No full textThis chapter introduces the topic of detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) via nanomaterial-based sensors for health applications. Sensors are fast and relatively inexpensive tools for noninvasive diagnostics of health status by the detection of VOCs excreted from human breath or different body fluids and tissues, and they can be used to determine the volatilomic print of an individual. Utilization of the knowledge on different chemical families toward tuning sensor approaches is demonstrated. The chapter introduces the approach of semiselective/cross-reactive sensors for VOC detection and its advantages compared to selective sensor approaches. Different sensor technologies are reviewed, and it is shown that they are capable of easy adaptation in the field. As sensor systems provide high-dimensional outputs when applied to volatilomic analysis, predictive models for diagnosis are an integral part of the analysis. The chapter reviews current developments and future advancements of nanomaterial-based sensors and assesses the hidden difficulties in developing machine learning models for volatilome applications, offering recommended best practices for model validation and assessment

contribute to the identification of the violence LGBTI+ youth experience in these
spaces. The present chapter studies a group of young cis women of nonnormative sexuality, from an intracategorical complexity approach, to
investigate their experiences in their family homes in Manresa, a medium-sized
city in Catalonia. The reporting of these women brings to light the discrimination
and inequality they experience due to their condition as non-heterosexual young
women. Additionally, it portrays the strategies they develop in order to face these
situations. The results show that the family home is based on heteronormative
standards and that young non-heterosexual women use resilience strategies
within it. This chapter shows the discrimination and inequality that lesbians,
bisexuals and diverse sexuality women undergo and resist throughout their youth
at home

Reciprocal Negative Cross-Talk between Liver X Receptors (LXRs) and STAT1: Effects on IFN-gamma-Induced Inflammatory Responses and LXR-Dependent Gene Expression
No full textLiver X receptors (LXRs) exert key functions in lipid homeostasis and in control of inflammation. In this study we have explored the impact of LXR activation on the macrophage response to the endogenous inflammatory cytokine IFN-γ. Transcriptional profiling studies demonstrate that ∼38% of the IFN-γ–induced transcriptional response is repressed by LXR activation in macrophages. LXRs also mediated inhibitory effects on selected IFN-γ–induced genes in primary microglia and in a model of IFN-γ–induced neuroinflammation in vivo. LXR activation resulted in reduced STAT1 recruitment to the promoters tested in this study without affecting STAT1 phosphorylation. A closer look into the mechanism revealed that SUMOylation of LXRs, but not the presence of nuclear receptor corepressor 1, was required for repression of the NO synthase 2 promoter. We have also analyzed whether IFN-γ signaling exerts reciprocal effects on LXR targets. Treatment with IFN-γ inhibited, in a STAT1-dependent manner, the LXR-dependent upregulation of selective targets, including ATP-binding cassette A1 (ABCA1) and sterol response element binding protein 1c. Downregulation of ABCA1 expression correlated with decreased cholesterol efflux to apolipoprotein A1 in macrophages stimulated with IFN-γ. The inhibitory effects of IFN-γ on LXR signaling did not involve reduced binding of LXR/retinoid X receptor heterodimers to target gene promoters. However, overexpression of the coactivator CREB-binding protein/p300 reduced the inhibitory actions of IFN-γ on the Abca1 promoter, suggesting that competition for CREB-binding protein may contribute to STAT1-dependent downregulation of LXR targets. The results from this study suggest an important level of bidirectional negative cross-talk between IFN-γ/STAT1 and LXRs with implications both in the control of IFN-γ–mediated immune responses and in the regulation of lipid metabolism

Estos no solo obedecen a la Guerra Civil y al franquismo o el exilio republicano. Hay que buscarlos también en la mirada androcéntrica y misógina de gran parte de las élites culturales españolas durante el Modernismo y la Vanguardia, pues consolidaron un determinado canon que ha dejado al margen de la historia a estas escritoras (y también traductoras). Partiendo de estas reflexiones, nos adentraremos en una propuesta critica orientada a redescubrir a estas autoras, y a combatir el sesgo de género que ha consolidado una determinada imagen de ellas, o las ha condenado al olvido

El estudio parte del periodismo de opinión de Pla durante 1924 y 1925 sobre las causas de la instauración de la dictadura de Primo de Rivera y el cambio de régimen en Cataluña. Tras la revisión histórica sobre los procesos de formación identitaria entre España y Cataluña a finales del XIX y a lo largo del XX, Pla denuncia la autonomía económica del nacionalismo estatal e intenta encaminar un catalanismo que recupere la autonomía política
