    No full text
Through an analysis of old boats and craft reconstructions, this thesis explores historical boatbuilding traditions in the Stockholm archipelago and how craftsmanship skills were shaped and transmitted in the past. The thesis investigates how these and other craft traditions can be understood and reconstructed when no living tradition remains. The focus of the thesis is on the practical reconstruction process, where the interaction between boatbuilders, materials and functions in local waters is central, and on the historical context, where archival material provides insight into the lives of 19th-century boatbuilders. The öka boats in the Stockholm archipelago, a local variation of Nordic clinker boat traditions, were chosen as a case study. The öka boats are open, clinker-built vessels designed for both sailing and rowing, serving as versatile boats for fishing and transport from the outer skerries to sheltered waters. The thesis is based on diverse source material consisting of historical original boats and archival sources, which complement each other and are interpreted through reconstructions. These reconstructions contribute to an iterative reinterpretation that constantly develops understanding of the subject, in this case the boatbuilding tradition in the Stockholm archipelago. The theoretical framework is mainly hermeneutic, inspired by Hans-Georg Gadamer’s philosophy of interpretation and prejudice (1960). The affordance concept developed by James Gibson (1979) is used to analyse the relationship between the craftsman, materials, environment and tools. As a result of this research, the boatbuilding tradition is understood as a system of measurements and procedures but at the same time a system of flexibility – a set of rules of thumb rather than rigid standards. The variation in the shape and construction methods reflects both geographical differences within the archipelago and the practical conditions (affordances) that builders had access to. Certain misunderstandings about the construction of these boats are clarified; forgotten nomenclature is brought to life. This thesis shows that a particularly challenging area is reconstructing the abstract knowledge that the boatbuilder carries – the tacit knowledge of design and judgement that cannot easily be expressed in words or measurements. In summary, the thesis is an in-depth investigation of an older boatbuilding tradition of the Stockholm archipelago, where practical craft skills and historical research are combined to make visible and protect a multifaceted tradition. It highlights the complexity of cultural heritage, the need for new research methods and the importance of preserving non-living intangibles or traditions as part of a cultural heritage

    No full text

PROJECTIONS OF PERSON AND BODY IN A VIDEO GAME CONTEXT; An anthropological study of the relationship between virtual bodies, game environment and social landscape on a multiplayer video-game server

    No full text
This thesis is based on ethnographic fieldwork done on a multiplayer server in the video game Garry’s Mod. The multiplayer server centres around roleplay and building. The game takes place in a 3D-modeled city with apartments, roads and parks. Players can take on different roles, such as regular citizens, police and various criminal roles. The way players move within and interact with the game environment has been a main concern in the study. For example, body language and building-projects are investigated. The main argument is that the concept of the body can be redefined in different contexts. In this case the context is a virtual game environment, within which the player’s body is virtually represented as the in-game avatar. The concept of embodiment is used to investigate this. Players’ engagement with the virtual game environment is also explored. The social landscape on the server affects how players interact with the environment, particularly as they build bases to protect themselves from one another. Using movement theory, the thesis explores how the virtual body and game environment are experienced in relation to each other. Social interaction between players is investigated through the lens of playful virtual violence and transgressive humour. Methods used include interviews, which have been conducted over voice call and chat messages, as well as participant observation within the virtual 3D environment in the game. The paper is written in English

Investing with purpose: ESG and Gender in Swedish mutual funds

    No full text
This thesis investigates actively and passively managed Swedish mutual funds performance from the perspective of sustainability and gender diversity. Despite widespread research around the world, there are limited studies taking these factors into consideration in the Swedish fund market. Using panel regression across 2018-2023 fund-level data, the study examines the association of net asset value (NAV) with aggregated ESG scores and gender diversity in boards and executive positions at the portfolio company level. The findings reveal that gender diversity at the executive level in the funds holdings is positively associated with performance, whereas diversity at the board level in the funds holdings is negatively associated. ESG scores and active or passive management strategy have varying degrees of influence on performance outcomes as well. The management style of the funds show that Active funds can reverse the effect on NAV by gender diversity metrics on the asset level. The conclusions support the application of modern portfolio theory, institutional theory, and behavioral finance, with a focus on the influence of cultural expectations and investor behavior on fund performance. The thesis contributes to ongoing discussion of responsible investment practice through the use of the integration of sustainability, and diversity measures into fund analysis and offers insights for fund managers and investors in the Swedish market

Integrating Marine Indicators into Corporate Sustainability (ESG) Reporting Standards: An Empirical Study

    No full text
Corporate sustainability reporting has gained unparalleled momentum over the past two decades in both academia and industry. The Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) frameworks and standards are extensively employed as an effective tool for sustainability disclosure, relying on science-based metrics and indicators to quantify anthropogenic impacts to the biosphere, especially environmental impacts. However, most of the environmental indicators are terrestrial-oriented, with limited representation of the ocean. To better address the imbalance, practical and operative marine indicators are needed in addition to the terrestrial ones. This thesis reviews key frameworks and standards of selected sustainability standard-setters such as Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) and European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS), and compares their indicators to the targets outlined in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 14 (SDG14). The result uncovers the deficiencies in marine metrics and indicators, evaluates the gaps between the selected standard-setters and suggests the integration of potential marine indicators into future reporting methodologies. This will not only enhance the achievement of SDG14 targets but also raise the awareness and responsibility of marine-related stakeholders in conserving and sustainably using the oceans, seas and marine resources. The study contributes to the disclosure of marine sustainability data and emphasizes that integrating marine indicators into ESG frameworks is crucial for an inclusive and balanced assessment of the environmental pillar

