THE GOVERNMENTAL VIEW ON CONSERVATION MANAGEMENT VS USE OF INVASIVE SPECIES - How attitudes and risk perception compare to the impact of Magallana gigas aquaculture on the Swedish West Coast

    No full text
Political institutions are facing new challenges in marine governance with the spread of alien invasive species, which are one of the largest causes of biodiversity loss. One of the biggest issues in management is the lack of funding and methods for conservation projects. A preventative tool that is used in its place is the Precautionary Principle, which inhibits activities that could have an impact on the environment. But it also creates an exaggerated risk perception of invasive species, and in combination with outdated legislation prevents effective management. A case study was done on triploid Magallana Gigas on the Swedish West Coast where relative impact from the reproduction of the species in aquaculture was compared to the reproduction in the wild diploid populations. Coastal municipalities and County Administrative Boards were interviewed to evaluate their attitude and risk perception toward Magallana Gigas, and to evaluate if their management approach is in conflict with their sustainable development goals. The results showed that a triploid aquaculture would have a very small reproductive contribution of 0.000 to 0.021% to the wild diploid population, if placed in an area where the species is already established. It was also revealed that while opinions differed, the majority of the respondents were against the use of the species commercially, and were sceptical towards compensation to allow the activity, despite the impact being very low. The conclusion is that despite having a small impact, political institutions will likely not consider utilizing the species for management approaches to engage industry actors, due to the precautionary principle, and in turn limits conservation alternatives, as well as puts Sweden's aquaculture development at a disadvantage

    The Gardens of the Landless

    No full text
Degree project for Master of Science with a major in Conservation 2025-07-03, 60 HECThis study examines the gardens of the landless in Västergötland, Sweden around 1900. “Landless” refers to crofters, cottage-dwellers, and lodgers who lacked land ownership and held a subordinate social and economic position. Using primarily Karl Fredrik Andersson’s photographic archive, supplemented by questionnaires and gardening literature, the research explores the types of gardens, plant materials, and cultural practices of these marginalized groups. The study applies Laurajane Smith’s heritage theory to understand why such vernacular gardens historically have been overlooked in research. Findings show these small scale gardens were vital for subsistence, combining practical cultivation of kitchen crops, herbs, fruit trees, and a small selection of ornamentals. The gardens reflected both economic necessity and cultural identity. The study also highlights the challenges and potentials of using archival photographs for historical research and stresses the importance of multiple sources for a richer understanding. Ultimately, it suggests museums can play a key role in expanding garden history to include diverse social perspectives

    No full text
Aim: The aim of this systematic review is to investigate the effects of erythritol compared to saccharose on ad libitum energy intake (energy intake until pleasant satiety is achieved) in adults. Methods: Searches were conducted in the databases PubMed and Scopus for data collection. Data collection included four separate search blocks. The search terms used were free search terms on different formulations of erythritol, sugars, ad libitum energy intake and randomized controlled trials (RCT). Inclusion criteria were adults >18 years, supplementation with erythritol, sugars, total energy intake measured by study personnel, RCTs, and studies written in English. The template “Cochrane risk-of-bias tool for randomized crossover trials” was used to assess the articles, which was obtained from the Swedish National Board for Medical and Social Evaluation (SBU). Assessment of the strength of evidence for the articles was carried out individually by the authors according to the evidence grading template from the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF). Results: The searches resulted in 93 unique articles, of which 91 were excluded when reading the title and abstract. The two articles that were read in full text were included in this systematic review. Risk of bias was assessed as moderate for both articles. The results from the articles were not consistent as one study found the effect to be significant and the energy intake decreased, while the other found the effect to be non-significant, the energy intake was not affected. The strength of evidence for the articles was therefore limited - insufficient (insufficient evidence). Conclusion: The evidence for the effect of erythritol on ad libitum energy intake, compared with saccharose is limited - insufficient (insufficient evidence) as the results from the studies were heterogeneous. Therefore, no clear conclusions can be drawn regarding the effect of erythritol compared to sucrose on ad libitum energy intake.

