Unveiling the long-term cascading effects of the 2018 Baige landslide and subsequent outburst flood with satellite radar observations
Landslide-dammed lakes (LDL) and landslide lake outburst flood (LLOF) can significantly alter the kinematic behavior of upstream and downstream landslides, posing severe threats to human life and infrastructure. However, the long-term impacts of LDL and LLOF on surrounding landslide stability remain poorly understood. In this study, we systematically examine the cascading effects triggered by the 2018 Baige LDL and LLOF on adjacent landslides, based on time series interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) analysis of 1437 satellite radar images. Unlike previous studies that focused on individual landslides or localized areas, we developed an automated method to detect the onset of landslide acceleration, leading to the establishment of an inventory of 65 accelerated landslides (ALs) and a quantitative evaluation of their controlling factors. Our results show that approximately 30 % of the flood-affected active landslides changed their deformation mechanisms, which can be categorized into five distinct types. Among the landslides accelerated by the Baige event, 43 % exhibited persistent acceleration, whereas 57 % showed signs of self-recovery. For the latter, deformation velocity typically decayed by 90 % within an average of 9.3 years after the outburst, returning to near pre-event levels. Furthermore, compared to 378 flood-involved but non-ALs, ALs preferentially occur on gentler slopes and in areas with lower vegetation cover. More notably, those ALs generally experienced greater flood depth, higher flow velocity, and stronger flood power. This study is the first to assess the long-lasting cascading effects of LDL and LLOF on creep landslides. These findings advance our understanding of LDL and LLOF-induced landslide mechanisms and offer valuable insights for the long-term risk assessment and geohazard mitigation of landslide-prone regions affected by similar cascading processes. This research was funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (Ref. 41941019), the Shaanxi Province Geoscience Big Data and Geohazard Prevention Innovation Team (2022), the Generic Technical Development Platform of Shaanxi Province for Imaging Geodesy (2024ZG-GXPT-07), the Conselleria de Innovación, Universidades, Ciencia y Sociedad Digital in the framework of Project CIAICO/2021/335, the ESA-MOST China DRAGON-6 project (Grant No. 95355) and by the funding scheme of the European Commission, Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Staff Exchanges in the frame of the project UPGRADE – GA 101131146

Modification and variation in the Italian phraseological unit essere fuori come un balcone: a study based on a corpus query
This study deals with phraseological modification and variation. More specifically, the Italian phraseological unit (PU) essere fuori come un balcone, which refers to people with impaired mental faculties, is considered and the corpus Italian Web 2020 is consulted to collect expressions with the same structure essere (or other verb of state or change) fuori come + nominal component. Once they are collected, a distinction is made between variants (formulations that derive from the manipulation of a PU and with a certain degree of frequency of use and lexicalisation) and modifications (non-lexicalised formulations that derive from an original manipulation of a PU). As a first step, a quantitative analysis is carried out in order to identify the expressions which occur most frequently and could be classified as variants (11 detected). A qualitative examination is then realised with the aim of identifying possible limits of the quantitative analysis (e.g. repeated cases or expressions based on semantically interchangeable nouns that belong to different linguistic varieties and that show a certain conventionality of use). This examination shows that 8 expressions can certainly be classified as variants and 5 are difficult to classify. The qualitative observations provide an opportunity to reflect on the difficulty of establishing clear boundaries between variants and modifications, as well as to consider the conceptual dimension of the expressions collected also from a communicative and translational point of view. As a matter of fact, the expressions involved are mainly based on the same conceptual metaphor that associates the lack of sanity with the spatial relationship inside-outside: this means that the core of all of them is conventionalised and lexicalised. This aspect influences in some way the cognitive and evocative dimension of the receiver. The study also shows the instability of the language and its phraseological dimension. This is due, on the one hand, to the possible evolution of certain expressions that occur infrequently in the corpus which, over time, could undergo a process of further lexicalisation or become free uses and, on the other hand, to the subjectivity with which certain uses, depending on the context and the interlocutors, could be considered as more or less lexicalised. The study motivates to conduct further research not only with the aim of resolving doubts about alternative expressions detected in the corpus that are difficult to classify, but also to go deeper into linguistic and conceptual aspects of phraseological variation and modification
End-to-End Full-Page Optical Music Recognition for Pianoform Sheet Music
Optical Music Recognition (OMR) has made significant progress since its inception, with various approaches now capable of accurately transcribing music scores into digital formats. Despite these advancements, most so-called end-to-end OMR approaches still rely on multi-stage processing pipelines for transcribing full-page score images, which entails challenges such as the need for dedicated layout analysis and specific annotated data, thereby limiting the general applicability of such methods. In this paper, we present the first truly end-to-end approach for page-level OMR in complex layouts. Our system, which combines convolutional layers with autoregressive Transformers, processes an entire music score page and outputs a complete transcription in a music encoding format. This is made possible by both the architecture and the training procedure, which utilizes curriculum learning through incremental synthetic data generation. We evaluate the proposed system using pianoform corpora, which is one of the most complex sources in the OMR literature. This evaluation is conducted first in a controlled scenario with synthetic data, and subsequently against two real-world corpora of varying conditions. Our approach is compared with leading commercial OMR software. The results demonstrate that our system not only successfully transcribes full-page music scores but also outperforms the commercial tool in both zero-shot settings and after fine-tuning with the target domain, representing a significant contribution to the field of OMR.The first author is supported by grants ACIF/2021/356 and CIBEFP/2022/19 from the “Programa I+D+i de la Generalitat Valenciana”. Memory and Masculinities in Spanish Enlightened Reformism: The Presentist Debate on National Effeminisation
