    Get PDF

Queer futurities: Artistic strategies for dynamization of archives

    Get PDF
"Gendernaut. Queering the future" is a project clearly influenced by queer theories, transfeminist activism and science fiction. It displays a reflection on the potential of various strategies related to accessibility, distribution, socialization and playful reinterpretation of feminist and queer archives. The creation of archives, software programming, audiovisual production, performing performances or developing games thus become artistic strategies for energizing archives, and have a clear desire to make archives that address the memory of people more accessible. feminisms and dissidents of gender and sexuality. Through transmedia and performative experiences, we conceive the archive as a living interactive space, free of heteropatriarchal codes, inhabited by multiple bodies and subjectivities that relate past, present and future to come

RNase H-sensitive multifunctional ASO-based constructs as promising tools for the treatment of multifactorial complex pathologies

    Get PDF
Combined therapies play a key role in the fight against complex pathologies, such as cancer and related drug-resistance issues. This is particularly relevant in targeted therapies where inhibition of the drug target can be overcome by cross-activating complementary pathways. Unfortunately, the drug combinations approved to date –mostly based on small molecules– face several problems such as toxicity effects, which limit their clinical use. To address these issues, we have designed a new class of RNase H-sensitive construct (3ASO) that can be disassembled intracellularly upon cell entry, leading to the simultaneous release of three different therapeutic oligonucleotides (ONs), tackling each of them the mRNA of a different protein. Here, we used Escherichia coli RNase H1 as a model to study an unprecedented mode of recognition and cleavage, that is mainly dictated by the topology of our RNA·DNA-based hybrid construct. As a model system for our technology we have created 3ASO constructs designed to specifically inhibit the expression of HER2, Akt and Hsp27 in HER2+ breast cancer cells. These trifunctional ON tools displayed very low toxicity and good levels of antiproliferative activity in HER2+ breast cancer cells. The present study will be of great potential in the fight against complex pathologies involving multiple mRNA targets, as the proposed cleavable designs will allow the efficient single-dose administration of different ON drugs simultaneously

    Get PDF

Intrasalt carbonates in the Estopanyà Salt Wall (South-Central Pyrenees): reservoir quality and implications for geothermal exploration in salt diapirs

    Get PDF
Stringers are disrupted rock bodies commonly enclosed within salt diapirs. Traditionally, they have been regarded as a risk factor in the energy exploitation of salt structures due to their heterogeneity and general sub-seismic scale, which hinder their detailed identification. Nevertheless, rock units in stringers may exhibit sufficient permeability and temperature to act as potential reservoirs, for instance, in geothermal energy. Despite this possibility, studies regarding the reservoir potential of intrasalt stringers remain scarce. The well-exposed Estopanyà Salt Wall in the South-Central Pyrenees contains abundant Muschelkalk carbonate stringers, providing an excellent opportunity to study the geological controls on their reservoir properties. Four lithofacies within two stratigraphic intervals were identified. Depositional lithofacies (DLF-1 and DLF-2) preserve original rock textures, whereas alteration lithofacies (ALF-1 and ALF-2) result from intense brecciation, cementation, and dolomitization-dedolomitization affecting the depositional facies. Thermophysical analyses of 30 samples reveal limited variation in mineral density (2.61–3.00 g cm−3), bulk density (1.92–2.95 g cm−3), and thermal conductivity (2.37–3.48 W m−1 K−1), with the latter being primary controlled by rock mineralogy. In contrast, connected porosity (0.33–29.20 %), permeability (−18–10−14 m2), P-wave velocity (3.7–6.4 km s−1 dry; 3.7–6.5 km s−1 saturated conditions), and specific heat capacity (640–804 J kg−1 K−1) show greater variability. Property cross-plots indicate that porosity percentage and distribution are the main factors controlling the observed thermophysical behavior, which is ultimately linked to rock texture. The area and scarce thickness of porous and permeable intervals (estimated at reservoir volumes of 0.14–4.6 km3), likely preclude the limited reservoir use of the studied stringers. However, petrographic evidence from them highlights interesting processes such as brecciation and dolomitization that may have enhanced the permeability and thermal conductivity in the past, while subsequent cementation and dedolomitization reduced reservoir quality. Accordingly, although current outcrop conditions show diminished reservoir potential, higher porosity-permeability values may be preserved in the subsurface.Overall, this study establishes a conceptual model for the geological controls, limitations, and potential of intrasalt carbonates as unconventional reservoirs, providing comprehensive petrological and thermophysical data that can guide their exploration for geothermal production in salt diapir settings

