Distribution network reconfiguration considering DGs using a hybrid CS-GWO algorithm for power loss minimization and voltage profile enhancement

    Get PDF
This paper presents an implementation of the hybrid Cuckoo search and Grey wolf (CS-GWO) optimization algorithm for solving the problem of distribution network reconfiguration (DNR) and optimal location and sizing of distributed generations (DGs) simultaneously in radial distribution systems (RDSs). This algorithm is being used significantly to minimize the system power loss, voltage deviation at load buses and improve the voltage profile. When solving the high-dimensional datasets optimization problem using the GWO algorithm, it simply falls into an optimum local region. To enhance and strengthen the GWO algorithm searchability, CS algorithm is integrated to update the best three candidate solutions. This hybrid CS-GWO algorithm has a more substantial search capability to simultaneously find optimal candidate solutions for problem. Furthermore, to validate the effectiveness and performances of the proposed hybrid CS-GWO algorithm is being tested and evaluated for standard IEEE 33-bus and 69-bus RDSs by considering different scenarios

Determining the Number of Batik Motif Object based on Hierarchical Symmetry Detection Approach

    Get PDF
In certain conditions, symmetry can be used to describe objects in the batik motif efficiently. Symmetry can be defined based on three linear transformations of dimension n in Euclidian space in the form of translation and rotation. This concept is useful for detecting objects and recognising batik motifs. In this study, we conducted a study of the symmetry effect to determine the number of batik motif objects in an image using symmetry algorithm through a hierarchical approach. The process focuses on determining the intersection line of the batik motif object. Furthermore, by utilising intersection line information for bilateral and rotational symmetry, the number of objects carried out recursively is determined. The results obtained are numbers of batik motif objects through symmetry detection. This information will be used as a reference for batik motif detection. Based on the experimental results, there are some errors caused by the axis of the symmetry line that is not appropriate due to the characteristics of batik motifs. The problem is solved by adding several rules to detect symmetry line and to determine the number of objects. The additional rules increase the average accuracy of the number of object detection from 66.21% to 86.19% (19.99% increase)

Facial expressions are critical indicators of human emotions where recognizing facial expressions has captured the attention of many academics, and recognition of expressions in natural situations remains a challenge due to differences in head position, occlusion, and illumination. Several studies have focused on recognizing emotions from frontal images only, while in this paper wild images from the FER2013 dataset have been used to make a more generalizing model with the existence of its challenges, it is among the most difficult datasets that only got 65.5 % accuracy human-level. This paper proposed a model for recognizing facial expressions using pre-trained deep convolutional neural networks and the technique of transfer learning. this hybrid model used a combination of two pre-trained deep convolutional neural networks, training the model in multiple cases for more efficiency to categorize the facial expressions into seven classes. The results show that the best accuracy of the suggested models is 74.39%  for the hybrid model, and 73.33% for Fine-tuned the single EfficientNetB0 model, while the highest accuracy for previous methods was 73.28%. Thus, the hybrid and single models outperform other state of art classification methods without using any additional, the hybrid and single models ranked in the first and second position among these methods. Also, The hybrid model has even outperformed the second-highest in accuracy method which used extra data. The incorrectly labeled images in the dataset unfairly reduce accuracy but our best model recognized their actual classes correctly

Network current quality enhancement under nonlinear and unbalanced load conditions using a four-wire inverter-based active shunt filter

    Get PDF
The flow of a large current in the neutral conductor of a transmission system is one of the major problems caused by harmonic pollution. This current can assume excessive values and even exceed the current flowing in the phases which can be extremely dangerous both for the equipment and the safety of the personnel. Currently, the parallel or shunt active filter (SAF) or parallel active filter is considered as the most effective solution to mitigate harmonic pollution and restore a sinusoidal current waveform in electrical distribution networks. The SAF can be used to compensate for harmonic currents, as well as that of the reactive power. This paper proposes a SAF circuit based on a four-arm inverter topology. The designed SAF is shown to lead to better harmonic compensation with a reduced THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) level in the presence of nonlinear and unbalanced loads in the network. The other goal of this study is to eliminate the neutral current caused by the unbalance in the polluting loads connected to the distribution network, achieve a near-sinusoidal current waveform and protect the electric network equipment

Design and Simulation of Modular Multilevel Converter Fed Induction Motor Drive

    Get PDF
Traditional modular multilevel converter (MMC) applications in medium voltage induction motor drive are difficult, particularly at low speeds because of the higher magnitude of the voltage ripple of the sub-module capacitor. This paper uses a hybrid MMC, particularly at low frequencies, to achieve a lower peak-to-peak voltage ripple of the sub-module capacitor. The vector control strategy with the closed-loop speed control indicates an accurate and wide-speed range. MATLAB / Simulink is used to simulate and obtain the simulation results of hybrid and traditional MMC with induction motor drive and compare from the standpoint of capacitor voltage ripple. The results are shown the reduction of peak-to-peak voltage ripple of the sub-module capacitor as the hybrid MMC is operated