This work addresses, from a gender perspective, the study of the uses of the past by the enlightened reformist elite in eighteenth-century Spain. These authors, so inclined to reflect on the national past in order to draw moral lessons, tended to frame their recollections of previous periods and figures in terms of virility and effeminacy, projecting their present anxieties about new forms of sociability. Behind the criticism of luxury, fashion and the figure of the cortejo or currutaco lay an emerging crisis of masculinity that was transferred to more or less remote times. The 18th century was also the century in which enlightened reformism established a national canon, constructed in parallel with this same virile/effeminate dialectic that would be inherited by contemporary Spain. Children’s Rights in Latin American Children’s Literature: a Proposal for Primary Education
This study focuses on the analysis of various works of Latin American children’s literature with the aim of creating a corpus of readings that contributes to raising awareness among pupils across the three cycles of Primary Education regarding Children’s Rights. The criteria established by Cerrillo (2007) are used as a reference for the selection of readings, thus ensuring their pedagogical relevance and literary value. Similarly, Children’s Rights are organised into ten thematic blocks in order to be addressed in greater depth. Within this framework, four works of different types are proposed for each educational cycle, taking into account their aesthetic-literary qualities and their potential to foster critical reflection. The results show that the selected corpus possesses notable aesthetic and literary value, while also enabling the development of students’ sensitivity to situations related to the violation of Children’s Rights. In this way, the analysed works constitute a high-quality resource for integrating rights education into the Primary Education curriculum, promoting both reading and social awareness simultaneously
Rafael Altamira and economic modernization: «national character» and customary institutions
Rafael Altamira (1866-1951) was one of the most outstanding and multifaceted intellectuals of the so-called Silver Age. His work has been studied from many different perspectives but has not received specific attention from an economic point of view. This perspective is relevant because Altamira’s links with regenerationism and Krausism led him to take an interest in the modernization of the country from a reformist orientation and with special interest in social issues. The specific objective of this work is to show that Altamira’s analysis of two important issues in his intellectual career, the «national character» and institutions based on custom, had clear economic significance, as he ultimately sought to examine whether they could constitute an obstacle to the country’s material progress. In this regard, he denied that the features of the «national character» were incompatible with a modern economy, and he also defended the validity of economic institutions such as communal property or local irrigation water markets, anticipating some later approaches of institutional economics
Assessing the impact of visitors on airborne particle deposition in the Giant Gypsum Geode of Pulpí (SE Spain)
The Giant Geode of Pulpí is a unique mineralogical phenomenon worldwide, remarkable for its large selenite gypsum crystals. Its recent development as a tourist site and inclusion on UNESCO’s Tentative World Heritage List, highlight the need to assess the impact of visits on its conservation. This study investigates airborne particle dynamics inside the Geode, focusing on tourist activity and natural ventilation. We measured deposition rates and composition of airborne particles using passive traps and a continuous laser-optical particle counter. Microenvironmental variables linked to ventilation, such as temperature and radon gas concentration (²²²Rn), were simultaneously monitored. Results show a predominance of fine particles (μm), which remain suspended longer and penetrate deeper into the cavity. Coarse particles (>5 μm) settle quickly, mainly near the Geode entrance. Chemically, most particles correspond to autochthonous mine minerals (celestine, siderite, quartz, and gypsum), though allochthonous materials such as non-mineral fibers introduced by visitors were also identified. Natural ventilation strongly influences particle behavior. Fine particle concentrations (μm) rise (i.e., up 30×103 particles/L) when the renewal of air with the exterior, characterized by lower suspended particle concentrations, is restricted. Under these conditions, the particle remobilization induced by visitors causes a higher accumulative effect of fine particles in the mine-Geode atmosphere. Autochthonous mining debris and dust is the main source of coarse particles, with concentrations peaking during visiting hours due to resuspension by tourist movement, up to 2,000 particles/Lfor 5-10 mm particles and up to 400 particles/L for >10 mm. These findings provide a foundation for preventive conservation strategies. Adapting visitor pathways and access protocols could reduce particle resuspension and deposition, helping preserve the exceptional crystals of the Geode of Pulpí for future generations. This study was funded by project PID2021- 123980OA-I00 (GYPCLIMATE), of the Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación of Spain, the Agencia Estatal de Investigación and the Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional FEDER.
