Faith and Modernity: Navigating the Intersection of Islam, Secularism, and International Relations in Contemporary Turkish Society
This research investigates the intricate relationship between Islam, secularism, and international relations in contemporary Turkish society, focusing on how these dynamics shape social norms, values, and Turkey's global engagements. Positioned as a predominantly Muslim nation with a secular constitution, Turkey offers a unique context for examining the influence of religious and secular forces on both domestic life and foreign policy. This qualitative study employs an analytical framework that integrates realist and constructivist perspectives, allowing for a comprehensive exploration of religious authorities, cultural expressions of faith, gender roles, political Islam, economic activities, and interfaith relations. The findings reveal that Islam significantly shapes social and cultural practices in Turkey, creating a complex interplay with the country's secular policies. This dynamic also extends to Turkey's foreign policy, where religious and secular considerations influence its diplomatic strategies and international image. The study concludes that understanding this balance is crucial for comprehending Turkey's domestic and global actions, particularly as they navigate geopolitical tensions and alliances. This research contributes to the broader discourse on the interaction between religion and state, offering insights into how Turkey's approach to Islam and secularism provides insights that could be relevant to other nations facing similar challenges. The conclusions drawn underscore the importance of maintaining a nuanced perspective on the coexistence of faith and modernity in shaping national identity and international relations
Epistemology of Pundhen Telaga Sarangan: A Study of Sacred Rites as Cultural Identity in Magetan, Indonesia
This qualitative research tried to look at the origin of Pundhen Telaga Serangan as the epistemology of Islamic studies and the systematic transformation process of local tradition into cultural identity. Pundhen, in Javanese philosophy, has sacred meaning and magical power. Indonesians have a unique way of honouring and respecting their history. One of them is by performing rituals. Ancestors carried out the oldest practice for generations, and it became a custom. This paper uses qualitative methods, where the data collection techniques include interviews, documentation, and data qualification. Moreover, the Sarangan community in Magetan Regency is the object of this study because they have experienced cultural transformation. J.G. Frazer and E.B. Taylor's animistic and magic theory become analytical tools in seeing the extent of the meaning of Pundhen ontologically and epistemologically. Furthermore, Rudolf Bultmann's hermeneutical approach will serve as a valuable addition to the comprehensive analysis of this research. The results section of this research paper shows that Pundhen Telaga Sarangan is a symbol of spirituality. It is a sacred place for the locals to establish interpersonal relationships with God, ancestors, and spirits (the others)
Symbolic and Philosophical Meanings of Religion and Politics in Hamzanwadi's Wasiat Renungan Masa Pengalaman Baru: A Semiotic Perspective
This study aims to uncover the symbolic and philosophical meanings of religion and politics in Hamzanwadi's Wasiat Renungan Masa Pengalaman Baru. This research employs qualitative methods with a semiotic approach in analysing the poem's verses containing religious and political symbolism. Data collection involved close reading, interpretation, and in-depth understanding of the verses, while semiotic analysis was applied to identify and examine the symbols and their philosophical meanings. Several steps in data validation include reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results reveal that Hamzanwadi employs religious and political symbols in his poem to convey moral and social messages. Religious symbols—such as faith, piety, and the concept of the Almighty God—highlight the importance of loyalty and commitment to religious values in political life. Political symbols—such as seats and positions—represent political ambitions that can threaten religious teachings' integrity and true purpose. The philosophy embedded in these symbols emphasises the significance of loyalty, integrity, and honesty in politics and warns against using religion for personal or political gain. This research offers key insights into three main points: 1) faith and piety serve as a solid moral foundation for ethics inpolitical life; 2) political ambition and power have the potential to corrupt religious values and undermine integrity; and 3) integrity and adherence to religious teachings are essential for promoting clean and responsible governance. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the interaction between religion and politics in Hamzanwadi's workand offerbroader reflections on ethical leadership
The Challenges of Gender Equality and Women's Rights in Yemen: A Sociological Survey
The study explores the complicated issues of women's rights and gender equality in Yemen, a nation whose deeply ingrained cultural norms and patriarchal standards limit women's participation in public life and sustain economic inequality. It seeks to advance the conversation on gender equality worldwide by offering a comprehensive analysis of the Yemeni environment and suggesting future directions for development. Using a mixed-methods approach that includes a theoretical analysis, a literature study, and an across-sectional sociological survey, the research examines gender systems locally and globally. It evaluates Yemen's women's rights situation. Results reveal a generational gap in knowledge of gender rights, with younger respondents being more informed than older generations, who were more influenced by conventional standards. Gender discrimination endures despite advancements in healthcare and education, with issues of pay inequality and violence against women being significant concerns. The report highlights the main obstacles to gender equality as patriarchal attitudes, economic inequalities, difficulties in education and the workplace, and widespread violence against women. The goal of improving women's political representation ends by promoting the creation of a Gender Equality Commission, encouraging female entrepreneurship, questioning patriarchal conventions, and putting affirmative action laws into place. It emphasises the importance of continual research and observation to evaluate how well these policies promote social justice in Yemen
Psychography of Terrorist Religiosity: A Case Study in East Java
Based on the psychographic theory of Glock and Stark, this study tries to provide more information about the terrorist's religiosity in the context of a suicide bombing in East Java, Indonesia. To understand the theological state of terrorists who commit suicide bombings in the name of jihad, this research takes a psychological approach. Through later suicide bombings, which frequently occur, this research uses qualitative techniques to paint a picture of the dimensions of religiosity that terrorists possess. The Surabaya suicide bombings in East Java are used as a case study in this paper. The researcher uses psychographic theories of religion, which encompass ideological, ritualistic, intellectualistic, experiential, and consequential elements, to evaluate the religious dimensions of terrorists. This study demonstrates that a terrorist's religiosity can be characterised as having only conceptual, ceremonial, and intellectualistic aspects; the experiential and consequential aspects are not evident in the terrorist's attitude or personality