    Get PDF
This paper aims to implement a wireless Wi-Fi network (Indoor and Outdoor) in order to cover the environment of the Oxford Institute (to learn languages and computer skills) in the best methods and lowest cost in order to provide Wi-Fi service for faculty members and all members of the administrative board and students. The realistic three-floor indoor and outdoor environments of the Institute were designed with Wireless InSite Package (WIP). In addition, emphasis was focus on the use of two types of transmitting devices (Directional and Omni-Directional). The aim of using these two devices is to determine which device is better to cover the Institute's environment well. In this work, a different frequency bands scenario was used to determine which band is suitable for coverage and stability of the wireless network. These bands are S-Band (2.4GHz), C-Band (5GHz), C-Band (10GHz), Ku-Band (15GHz), Ka-Band (28GHz), and MmWave (39GHz). Moreover, the focus has been on the most important basic parameters to determine the performance level of the two devices (Directional and Omni-Directional) as well as to determine the performance level of the wireless network. The most important of these parameters are Path Losses (LPath), Path Gain (GPath), Received Signal Strength (RSS), Strongest Received Power, Coverage Ratio (CR), and Received Signal Quality Ratio (RSQR). According to the results that emerged, it was observed that Omni-Directional antennas are much better than Directional antennas, especially in NLOS (None-Line-of-Sight) regions. It was also noted that CR, LPath, and RSS at S-Band (2.4GHz) are much better than the rest of the bands, so that the CR and the RSQR at this band reach 83.2184% and 95.7383%, respectively. While at the MmWave-Band (39GHz), it reaches 31.0345% and 70.7937% respectively

    Get PDF
The insulation condition of overhead lines is one of the main factors affecting reliability of overhead power transmission lines. It is known that the process of insulation lapping or rupture is mainly affected by environmental conditions and the degree of pollution of the insulators surface. This paper substantiates the possibility of using the leakage current values of insulators for monitoring the state of insulation and predicting its resource. The results of experimental studies of leakage currents of high-voltage insulators depending on their service life are given, on the basis of which forecasting the possible resource of insulators is carried out. The results obtained can be used to develop more effective diagnostics for detecting insulator failures at an early stage to take appropriate measures to coordinate the insulation

Design of a Lightning Protection System for an Overhead 3 kV DC Electrified Railway Line: A Case Study from South Africa

    Get PDF
A protection scheme is proposed for the 3 kV DC railway, in Kwa-Zulu Natal province, a region with a high lightning occurrence density. The surge protection was sought by implementing three metal-oxide surge arresters and an overhead ground wire. The purpose of these arresters is determined by their location in the circuit and the points that are vulnerable to adverse lightning effects: an arrester is installed to protect insulators between overhead lines and the supporting metallic mast, an arrester is installed to protect the point of contact between a stationary power supply wire and the train, and an arrester is installed to protect apparatus associated with the running tracks (return rail). An isolated earthing system is explored, and the effects of surge impedances and footing resistances are discussed. The voltage dropped across relevant vulnerable components and energy absorbed by the system components are determined by the simulation software Simulink. These results are compared with a railway system outfitted with the designed lightning protection mechanisms. Lightning currents are injected into the system using Heidler function where the parameters are in compliance with lightning protection standards. It is observed that the protection mechanisms defend susceptible components to a specified level. This demonstrates the success of the design in accordance with arrester protection levels (73.3 kV) and equipment withstand capabilities (a basic insulation level of 143 kV). This offers a protection margin of 95%. The largest percentage overshoot in the system is 39%, and this value is substantiated using reflection phenomena

Responsive Motion Control for Robot Soccer Navigation Using Adaptive Social Force Framework

    Get PDF
This paper presents a modified Social Force Model (SFM) for navigation control of a soccer robot application. We modified the way of determining the parameter value of the gain factor, , of the SFM using the Fuzzy Inference System (FIS), so that the value of the gain factor, , is adaptive. The purpose of the gain factor adaptation is that the robot can move responsively but not over-reactive when it encounters an obstacle at high speed, which is a weakness of SFM with fixed parameters. Modification of SFM parameters using FIS is hereinafter referred to as the Fuzzy-based Social Force Model (F-SFM). We used this technique on a soccer robot with an omnidirectional drive platform with three motors. As an experiment, several modifications to the FIS rules were made and compared to the SFM with fixed parameters. The simulation-based experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms the SFM method with fixed-parameters, and the computation time does not differ significantly so that it can be applied for real implementation
