Barriers to Mental Health Support Among Syrian Men in Sweden An Exploratory Study of Challenges Faced by Syrian Refugees (2014–2018) in Accessing Mental Health Support and Suicide Prevention
This study explores the barriers that Syrian refugee men in Sweden face when seeking psychological support. Using qualitative, semi-structured interviews with eight participants and thematic analysis, five key themes were identified: a sense of not belonging, lack of continuity in care, emotional silence shaped by masculinity norms, linguistic and institutional obstacles, and the role of religion as a coping mechanism. The findings reveal that these barriers are not isolated but deeply interconnected within a system of emotional, cultural, and structural exclusion. The study draws on the Health Belief Model, Acculturation Theory, and sociological perspectives on masculinity and emotion to show how stigma, power, and affective marginalization shape how and whether support is sought. It highlights the urgent need for mental health systems that are not only culturally competent but emotionally attuned. Ultimately, the study emphasizes that access to care is not only about resources, but about recognition, trust, and the right to vulnerability. This study explores the barriers that Syrian refugee men in Sweden face when seeking psychological support. INTEGRATING EDUCATION FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN ORGANISATIONAL LEARNING: A CONTENT ANALYSIS OF COMMUNITY PROGRAMS OF TWO CORPORATIONS IN SWEDEN
Aim:
This study analyses how Swedish multinationals IKEA and Volvo embed sustainability in
their corporate strategies through community programs, focusing on collaborative strategybuilding, knowledge sharing, and positive social and economic impact.
Theory:
The study applies Education and Sustainable Development (ESD), Actor Network Theory
(ANT), and Community of Practice (CoP) frameworks to explore how sustainability is
integrated into organisational learning and community programs. ESD views sustainability
education as participatory knowledge sharing; ANT examines networks of human and nonhuman actors; CoP focuses on collective learning in communities. Combined, these helps
analyse how IKEA and Volvo operationalise sustainability aligned with Sustainability
Development Goals (SDGs).
Method:
Using a comparative case study approach, the research analyses IKEA and Volvo’s 2022–
2024 sustainability reports through manifest and latent content analysis. Thematic coding
focused on concepts like community programs, network building, and SDG alignment. AIassisted scanning together with manual review was used to achieve rigor in coding and
thematizing document data in line with the research questions.
Results:
IKEA and Volvo both integrate sustainability into their community programs, but with distinct
approaches. IKEA focuses on social equity, human rights, and inclusion, aiding vulnerable
groups through social entrepreneurship and partnerships with organisations. Volvo prioritises
governance, education, vocational training, and supply chain sustainability through formal
stakeholder dialogues. Both companies align with SDGs, including quality education, gender
equality, decent work, and reduced inequalities. Challenges include knowledge sharing
barriers, cultural differences, and transparency. Recommendations involve improving
inclusion, formalising boundary spanners, integrating behavioural science, and addressing
emerging issues like digital ethics and climate resilience
Juxtaposition, Form and Intervals of Meaning : Essayistic Montage in Lucky People Center International (1998)
This thesis examines Lucky People Center International (Erik Pauser and Johan Söderberg, 1998) through the lens of the audiovisual essay, focusing particularly on montage, fragmentation and non-verbal thought. Rather than viewing the film as a conventional documentary, this study analyses it as an essayistic film, drawing on theoretical frameworks from Theodor W. Adorno, Dziga Vertov, Gilles Deleuze and Laura Rascaroli. The analysis identifies key essayistic strategies in the film's construct, such as juxtaposition, sonic interstice and visual rhythm, and explores how meaning emerges not through narrative synthesis but through disjunctive, dialectical relations between sound, image and voice. Particular attention is given to how the film handles spatiality, archival material and poetic argumentation. The argument of the thesis is that a form of cinematic thinking that privileges ambiguity, multiplicity, and fragmentation as productive conditions for audiovisual thought is exemplified by Lucky People Center International
FACING LEGAL UNCERTAINTY IN INFORMATION SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT: The role of the project team in achieving compliance
With the growing use of personal data, laws and regulations aim to ensure privacy
to the user, especially within information systems (IS). These regulations can be difficult
to put into practice by developers and so previous research has aimed to use
frameworks using privacy by design (PbD) principles to help developers make compliant
IS. However, past literature has not focused on the project team at large and
their capabilities when faced with legal uncertainty that poses unclear, uncertain
requirements, and need for context specific solutions.