Inflammation and immunomodulation related to materials and extracellular vesicles

    No full text
Cell-to-cell communication is a fundamental process at the implant–tissue interface. This communication is shaped by implant properties or by extracellular vesicles (EVs) that transfer regulatory cargo between cells. However, the influence of macrophage-derived EVs at the implant-tissue interface is not understood. This thesis investigated (1) the cellular and molecular changes by gas bubbles generated during magnesium implant degradation in a rat soft tissue model, (2) how macrophage-derived EVs modulate inflammation and immunity (i) in mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in vitro, and (ii) at the titanium implant–tissue interface in vivo. In the magnesium implant soft tissue model, bubbles altered cell morphology and mechanosensation, activated interferon regulatory factor-7 (IRF7)-mediated inflammation and cytoskeletal pathways as mapped by spatial transcriptomics, and induced distance-dependent transcriptional and protein changes relative to the implant interface. In vitro, the EV microRNA cargo from M1 versus M2 macrophages were involved in the activation of pathways such as toll-like receptor (TLR) signaling, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) signaling and macrophage classical activation signaling. MSCs exposed to macrophage EVs increased their expression of inflammatory mediators, such as interleukins (-6 and -1 beta). MSCs also efficiently internalized M1 EVs and exhibited a strong expression of IRF7 at the gene and protein levels, independently of lipopolysaccharide treatment. In the EV rat soft tissue model, the density and viability of cells at the titanium implant interface remained unchanged upon EV administration. However, M1 EVs promoted the infiltration of polymorphonuclear cells after 1 d, while both M1 and M2 EVs increased multinuclear giant cell formation after 21 d. Cells at the implant interface internalized M1 EVs more readily, with a higher expression of Irf7. By contrast, M2 EVs increased the expression of the fibrotic marker collagen 1a1 (Col1a1) and promoted a thicker peri-implant fibrous capsule formation compared with Ti and M1 EVs. Together, bubbles from magnesium implants orchestrate a complex local response, which modulates the peri-implant tissue healing. MSCs and the titanium implant-tissue interface exhibit macrophage phenotype-dependent immunomodulation: M1 EVs encourage a pro-inflammatory, yet transient state, whereas M2 EVs promote a less inflammatory but pro-fibrotic tissue response. The specific cargo of macrophage-derived EVs underpins these modulatory effects with opportunities for EV-based therapeutics at implant sites

In this dissertation, two worlds are being engaged – healthcare and the theatrical arts – to investigate how partner-creating processes are established in encounters between patients and professionals in healthcare settings aiming for a more person-centred care. Person‐centred care has, since long, been endorsed by patient organizations and professional bodies as one of a set of core competencies needed to effectively meet the complex challenges facing today's healthcare systems and controlled studies have shown that person-centred care can contribute to measurable changes and positive effects. Such a profound change of approach has, however, proven itself to be ‘easier said than done’, and there is a need for methods and approaches that can contribute to how a partnership between healthcare professionals and patients can be established and maintained. This dissertation builds on experiences from my theatrical practice as director and actor. Two methodological concepts are brought in from the theatre through the Stanislavskian concepts of the Magic If and Given Circumstances which actors and directors use during rehearsals to analyse a playscript. To examine the asymmetry in human interaction in healthcare contexts and what means can be effective in creating partnerships in such situations, three care encounters have been selected and transformed into theatre manuscripts. These scripts are explored with the help of actors who have taken the roles of healthcare professionals and patients in staged readings, and finally these actors are also interviewed alternately in the first and third person. The model developed in the thesis is inspired by the philosophical anthropology and critical hermeneutics of Paul Ricoeur and, as such, the work of interpreting a role in a theatrical context, characterised by the actor investigating and testing, in practice, a preliminary understanding of the theatrical situation by performing it, is “read” through the theoretical lens of Ricoeur’s theory of interpretation. Inspired by Kristensson Uggla’s concept laboratory of interpretation, I have chosen to regard the theatre’s rehearsal process and the healthcare encounter dialogues as interpretation labs where the patient-role is being co-created and re-interpreted (thus both discovered and invented) in the collaboration between patients and healthcare professionals during the healthcare encounter

Economic and Structural Drivers of Nature Restoration – A Study on Swedish Grasslands

    No full text
Grasslands are highlighted in the EU Nature Restoration Regulation, and the restoration of semi-natural grasslands, such as meadows and pastures, is considered policy-relevant for preserving biodiversity in the Swedish agricultural landscape. This study therefore examined various factors influencing the likelihood of Swedish farmers applying for restoration support for semi-natural grasslands using a probit model. In total, 16 attributes related to socioeconomic, geographic, and ecological factors were analyzed. The study covered 1,096 farmers, companies, and foundations located in the counties of Västra Götaland, Jönköping, and Östergötland. The restoration group consisted of 566 farmers who applied for restoration support during the period 2015–2024, while the non-restoration group included 530 farmers who had not applied. The non-restoration group was randomly selected from active farmers owning land classified as restorable. To provide a comprehensive picture of the probabilities, five probit models were constructed. The results yielded several significant findings; for example, younger farmers and female farmers were more likely to engage in restoration. The results for Swedish farmers were consistent with previous research on farmer characteristics in other countries. To ensure the continued preservation of semi-natural grasslands, information was identified as a key component, and the findings of this study contribute knowledge on how such information can be more effectively targeted

    No full text
