Faszination, Irritation und ästhetischer Eigensinn. Zu einer Geschichte der Interpretationen von Hölderlins «Hälfte des Lebens»
Since its first printing, Hölderlin’s probably most famous poem Hälfte des Lebens has challenged its recipients. The history of interpretation and the interpretative offers concerning the title and the blank space between the two stanzas not only offer different concepts of meaning, but also sketch a changed understanding of Hölderlin’s authorship, showing that Hölderlin’s text still forces us to think about what constitutes modern poetry
From Beethoven to Schoenberg: The Micro-Myths of Viennese Classicism and Viennese Modernism in Thomas Mann’s ‘Doktor Faustus’
A misreading of Thomas Mann’s Doktor Faustus as a simple allegory lies at the heart of the controversy surrounding Mann’s use of Arnold Schoenberg’s music as a demonically inspired fascist aesthetic. If we look upon Schoenberg’s music as a micro-myth, intersecting and interacting with a counterpart myth, namely Viennese Classicism, then a different picture emerges. This article will take a closer look at the construction and interplay between the micro-myths of Viennese Modernism and Viennese Classicism in Mann’s novel. The article seeks to clarify the use of atonality vs. tonality in the myth-building process and to shed more light on the Mann-Schoenberg controversy

Zwischen Romantik-Kritik und «Horen»-Kontinuität. Hölderlins «Iduna»-Projekt im Spektrum zeitgenössischer Zeitschriften
In the summer of 1799 Friedrich Hölderlin worked intensively on the «Iduna»-project, a «humanistic journal» which was intended to earn him prestige and a steady income. As the difficulties increased and important authors declined his invitation to contribute, the enterprise was abandoned. Based on Hölderlin’s letters and drafts, this essay focuses on the program of «Iduna» with the aim of embedding it within the context of contemporary journals at a time of great changes in society, the editorial world, and reading interests. A comparison with the most significant literary journals of the time («Die Horen», «Propyläen», «Athenaeum») not only shows striking similarities with «Die Horen», but also helps to explain why this project was doomed to failure
Natura, poesia e filosofia in Hölderlin e in Hegel
The study addresses essential aspects of the works of Hölderlin and Hegel, highlighting the affinities and differences between the two with regard to their approach to pantheism, the question of beauty and the concept of ‘truth as a whole’. The essay also investigates differences and similarities in their interpretation of Heraclitus and the One-All, their conception of the tragic, their approach to the relationship between man and nature, and their aspiration for a genuine cultural, ethical, and political revolution. Finally, the essay delves into the differences between Hegel’s ‘logic’ and Hölderlin’s ‘poetic logic’, as well as the different paths the two great authors followed in their shared love for ‘free truth’
Zarte Fügung. Hölderlins Rhythmen der Erinnerung
After 1801, Hölderlin’s poetry changed considerably through the reworking of earlier poems and the development of a major new project which would, however, remain fragmentary. Hölderlin experienced the political and military failure of revolution in his time . From his perspective, the spirit is filled with what most people ‘hope for’, but also what they do not expect: «Nicht daß irgend eine Form, irgend eine Meinung und Behauptung siegen wird […]». The modern world (hesperischer Orbis) and the current revolution have given rise to great change, even destruction, but also created new relationships and possibilities that have yet to be understood and expressed. Hölderlin explores the ambivalence of this new world both in the extensive fragments of Das Nächste Beste and in the perfectly accomplished poem Andenken. The poetic rhythm of memory resonates with that ambivalence and, at the same time, leads to the revelation of the forgotten origin of all things (das Ursprüngliche). The enduring realisation of the «vaterländische Umkehr» can only be achieved through the intimate appropriation of this rhythm

Ilse Aichinger e Ingeborg Bachmann protagoniste della (ri)nascita del radiodramma dopo il 1945: i casi di ‘Knöpfe’ e ‘Ein Geschäft mit Träumen’: [Ilse Aichinger and Ingeborg Bachmann as protagonists of the (re)birth of radio drama after 1945: the cases of ‘Knöpfe’ and ‘Ein Geschäft mit Träumen’]
This article aims to explore the pivotal role of radio drama within the German and Austrian cultural landscape, especially after World War II. Through a comparative and (inter)textual analysis of two central works – Knöpfe (1953) by Ilse Aichinger and Ein Geschäft mit Träumen (1952) by Ingeborg Bachmann – the study traces the origin, development, and impact of this literary genre on the cultural discourse of the post-war context. Additionally, it illustrates the relevance of their common themes in the light of the personal and artistic relationships of the two writers
«O Natur!» Hölderlins erste Liebe oder Was Ökologie bedeuten könnte
The international research on Hölderlin has certainly not overlooked how much Hölderlin’s entire poetry and thinking revolves around nature. Therefore, his efforts, so diverse in themselves, to understand what ‘nature’ actually means to us, appear highly relevant in the face of the currently emerging ecological crisis. This article aims to present a specific interpretive framework using the model of permeable concentric circles in which the various phases of Hölderlin’s conceptions of nature do not cancel each other out, but remain valid and insightful simultaneously, rather than mutually exclusive
