framework of the project 2023.13050.PEX: TransTexTec - Exploring transitions in textile technologies and economies in the long second millennium BCE (2200-700 BCE): the southern Portuguese territory as a case study (https://doi.org/10.54499/2023.13050.PEX) and the projects UIDB/00698/2020 (https://doi.org/10.54499/UIDB/00698/2020) and UIDP/00698/2020 (https://doi.org/10.54499/UIDP/00698/2020). Towards Accurate Reference Values for Heart Rate and Speed Zones by Aerobic Fitness and Sex in Long-Distance Runners

    No full text
Background: This study aimed to provide reference values for estimating training intensities in long-distance runners based on progressive incremental tests, considering differences related to sex and performance level. Methods: A total of 1411 endurance-trained runners (819 men and 592 women) completed a standardized treadmill protocol with gas exchange analysis to determine ventilatory thresholds and peak oxygen consumption (VO2peak). Heart rate (HR) and running speed at each threshold were expressed relative to their peak values. Results: HR at second ventilatory threshold (VT2) occurred at 93.5 ± 2.5% of HR peak, and HR at first ventilatory threshold at 85.1 ± 4.6%. The relative running speeds at VT2 and VT1 corresponded to 87.6 ± 3.9% and 73.9 ± 5.5% of the speed at VO2peak, respectively. In men, beginners exhibited higher relative HR and VO2 values at the ventilatory thresholds than elite runners. In contrast, women displayed higher and more stable relative values across performance levels. Conclusions: These findings establish precise, evidence-based reference ranges derived from a large cohort of runners and highlight the need to consider sex and performance level when estimating exercise intensities. Individualized physiological assessment remains essential for accurate training prescription and performance optimization

Speech acts and hate speech: a view from the contemporary law

This paper aims to show how speech act theory provides analytical categories that allow for an understanding of different traditions concerning the need to regulate or not hate speech. To this end, an analytical methodology is adopted that articulates the theoretical review of philosophical and linguistic sources with the examination of normative instruments and jurisprudence. Libertarian rhetoric holds that discriminatory and offensive expressions should not be regulated, or should be regulated in extreme cases, such as when they pose a danger of imminent unlawful action. This position is based on a series of linguistic assumptions about communication, which have been criticized by various proponents of speech act theory. Classical liberalism admits certain forms of regulation, focusing on aspects related to the perlocutionary facet of utterances, that is, the consequences produced by discriminatory expressions, such as undermining human dignity, understood as a fundamental good. The neo-republican perspective, on the other hand, based on Rae Langton’s theory of subordination, which also draws from speech act theory, offers an innovative view by considering that the harm of hate speech must be explained in terms of its illocutionary dimension, that is, the concrete actions performed through such speech, such as legitimizing structural relations of subordination by reinforcing asymmetries and historical injustices. The different perspectives are illustrated by appealing to various normative instruments and judicial decisions at both international and national levels (declarations, treaties, laws, and court rulings). The analysis concludes by reaffirming the performative power of language, showing that hate speeches are not merely offensive expressions, but acts that, in themselves, subordinate and legitimize inequality, thus dismantling the fallacious distinction between speaking and doing

Shaping Socio-Functional Urban Identity: High Streets, Social Media Data, and the Legacy of Abercrombie’s Functional Bubbles

    No full text
Understanding the complexity of today’s urban environments demands analytical frameworks capable of capturing how spatial form and social activity intertwine to produce meaningful urban units. Building on Abercrombie and Forshaw’s functional analysis of London, our study revisits the concept of neighbourhood as a unit of identity and function and develops a computational approach to identify socio-functional units, its boundaries, and its centres of activity. This novel methodology integrates morphological characteristics along with geotagged social and economic activity data from Foursquare. The method builds upon the MomePy Python library to generate tessellations: spatial units containing both form-based and activity indexes. These indexes are normalized and clustered using a k-means algorithm, resulting in the identification of coherent socio-functional areas, often structured around high streets or central plazas. Tested across 29 cities in Southern Europe, the method proves effective in capturing meaningful spatial patterns that transcend morphological homogeneity, offering refined insights into commercial centrality, functional specialisation, and suburban configurations. Crucially, the analysis reveals the way specific socio-functional identities emerge even within morphologically uniform fabrics, highlighting the value of combining physical and social data sources. While certain limitations remain —particularly related to the resolution and consistency of the open-source morphological data— the approach offers a transferable and scalable tool for identifying urban units rooted in actual use and experience. Beyond its technical contribution, the study revisits disciplinary traditions to offer a contemporary analytical lens, providing planners and urbanists with valuable insights for neighbourhood-based planning. This research has been funded by the Generalitat Valenciana, Regional Ministry of Innovation, Universities, Science and Digital Society, under the project Vulnerability and Resilience: Regeneration Strategies for the City’s Economic Fabric Characterised with Geolocated Social Media Data" (ref.
