    No full text
This study focuses on examining how Macedonian resistance to Bulgarian demands has been represented and changed in North Macedonia during its EU integration process. The study is conducted through a qualitative content analysis where political statements from previous and current prime ministers are analysed, more specifically during the period from 2020 until today. The qualitative content analysis is used to categorize different representations of resistance and to identify themes that appear in the political prime minister's statements. The three themes found based on the analysis are: resistance by protecting the national Macedonian identity and language, resistance through diplomacy and confrontation and resistance through constitutional revision. Using Foucault's theory of power as resistance I argue for how resistance can be presented through different discursive practices all of which establish different knowledge that legitimizes the prime minister's resistance to the Bulgarian demands. The results show that resistance was articulated diplomatically until 2024, whereas today it is represented in a confrontational manner. The results also show different resistance strategies when it comes to the theme of national identity and constitutional revision. Furthermore, the study shows that these various resistance strategies have affected the development of North Macedonia´s path to the EU, with more progress made before 2024 than today

For biomarker identification and the study of antimicrobial resistance

Infectious diseases caused by bacterial pathogens are common, and their impact can be measured in economic losses, but more importantly, in the loss of lives and the deterioration of quality of life, as they remain among the leading causes of death worldwide. To develop strategies that reduce their impact, understanding the molecular mechanisms of the pathogens is essential. Therefore, this research presents specific examples of how mass spectrometry-based proteomics is applied to study the molecular mechanisms of infectious diseases from the pathogen perspective. State-of-the-art mass spectrometers, which provide high-throughput, high sensitivity, and specificity, were used to identify species-specific proteins and peptides on the surfaces of two of the deadliest bacteria: Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae (Papers I and II). Combined with surface shaving, this targeted approach enabled the identification of virulence factors and surface proteins found in multiple strains of these species, indicating promising candidates in diagnostics. Antimicrobial resistance is undoubtedly one of the primary concerns in modern medicine. In Paper III, a resistant strain of Escherichia coli exhibits a complex interplay of factors that contribute to the development of the resistant phenotype. ABC transporters, two-component system proteins, and metabolic pathways, such as vitamin and cofactor metabolism, are affected, all of which are identified and quantified through a proteomics-based labeled quantification approach. The study's findings offer insights into the molecular components that can serve as biomarkers or targets for treating bacterial infections and identify processes that could be targeted to combat antimicrobial resistance

The rise and approach of agricultural land assessments in Swedish municipal planning

    No full text
In response to a growing concern about the loss of cultivable agricultural land and identified shortcomings in how municipalities manage such land, many municipalities have begun conducting agricultural land assessments. These assessments aim to provide a more systematic basis for including the values of agricultural land in planning. This thesis investigates how such assessments are motivated, developed, and integrated within Swedish municipal planning. Through a qualitative multiple-case study of six municipalities, the analysis is guided by a landscape-oriented arena perspective and theories of neoliberal planning, which together highlight how local planning practices are shaped by both local context and broader economic structures. The results show that agricultural land assessments have increased attention to agricultural land and contributed to more consistent internal routines. However, their design and application vary significantly and are shaped by a combination of legal uncertainty and municipal priorities. This reflects a broader policy-practice gap in Swedish spatial planning, where decentralized responsibility is not matched with clear guidance or institutional support. As a result, the assessments function less as instruments of protection and more as tools for procedural legitimacy. The study concludes that while agricultural land assessments enhance the visibility and consideration of agricultural land in municipal planning, their influence on land-use planning remains largely dependent on local interpretation and priorities

Homestay or Staying Home? A Qualitative Study on Women’s Participation in Homestay Tourism in Ban Luoc, Vietnam