This study follows a qualitative research approach through a case study based on
document analysis and semi-structured interviews with eight participants involved
in the digitalisation of the Swedish national tests at Skolverket (the Swedish National
Agency of Education). During the development, Skolverket were faced with
dealing with the Schrems II ruling, a ruling which created legal uncertainty regarding
the processing of personal data. A thematic analysis was conducted to identify
key patterns and insights related to agile practices and knowledge sharing when
dealing with the ruling. The findings show how external collaboration, engagement
with the stakeholder and collaboration between expert roles ensured compliance.
The project team had a process-oriented focus where they contextualised the problem
involving a social aspect. The study has shown that existing PbD frameworks
lack the socio-technical view of compliance, and that through the inclusion of organisational
capabilities like agile practices, external collaboration and effective
knowledge sharing, project teams can face legal uncertainty
Confusion about evolution.
Both students and biology teachers face challenges in teaching evolution due to complex concepts and connections. Students' understanding of evolutionary theory can be hindered by individual interpretations leading to misconceptions about key evolutionary concepts. This thesis is a scientific literature review that examines what misconceptions secondary school pupils have about the theory of evolution and identifies teaching strategies that can help teachers address these misconceptions. The literature review is based on systematic searches of the ERC (Education Research Complete) and ERIC databases. The selected articles are peer-reviewed studies that have conducted research in the same area. According to the results of this study, misconceptions about teleological and Lamarckian thinking have been most frequent, with students holding the belief that evolution has a purpose or that individuals adapt through their own efforts. There have also been misconceptions about evolutionary concepts, such as natural selection, fitness, mutation and variation. Teaching strategies identified in this study have proved useful in addressing these misconceptions. For example, comparisons between scientific and everyday meanings of concepts can clarify evolutionary concepts. Addressing the common misconceptions that other students have had, as well as leading the lessons with interactive and role-playing activities, has been shown to promote students' understanding. This work can make a meaningful contribution to both current and future biology teachers by conveying student misconceptions and providing inspiration for teaching strategies that can improve the teaching of evolution
problemlösning i undervisningen.
Beyond HR: Who Onboards the Next Generation of Consultants? Unpacking the Hidden Influence of Junior Peers
MSc in ManagementThis research investigates the overlooked-actors involved in the onboarding processes of
large management consulting firms, re-evaluating the assumed central role of Human
Resources (HR). It further emphasizes the optimal structure of onboarding processes for
junior consultants including influential external factors. Based on the qualitative research, the
study included 31 interviews with junior consultants, onboarding coordinators and HR
representatives across eight of Sweden's largest management consulting firms. The analysis
in this study is grounded in the theories of Communities of Practice and Socialization.
Findings reveal that HR’s role in onboarding is over emphasized within the onboarding
process with minimal participation, contradicting previous literature. Instead, learning and
integration occurs through social interaction within informal social interactions in organically
formed peer communities. Junior consultants have shown to be pivotal in supporting and
integrating new employees. These findings suggest a need for HR to more accurately
communicate its function in onboarding and to recognize the importance of peer-led
socialization. The study contributes to new insights in the onboarding process and
understanding effective onboarding practices and identifies key activities for a successful and
effective process and integration.
In this context, this study suggests that onboarding in consulting firms often complement HR
frameworks. This is done by informal social learning and peer support. Therefore it becomes
a more high-pressure immersion of both client-work, organizational practices as well as
emphasis on learning by doing. Scholars argue that learning and integration occurs in social
interactions within peer groups shown in communities of practice. Moreover, whilst existing
literature highlights the importance of HR’s central role, this research argues against this view
since it fails to capture the true nature and dynamic of onboarding processes
Surface electromyography for improving upper limb function after stroke - Development of new rehabilitation tools
Background: Upper limb impairment is a major consequence after stroke, significantly affecting independence and quality of life. Various rehabilitation technologies have been developed to improve upper limb function, including surface electromyography (sEMG).