Adorned of what remains: critical fashion practice informed by psychopolitical approach

    No full text
MFA DesignAdorned of what remains is a project that aims to comprehend why the fashion industry prioritizes commerciality and profit, despite the knowledge of its detrimental supply chains, and how to navigate with the making of fashion design within these parameters. The primary goal is to generate the necessary knowledge, by a critical approach through the lens of psychopolitics, to understand the emotional governance that the industry holds on consumers, where they are able to keep pushing for over-production and over-consumption; all for the benefit of finding the right answers to work with fashion design in a conscious manner. By dissecting this perspective, the project will explore the criticality and guide the project through the making of a collection of corsets, that serves as a purpose to push the boundaries of traditional norms and methods in fashion design; through symbolism of the current state of fashion, and by feminist theories. The used material of discarded fashion invites the project into the area of up-cycling and circularity. All whilst, metaphors and intersections will dwell into the desire to re-frame on how to work with the craft, and art form, that is fashion design

Scoping Literature Review: What Factors Influence the Adoption of HR Analytics in Western Settings? - An investigation of the environmental, technological, organizational, and individual context

    No full text
Purpose: This thesis investigates the factors that influence the adoption of Human Resource Analytics (HRA) in Western settings. Despite the growing strategic relevance of HRA, adoption remains challenging due to fragmented understanding and misalignment with existing structures, processes, and practices. The study aims to provide a consolidated view of the complex landscape shaping HRA adoption by integrating multiple contexts. Theory: The research is grounded in the Technology–Organization–Environment (TOE) framework and the Technology Acceptance Model 3 (TAM3). These complementary frameworks are applied to examine the technological, organizational, environmental, and individual contexts that collectively shape the adoption of HRA. Method: A scoping literature review was conducted, leading to the identification of 24 relevant and peer-reviewed articles. An inductive thematic analysis was employed to identify, refine, and organize 30 subthemes under 11 overarching themes, which were then allocated to the four influencing contexts defined by the theoretical models. Result: The findings reveal a broad set of factors across all four contexts. Key themes include regulatory context, data governance, leadership commitment, and user motivation, among others. The study underscores the importance of ethical considerations, cross-functional collaboration, and layered training strategies. By offering a structured synthesis, the thesis contributes to both academic theory and practical efforts to advance the responsible adoption of HRA in Western settings

Svenska som andraspråk - undervisning för hållbar utveckling

    No full text
This licentiate thesis explores how Swedish as a Second Language (SSL) can help achieve Sustainable Development Goal 4— “inclusive and equitable quality education for all”—within the UN 2030 Agenda. Building on UNESCO’s call for reflective, responsible citizens, the study highlights language development as essential for social inclusion and long-term sustainability. Focusing on the underexplored middle-school years (Grades 4–6), it comprises two empirical sub-studies and an integrative kappa. Substudy I, based on semi-structured interviews with seven certified teachers, uncovers considerable challenges in providing professional language support: adapting instruction while ensuring full classroom participation proves difficult and raises questions about promoting social sustainability. Substudy II analyses five SSL textbooks (2011–2022), finding a strong emphasis on written, form-focused skills rather than functional language use, and scarce opportunities for oral interaction or critical inquiry. The kappa synthesizes these findings through Biesta’s educational functions (qualification, socialization, subjectification) and Cummins’s Literacy Engagement Framework, revealing the persistent struggle to balance these functions without allowing qualification to dominate, while teachers’ adaptive strategies—such as differentiated instruction and linguistic support, student-centred pedagogy and the cultivation of trustbased relationships, and the strategic use of students’ linguistic and cultural resources alongside textbook content—demonstrate clear potential. The study concludes that Swedish as a Second Language instruction should be increasingly informed by learners’ social, cultural, and linguistic contexts, and highlights the need for more certified SSL teachers and revised instructional materials to enable the subject to realize its full potential and thus contribute to achieving the education goal in the 2030 Agenda

Insights from an urban planning case

    No full text
MFA Embedded DesignThis paper explores how ownership is formed in participatory design projects and argues that ownership is not an automatic outcome of participation, but the result of genuine inclusion, agency, and shared power. While participatory design often positions ownership as a desirable goal, little attention is given to how it is fostered or what it actually entails. Drawing from Arnstein’s Ladder of Participation (1969, 2019) and the psychological theory of ownership (Pierce et al., 2001, 2003; Renz & Posthuma, 2023), this article examines how these frameworks intersect to shape participant experience. The analysis is grounded in a participatory design case study in Gothenburg, Sweden where the aim was to understand how residents can be engaged and involved in municipal urban projects. By mapping moments of inclusion and exclusion, the study reveals that ownership emerges when participants feel meaningfully involved in decisions and see tangible outcomes from their engagement. This paper contributes to design research by offering a more nuanced understanding of ownership as an affective and ethical dimension of participatory processes. It challenges designers to move beyond symbolic inclusion and consider how to intentionally design for ownership, recognizing its potential benefits and risks in long-term, community-centred projects

    No full text