    No full text
The nexus between women’s empowerment and tourism has gathered wide interest from both scholars and policy-makers. This study explores the factors and conditions shaping women’s decisions in regards to homestay tourism, aiming to gain a deeper understanding of the social structures that shape women’s opportunities to participate in Ban Luoc, Vietnam. Data was obtained through semi-structured interviews and participatory observation, and analyzed using thematic analysis. The study found that women’s decisions to participate in homestay tourism were shaped by a combination of internal factors, such as self-confidence, skills, and knowledge, and external conditions such as financial support, access to training, and family dynamics. Furthermore, gendered division of labor and marriage played a significant role shaping women’s opportunities to participate in homestay tourism. This study highlights how research on women’s empowerment must address both individual abilities as well as the broader societal context as findings reveal women’s opportunities and their ability to choose were often shaped by intersecting factors and conditions

Between prevention and repression The construction of preventive work in Swedish Social Policy discourse – a discourse analysis

    No full text
The following study examines how preventive work is constructed within contemporary Swedish social policy discourse, focusing on the underlying ideologies affecting the construction. The study explores how preventive measures are represented in relation to youth criminality and stricter sanctions through a discourse analysis of the three government policy documents: Ju förr desto bättre- vägar till en förebyggande socialtjänst (2018), Proposition-Säkerhetszoner(2023) and Särpta regler om ungdomsövervakning och starffreduktion för unga (2024). The analysis is guided by Bacchi’s What’s the problem represented to be? (WPR) approach and Laclau and Mouffe’s discourse analysis. The findings reveal significant variation in how preventive work is constructed depending on which document is explored. One of the documents frames preventive work within a Swedish welfare-based, social democratic perspective, emphasizing long-term and structural measures. While the two others associate prevention with repressive, controlling security measures with a punitive populistic and neoliberal focus. Additionally, preventive work is in the study identified as an empty signifier, making it a powerful political tool for legitimizing different policy agendas. The analysis furthermore highlights the increasing influence of punitive populism in Swedish penal and social policy, especially when it comes to responding to the described increase in youth criminality. The study concludes with the point that although preventive work is framed as a progressive concept and the answer to social problems such as youth criminality, there is a clear increase in the use of the term to justify repressive and control-oriented measures. This raises concern regarding the balance between social protection, individual rights and public security

    No full text

For some time, there has been a general thought that churches built in the Early Middle Ages in Scandinavia, around the 12th century, directly replaced cult buildings or cult sites from the Late Iron Age. There are archaeologists who have criticized this and were instead skeptical that churches at all were built on places where a pre-Christian cult building existed. Several examples from Scandinavia contradict this and show a continuity of place and cult from the Late Iron Age to the Early Middle Ages. The aim of this thesis is through a spatial analysis, study Late Iron Age archaeological sites in the landscape around thirteen churches located around lake Tåkern in the western part of Östergötland, to see if there is a place and cult continuity from the Late Iron Age to the Early Middle Ages at the selected locations. During this period, the change from Old Norse religion to Christianity took place. It can be seen as a time of change in multiple ways; it affected people who lived during it both mentally and physically. Applying the spatial analysis in perspective to the change of religion and discussing this based on temporality, historical use and reuse of heritage, can provide a deeper understanding of the development of the landscape and the placement of the first churches in western Östergötland

International Justice for Whom – Sovereignty at the Border of Global Accountability

    No full text
The global community entrusts the International Criminal Court with the critical task of ensuring justice for the four core crimes defined in the Rome Statute. However, its enforcement efforts often face resistance, particularly from non-state parties to the Statute, where external intervention is sometimes perceived as an infringement on state sovereignty. Through the theoretical lens of Third World Approaches to International Law, this thesis critically examines the question of who truly benefits from the concept of international justice. It explores the tension between state sovereignty and the enforcement of crimes against humanity, with a focus on Sudan and Libya, by analysing the challenges of applying international law in postcolonial contexts. Rather than framing the resistance to external intervention as an opposition to human rights enforcement, this thesis addresses the issue of sovereignty infringements. It challenges the notion that international law is universally applicable, arguing that it is deeply rooted in Western values and evolved from Western perspectives. In response, this thesis advocates for the development of regional mechanisms that balance state sovereignty with the need for accountability, aligning international law with the diverse realities of these nations

Nytta VS Frihet.