Toward a Mutual Change of Religion and Urban Space: A Comparative Perspective
From a historical perspective, cities have served as more than mere locations where religious practices are observed; they have consistently exhibited an elevated level of historical documentation. The claim advanced here is that the interrelationship between religious change and urban development necessitates thorough analysis. It is imperative to critically examine the significant developments in local and trans-local religions, particularly emphasising their distinct urban contextual factors. At the same time, such urban conditions, the practices, and discourse that shape the understanding of these conditions as urban are not independent variables in the study of religious change. Rather, they are influenced by religious practices and individuals, thereby forming a reciprocal relationship. The choice of areas is an assumption that the pertinent aspect in establishing a connection is the spatial character of religious practices and ideas and their material manifestation in physical space. The article concisely examines various aspects related to the transformation of urban spaces and religious practices. These include the process of monumentalising urban areas and gods, the public display and the articulation of communication with God and gods, the imaginative and widespread utilisation of scripture in religious activities and thought, the increasing division of labour and professionalisation, the emergence of individual urban actors who are not solely defined by their ancestral lineage, the formation of religious groups, the religious organisation of time and the influence of temporal concepts on religious ideas and practices, and lastly, the conceptualisation of alternatives to urban life through the religious exaggeration of rural and natural environments. Such a cursory review of religious changes in urban settings and their impact on urbanism does not yield any definitive assertions on these developments. However, the collective evidence confirms the effectiveness of the presented approach
Partial Reality in Local Modern Indonesia: Interethnic Marriage Preferences among Young Minangkabau Migrants in Yogyakarta
The preference for same-ethnic marriage in Minangkabau society is an ideal marriage pattern to preserve customs and traditions in the customary marriage system. This preference changes when juxtaposed with the tradition of migration by the Minangkabau society, which influences other preferences (interethnic) in the customary marriage system. This research explores interethnic marriage preferences among young Minangkabau migrants in Yogyakarta, an area with cross-cultural characteristics. This research hypothesises that migration influences interethnic marriage preferences among young Minangkabau migrants in Yogyakarta. This research utilises a quantitative-explanative method, and data were collected through a Likert scale questionnaire and literature on Minangkabau marriage culture and traditions. The research involved 100 single Minangkabau migrants aged 19-24 in Yogyakarta as respondents April 20, 2024, to May 6, 2024. Simple linear regression analysis and social reality construction were used as data analysis techniques. The results showed a significant influence of migration on interethnic marriage preferences among young Minangkabau migrants in Yogyakarta, with a regression coefficient of 0.307 and a significance level of 0.002 (p < 0.050). This finding indicates that an increase in the migration variable correlates with an increase in interethnic marriage preference (dependent variable). In terms of social reality, this finding shows the emergence of a partial reality in customary marriage preferences resulting from secondary socialisation internalised by young Minangkabau migrants in Yogyakarta
De-radicalization through Social Media: Social Media Literacy in Countering Terrorism in Indonesia
In Indonesia, the rise of radicalism in the digital age has facilitated the spread of radical movements, particularly across social media networks. Radicalism has manifested in physical violence, often resulting in significant human casualties. This research investigates how internet media influences public literacy in countering terrorism in Indonesia. This study uses discourse analysis to examine secondary data from social media content on Twitter, Instagram, and online news sources concerning counter-radicalism and anti-terrorism efforts. These data sources are selected based on the premise that Internet media is a primary communication tool for disseminating public discourse. Additionally, the National Counter Terrorism Agency (NCTA), as a governmental body, plays a critical role in combating terrorism in Indonesia. The findings reveal that social media effectively enhances public literacy on radicalism and terrorism. Moreover, NCTA's initiatives have successfully mobilised community engagement against terrorism and radicalism in the public sphere. This research demonstrates that NCTA can significantly advance de-radicalisation efforts through the strategic use of internet media. NCTA's socialisation and de-radicalisation programs serve as crucial preventive measures against terrorism in Indonesia
Javanese Culture and Its Actualisation within Christian Faith: Study in the Gereja Kristen Jawi Wetan
In the East Java region, a Christian sect known as the Gereja Kristen Jawi Wetan exists. This particular sect incorporates Javanese cultural traditions into its worship rites. However, most religious communities believe they should not merge between culture and spiritual activities, as they consider them distinct and separate components. In this study, the researcher aims to accurately comprehend the significance of Javanese culture in executing worship rituals by the Gereja Kristen Jawi Wetan congregation. Integrating Javanese culture into these rituals is believed to enhance the congregation's faith. This study employs a qualitative-anthropological methodology to address the research inquiry by examining objects that have served as conduits to the supernatural, stemming from established societal practices. The researcher gathered data by employing interview procedures with multiple congregations and pastors and through direct observation. This interview ensured that the gained data aligned with the researcher's theory regarding the potential growth in faith resulting from the merger with Javanese culture. This study demonstrates the compatibility and integration of Christianity and Javanese culture without any discernible division. Conversely, the establishment of the Gereja Kristen Jawi Wetan provides a refuge for Javanese individuals who wish to maintain their cultural practices during religious ceremonies. This research inferred that the Gereja Kristen Jawi Wetan utilises Javanese culture to transmit religious values to the congregation. This strategy ensures that the adherents accept and absorb the teaching easily, enhancing the congregation's faith. Importantly, this spiritual practice recognises the cultural traditions deeply ingrained within the congregation