Aim: This thesis explores the potential of sEMG-driven interventions to enhance upper limb function after stroke, employing qualitative and quantitative approaches.
Methods: Study I summarized the current evidence on sEMG-driven interventions for upper limb rehabilitation after stroke through a systematic review and meta-analysis, investigating the effects of different types of sEMG-based therapies. Study II introduced a novel intervention that combined myoelectric pattern recognition (MPR) , virtual reality (VR), and serious gaming. This intervention was evaluated using a single-case experimental design to assess its feasibility and preliminary effectiveness in improving upper limb function in individuals with chronic stroke. Study III employed a qualitative approach to explore the experiences and perceptions of participants involved in Study II. Lastly, Study IV used a co-design approach involving individuals with stroke, clinicians and rehabilitation experts to refine and assess the usability of a training tool that uses a smart textile sleeve sEMG biofeedback system designed for self-administered upper limb rehabilitation.
Results: In Study I, 24 studies (n = 808) were included. Twenty of these studies reported significant improvements in upper limb function following sEMG interventions; however, the meta-analysis revealed no significant differences in overall effect between sEMG and non-sEMG interventions (14 studies), nor among different types of sEMG interventions (7 studies). In Study II (n = 6), all participants showed improvement on motor function, with five exceeding the minimal clinically important difference. Additionally, four participants demonstrated improvements in activity capacity and grip strength, with three out of four kinematic assessments conducted showing clinically meaningful results. Study III revealed that participants valued the intervention, found it unique and meaningful, and reported increased awareness and use of their paretic arm in daily life activities. They noted that “many factors come into play to make it work,” including their own role, the training system, and support from therapists. Study IV (n = 19) found that individuals with stroke and clinicians considered the smart textile sEMG biofeedback tool easy to use and a promising solution for self-administered upper limb rehabilitation at home, while also providing valuable feedback for future improvements.
Conclusion: sEMG-driven interventions show promising results as complementary tools for improving upper limb function after stroke. While the overall effect compared to conventional therapies remains inconclusive, significant improvements were observed, particularly among individuals with severe impairments in the chronic phase. Participants across studies reported positive experiences with novel sEMG technologies that offer real-time visual feedback and recognized the potential of these tools to support focused arm training and self-administered rehabilitation at home. Furthermore, user-centered design and interdisciplinary collaboration added value to the development of these technologies and strengthened the findings. Further research is needed to assess the efficacy of sEMG-driven interventions in improving upper limb function after stroke and to explore their long-term outcomes. Efforts should focus on enhancing usability for home-based applications to support broader access to evidence-based rehabilitation for individuals living with the long-term consequences after stroke
How Does Party Leadership Manage Internal Dynamics When Intra-Party Disagreement Occurs? A case study on the Swedish Social Democrats during their shift towards a restrictive migration policy
After the 2015 migration crisis and the Swedish Social Democrats' subsequent shift towards
restrictive migration policies, the leadership faced critique within the party as members voiced
their concerns. However, after the 2017 Social Democratic congress, the critique was replaced
by the members' praise. Therefore, this study explores how the party’s leadership managed to
convince the members and navigate the internal arena. The aim is to identify what strategies
the leadership employed and how the strategies changed by the circumstances (context)
surrounding the congresses. To answer the questions, the thesis conducts a text analysis on the
party’s congress protocols in 2017, 2019 and 2021, identifies five leadership strategies and
categorises them in an analytical table. The thesis utilises the strategies as a theoretical
framework alongside party behaviour and agency perspectives to understand how
circumstances affect leadership. The results show that the leadership defused intra-party
disagreement using strategies such as compromise, co-option and a solidaric rhetoric. The
leadership also referred to external threats to convince members that policy changes were
necessary. The congress contexts did affect what strategies the leadership used, and it was often
due to external factors such as electoral threats and the migration crisis, but some internal
contexts also affected the leadership and demonstrate that leaderships adapt. The results
contribute to the subject of intra-party dynamics by opening the “black box” of political partie
