A Study on the Livelihood Sources and Welfare Levels of Small-Scale Fishing Households in Tapanuli Tengah Regency, Sumatera Utara

    Get PDF
Indonesia is known as an “undersea paradise” because of its extraordinary wealth of marine biodiversity and fishery resources. With this nickname, coastal communities should have a decent life. However, in reality, their welfare is not in line with the wealth of marine resources, especially for fishermen. The lives of fishermen are often colored by economic challenges, weather uncertainty, and environmental changes that impact their welfare. This study aims to identify sources of livelihood, identify levels of welfare, and identify livelihood strategies carried out by fishing households. Through a survey that we conducted on 35 small-scale fishing households on the West Coast of North Sumatra, we found that most of them were still classified as less prosperous. Although the livelihood analysis shows that their sources of income are quite diverse, the contribution of income outside of fishing has not been able to improve their level of welfare. The results of this study also show that fishermen are not a passive group of people. Realizing the uncertainty in their livelihoods, they try to take advantage of existing opportunities by implementing livelihood strategies. The livelihood strategies carried out by fishermen are classified into economic dimensions, ecological dimensions, and social dimensions

The Role of Merak Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) in the Implementation of Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS) in Sunda Strait

    Get PDF
Merak Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) is pivotal in Indonesia's critical maritime traffic network, particularly within the bustling Sunda Strait. This waterway holds immense strategic importance, serving as the primary link between Java and Su-matra Islands and intersecting with the vital Indonesian Archipelago Sea Lane. The Indonesian Government implemented a Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS) in July 2020 to enhance safety and navigation. Despite three years of TSS implementation, concerns persist regarding compliance and safety within the Sunda Strait. This research employs qualitative methods to address these concerns, chiefly in-depth interviews with VTS operators. The overarching objective is to gain profound insights into the intricacies of TSS implementation and the array of challenges it faces. The findings reveal several significant challenges. These include the lack of robust law enforcement and insufficient socialisation efforts regarding TSS regulations, concerns related to weather conditions impacting maritime operations, limitations in VHF radio modulation affecting communication, and issues surrounding vessel compliance with directives from VTS operators. In light of these challenges, future recommendations should prioritise strengthening law enforcement mechanisms, intensifying educational initiatives, improving communication technology, enhancing weather monitoring capabilities, and exploring ways to strengthen vessel compliance with VTS instructions.

Effectiveness of GPCA in Reducing Data Dimensions and its Application to Human Development Dimension Indicators Data

    Get PDF
Analysis of human development growth at the regency/city level is challenging because the data is high-dimensional, indicators are correlated, and the regencies/cities are correlated. In this study, we propose a Generalized Principal Component Analysis to analyze human development growth by reducing the dimensions of regency/city and indicator. Thus, human development growth at the regency/city level is analyzed using the GPCA results in Biplot to describe each regency/city and its indicators. This study aims to evaluate GPCA in reducing the dimensionality of data whose observations are correlated, and indicators are correlated through simulation and empirical study; to analyze the growth of human development at the regency/city level based on the results of GPCA-Biplot. This research shows that GPCA works well in reducing data dimensions from correlated observations and correlated variables. Based on the results of the GPCA-Biplot visualization, the growth of human development in the Nduga regency from 2019 to 2022 showed significant fluctuations. Although some indicators show progress, especially in 2021, significant challenges remain. In the same way, the growth of human development in each regency/city can be analyzed. Thus, government policy focuses on real problems in the field

The Utilization of Ethanol as Antisolvent to Enhance the Glucomannan Content of Tuber of Amorphophallus muelleri Blume

    Get PDF
Porang (Amorphophallus muelleri Blume) is widely found in Indonesia. The high Glucomannan (GM) content in Porang (Amorphophallus muelleri Blume) compared to other tubers becomes the main advantage of Porang. Glucomannan is a low-calorie fibre polysaccharide with a β-1,4 bond composed of D-glucose and D-mannose. However, its Calcium Oxalate (CaC2O4) content is an issue and should be minimized when consumed. The research focused on increasing the GM content of raw Porang tuber donated from PT ABS., Bogor. Initially, the rawmaterialwas roughly sliced and soaked in NaCl solution (10% or 15 %-w), washed with gently warm water (approx. 40 °C), and air dried to result in Crude Konjac Flour (CKF). Further purification of CKF will produce Konjac Glucomannan (KGM). The KGM has a higher content of glucomannan. Ethanol (EtOH) was used as an antisolvent in the purification step. The final product of KGM was analyzed regarding GM, calcium oxide, moisture, and ash content. A 15%-w of NaCl solution followed by warm water washing could reduce the 59% content of Calcium Oxalate. Meanwhile, further purification using 50% EtOH increased 627.85% GM content from their initial value in Porang tubers. Hence, the treatment combination of NaCl-warm water washing and EtOH purification maximally removes calcium oxide and increases the GM content in the KGM