    Get PDF
After a brief, general reflection on the rich literature and the historiographic debates concerning the internationalist mobilization and the Spanish War, the article will briefly analyse four aspects. Firstly, it will take into consideration the Comintern’s interpretation of the Spanish situation before the Civil War and the reasons that led to a resolute effort towards the defence of the Spanish republic menaced by the golpe carried out in the Summer of 1936. That effort, a part of the Popular Fronts’ strategy, had some characteristics that spread decisively the image of a Communist movement committed to the defence of democracy. Secondly, the Comintern action during the war will be analysed. T he focus will be on the building of the International Brigades, especially the leadership and organizational structure developed in order to realise an original effort of international solidarity, and their military action at Jarama, Guadalajara, Brunete, Belchite, Teruel, Aragon, and Ebro, before their dissolution and the retreat of the foreign soldiers, which took place in November 1938. The article will also examine the Comintern political action and that of its leaders within republican political life, especially the conflict of Spring 1937. Lastly, the article will focus on the memory of the Comintern and International Brigades’ action, especially during the Cold War

On the elusive formalisation of the risky condition for hypothesis testing

    Get PDF
In this paper, we examine possible formalisations of the riskiness condition for hypothesis testing. First, we informally introduce derivability and riskiness as testing conditions together with the corresponding arguments for refutation and confirmation. Then, we distinguish two different senses of confirmation and focus our discussion on one of them with the aid of a historical example. In the remaining sections, we offer a brief overview of the main references to the risky condition in the literature and scrutinise different options for formally capturing riskiness; we show why none of them works. We conclude with some remarks about the relation between derivability and riskiness and claim that riskiness essentially involves a contextual, pragmatic component that eludes a complete formal reconstruction

Walnut-enriched diet increases the association of LDL from hypercholestero lemic men with human HepG2 cells

    Get PDF
In a randomized, cross-over feeding trial involving 10 men with polygenic hypercholesterolemia, a control, Mediterranean-type cholesterol-lowering diet, and a diet of similar composition in which walnuts replaced approximately 35% of energy from unsaturated fat, were given for 6 weeks each. Compared with the control diet, the walnut diet reduced serum total and LDL cholesterol by 4.2% (P = 0.176), and 6.0% (P = 0.087), respectively. No changes were observed in HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and apolipoprotein A-I levels or in the relative proportion of protein, triglycerides, phospholipids, and cholesteryl esters in LDL particles. The apolipoprotein B level declined in parallel with LDL cholesterol (6.0% reduction). Whole LDL, particularly the triglyceride fraction, was enriched in polyunsaturated fatty acids from walnuts (linoleic and alpha-linolenic acids). In comparison with LDL obtained during the control diet, LDL obtained during the walnut diet showed a 50% increase in association rates to the LDL receptor in human hepatoma HepG2 cells. LDL uptake by HepG2 cells was correlated with alpha-linolenic acid content of the triglyceride plus cholesteryl ester fractions of LDL particles (r(2) = 0.42, P < 0.05). Changes in the quantity and quality of LDL lipid fatty acids after a walnut-enriched diet facilitate receptor-mediated LDL clearance and may contribute to the cholesterol-lowering effect of walnut consumption

    Grup de filosofia analítica

    Get PDF

Teachers joint planning as a field of learning and professional development

    Get PDF
